Retired NBA star Kobe Bryant died on Sunday alongside his daughter Gianna Bryant and seven other people who were on board his private helicopter.

According to TMZ, they were on their way to the Mamba Academy for a basketball practice when the crash occurred.

Bryant is survived by Vanessa Bryant, with whom they had four daughters – Natalia Diamante Bryant, Bianka Bella Bryant, Gianna Marie-Onore Bryant and Capri Kobe Bryant, who is just 17 weeks old.

To mark their 20th anniversary on November 28, 2019, Bryant posted a touching message on Instagram in which he referred to his wife as “queen”.

“On this day 20 years ago I met my best friend, my Queen @vanessabryant I decided to take her on a date to Disneyland tonight to celebrate old school style (pre 4princesses) I love you my Mamacita per sempre,” his message read.

The couple met when Vanessa was 17 years old and working as a background model on the set of a music video. Bryant was 21 then and still a senior at high school.

Their relationship sparked a media frenzy at the time. According to the Los Angeles Times, a TV helicopter once flew over Vanessa’s campus to try and catch a glimpse at her and Bryant together.

Within a year of meeting, Bryant popped the question to his beautiful girlfriend. Six months later, the pair walked down the aisle as bride and groom in a low key wedding in April 2001.

However, in December 2011 Vanessa filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences”.

Vanessa was expected to get half of Kobe’s $150 million fortune but in 2013, the couple announced that they had called off their divorce.

It’s after that they had their third daughter Bianka, while their last-born daughter arrived in June of 2019.

Bring it on! ODM MCA dares Moses Kuria to do his worst

Nairobi County Assembly Minority Chief Whip Peter Imwatok has escalated his war of words with Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, daring him to “bring it on”.

This comes hot on the heels of the duo’s public confrontation during the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) rally held in Mombasa over the weekend.

DISRESPECTFUL

The Makongeni MCA said he will not be intimidated, saying that he will still serve Mr Kuria the same humiliation he received in Mombasa if he does not learn to respect President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and learn to behave with decorum in future BBI meetings.

This is even as he alleged that he has received threats over the phone after their public exchange with the Jubilee legislator.

“Sending people to call and intimidate me on the phone will not scare me. I do not fear and since he has come to our level, we will deal with him at our level,” said Mr Imwatok.

Mr Kuria had said his woes started when he refused to stand up when Odinga arrived at Mama Ngina Waterfront podium. It is there then that Mr Imwatok accosted him taking away his BBI hat and even his seat at the venue.

He went on to allege that his action resulted in him being barred from addressing the meeting.

Mr Imwatok, nevertheless, justified his actions saying that the MP was disrespectful to Mr Odinga.

BBI MEETINGS

“Mr Kuria kept on hurling insults at our party leader in his vernacular language prompting me to intervene. Where I was born in Makongeni, if a small boy pockets while the elders are passing, his age mates will remove his hands from his pockets forcefully,” said the Minority Whip.

“As the sons of Raila and President Kenyatta, we will not sit back and allow Mr Kuria and other members of Tanga tanga such as Boni Khalwale and Oscar Sudi to disrespect and humiliate everyone across the country, especially senior politicians such as the president and the former premier,” he added.

The ODM ward representative warned Mr Kuria and other Tanga tanga lawmakers to observe peace and decorum when attending BBI meetings failure to which they should stay away from the rallies or instead organize their own.

“The Tanga tanga team came to the BBI meeting to spoil peace in the country. We will not stand and watch them abuse the President and former premier. If you can’t respect them then kindly organize your own BBI meetings and you will not see us there,” he said.

At the same time, Mr Imwatok called on security agencies to move with speed to rein on the wayward behaviour of Mr Kuria before “he sows more seeds of discord in the country”.

“Gatundu residents should do the necessary in 2022 by showing him the door as he is bringing a disgrace to the constituency that gave us the President. He should not pretend in any way that he can match the like of the president and Mr Odinga,” the MCA said.

Al Nisa Children’s Home in Karen has sent an appeal to the public to help them reunite three children with their relatives.

According to the home, the three children, Starlin Ibrahim, 12, Arafat Abdullahi, 5, and Zamzam Abdulahi, 2, were referred there by the Children’s Officer at Kenyatta National Hospital in October of last year.

Despite all the efforts put to clampdown on fraudsters stealing from members of the public with a promise that they will help them join the military, more than 100 youth were still fell into the trap during the last recruitment exercise in 2019.

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Spokesperson Col Paul Njuguna on Monday said that more than 100 youth were handed fake calling letters by conmen and that they were not gazetted.

Subsequently, all the affected youths who presented the fake letters were arrested.

He further revealed that those arrested turned up at the Eldoret Moi Barracks Recruit Training School. They will be arraigned in court after investigations are concluded.

“Any other recruitment that took place in any other place rather than the recruiting centers was a con job. Unfortunately, some Kenyans were still being conned,” Col Njuguna said.

FORGED LETTERS

“The suspects gave out Sh300,000 to secure the calling letters. We have involved the DCI, National Intelligence Service and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to ensure due recruitment process was followed,” Col Njuguna addeds.

Once arraigned, they will be charged with forgery and being in possession of a forged calling letter.

According to Col Njuguna, Kenyans never took serious calls by the government not to engage in shoddy deals during the recruitment exercise.

“Before the start of the recruitment exercise last year, we warned the public against unscrupulous individuals going around the country saying they are agents of KDF. It is said that many young people fell into the trap and paid millions only to be arrested when they report to training,” said the KDF officer.

SDA Church thanks Atheists in Kenya for helping suspended students

The Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) has appreciated the support it received from the Atheists in Kenya that saw 17 students associated with the church who had been suspended on religious grounds allowed back to school.

In a letter seen by Nairobi News, Mr Arap Too an SDA church elder recognized the efforts made by AIK President Harrison Mumia in ensuring that the students are allowed back to school.

“Our pastor, elders and the entire leadership of the Seventh Day Adventist Church at Syokimau Airport view wish to most sincerely thank you for showing solidarity with our members who are learners at Kabianga High School in Kericho County,” Too said in the letter.

According to the letter, the 17 students, who were suspended after they refused to take examinations on Sabbath Day, had already been accepted back to the school.

AIK, through Mr Mumia, had written to the school asking the principal to respect the student’s right to worship and allow them back to school or he would sue the school.

“Religious freedoms must be protected. The cultural majority should be prevented from denying others freedom of worship and belief,” he said.

Days later, the students were accepted back to school. The 17 boys had been kicked out of school with their belongings for going to church instead of sitting for a Continuous Assessment Test (CAT) on a Saturday.

Drama as stubborn suspect declines to follow magistrate’s instructions

Makadara Law Courts Senior Resident Magistrate Merissa Opondo on Friday had difficult time when a suspect arraigned before her on charges of intending to commit a felony declined to follow her instructions.

The suspect, Stephen Ngugi, was charged alongside his accomplice Robert Swatsi. Both suspects were allegedly found in possession of knives along Tom Mboya Street.

CHARGES

They are also facing drug peddling charges after they were reportedly found with four rolls of bhang each when they were arrested on January 23, 2020.

However, rather than responding to charges, Ngugi resorted to making claims that police officers from Kamukunji Police Station had robbed him.

Opondo told him that the law requires an accused person to plead to the charges – by either denying or pleading guilty before lodging complaints before the court.

But Ngugi was adamant that she should first help him recover his cash and the said items he claims were stolen from him by the officers.

DEMANDS

Ordinarily, an accused person should answer to the charges before making other demands from the court, if they are not seeking deferral of the plea charges.

Ngugi insisted that Opondo must first listen to his claims before he pleads to the charges.

“I am going to record that you have denied the charges,” Opondo said after Ngugi declined to respond.

The two were arrested after members of public informed police officers on patrol that they were smoking weed in public, selling the same and intimidating pedestrians to buy dummy phones from them.

Swatsi denied the charges and was released on Sh 30,000 while Ngugi was freed on a cash bail of Sh 50,000.

Police in Nairobi have recovered electronic devices – including 86 mobile phones – valued at Sh 6.5 million, which are suspected to have been stolen from members of public by pickpockets and muggers in CBD.

Nairobi Central Police commander Mark Wanjala said the items were recovered on Sunday in a stall in Pwani Guest House along Gaberone road in downtown in a sting operation where one suspect was arrested.

INVESTIGATIONS

The devices include 35 iphones and 17 iPads as well as photography and videography equipment, including 18 cameras and camcorders.

Wanjala said the raid by police and DCI officers from Kamukunji Police Station followed investigations that led police into the building where the phones are sold after being stolen.

He said the phones and other electronic items are sold to the traders mainly phone technicians by street children and muggers after they rob members of public.

The stolen devices are then dismantled to alter identification features that that can be used to trace them, or are vandalised and critical parts sold.

“Cases of stolen phones in CBD has decreased since we started arresting those buying them. We decide not to arrest the chokoras and instead go for those buying the stolen phones from them,” Wanjala said.

Wanjala said the mobile phones will be taken to DCI headquarters for forensic investigations to identify the owners.

STOLEN

“The forensics will use the International Mobile Equipment Identification (IMEI) numbers get the first mobile phone numbers used on the gadgets and that way identify the owners,” Wanjala said.

Some 154 phones, two laptops and an iPads were recovered from technicians in phone repair shops in downtown Nairobi by officers from Kamukunji Police.

The technicians found with mobile phone numbers they can’t account for have been charged with handling suspected stolen property while others are facing charges of robbery with violence after police traced owners who reported to have lost phones in robberies.

Police boss Daudi Loronyokwe said the two have also recorded statements at Kajiado Central police station as investigations continue.

Two suspects, a man and a woman, were on Monday charged with allegedly stealing a loaded firearm from Deputy President William Ruto’s residence in Mombasa.

Elsia Wakesho Kazungu and Joshua Owiti Oliech are accused of stealing a Ceska pistol loaded with 15 bullets from Francis Kariuki, who is attached to the Central Police Station.

STOLEN PROPERTY

Prosecutors allege that the suspects stole the firearm, the bullets and a mobile phone worth Sh1,200 from the complainant at DP Ruto’s residence in Mvita sub-county on December 12 last year.

They say the suspects committed the offence jointly with others who are still at large.

Mr Oliech was further charged with handling stolen property. He is charged that on January 14, in the course of stealing, he dishonestly received a mobile phone knowing it was stolen. He is being accused of committing this offence on January 14 in Kisauni sub-county.

On December 18 last year, Mr Kariuki was allegedly taking a stroll in the Housing Finance area of Moi Avenue in Mombasa at round 1am when he met a woman who introduced herself as a Ms Stella.

MISSING PISTOL

After a brief chat, investigators say, the two hired a tuk tuk that took them to the officers’ quarters at DP Ruto’s residence, where the officer was staying.

“Ms Stella allegedly requested to take a shower first,” the police investigations says.

While the woman was taking a shower, Mr Kariuki is said to have placed his gun under the pillow.

“It was after that when Mr Kariuki woke up, he found out that his gun and mobile phone were missing,” the investigators said.

State Counsel Erick Masila, however, told the court that the truth about the incident will be explained to the court when the matter comes up for a hearing.

The prosecutor told the court that the gun and the bullets are yet to be recovered. The two suspects were released on a Sh200,000 bond.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) members have passed a new electoral code and board in a Special General Meeting (SGM) held earlier on Tuesday at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi ahead of the elections scheduled to be held in March.

The new board comprises Communication Consultant Kentice Tikoko, Patrick Onyango, who has previously worked for Fifa, sports journalist Ali Hassan Kauleni, former Fifa referee Alfred Ndinya and Samwel Karanja who is also a Communication Consultant.

Others are Kenya Table Tennis Association chairman Andrew Mudibo, Rachel Muthoga and Elaine Mbugua.

The initial electoral board chaired by Prof Edwin Wamukoya and Elynah Shiveka was disbanded after the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) nullified the polls last month.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa has revealed the new board will accompany him, officials from the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT), Sports Registrar and officials from the Ministry of Sport to Zurich on Wednesday to meet Fifa for an ‘open’ discussion on the upcoming elections.

GOR, LEOPARDS ABSTAIN

“We want to share with Fifa our plans and also to get their view and opinions on the same. We spent around Sh 15 million in the aborted elections last time and we are going to spend roughly the same amount in the upcoming elections so we have to be very careful,” Mwendwa said.

Kenya Football Coaches Association (KEFOCA), Kenya Football Referees Association (KEFORA) and Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KEFWA) once again missed the FKF SGM as they are yet to hold their own elections.

The three bodies also missed the aborted FKF elections held late last year.

Kenyan giants Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards did not vote for or against the new electoral code and board as they chose to abstain from voting.

In a quite unusual bail ruling, Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi directed that the Sh10 million be paid in four installments of Sh2.5 million for the next four months.

As part of the bail terms set, the Magistrate further said the cash bail will be used towards the victim’s medication with the amount that remains unused serving as bail.

Last week, President Uhuru Kenyatta challenged the Judiciary to deliver convictions in graft cases to prove that the country is headed in the right direction in the war against the vice.

The president said that no administration in the history of the country has prosecuted cases the way he has done.

A week before, the president said he will not side with evildoers and criticized the Judiciary for failing to convict drug peddlers and those facing corruption charges.

Court directs Transport Ministry to construct public toilets along highways

A judge has directed the government to provide toilets and other sanitation facilities along highways.

In a ruling, Justice Kossy Bor directed the Transport Cabinet Secretary to constitute and chair a team that will include representatives from the council of governors (COG), Kenya National Highways Authority (KenHA), Kenya Rural Roads Authority and Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura).

The judge said the working group should formulate the policy for the provision of sanitation facilities to give effect to the right to a clean and healthy environment along the highways.

Lawyer Adrian Kamotho had asked for the toilets to be provided within 60 days but in the decision, Justice Bor said taking into account the budgetary implications of formulating and implementing the policy, it was impracticable to have functional public toilets within the said period throughout the road network in Kenya.

DECENT TOILETS

“The national transport policy should incorporate toilets and other sanitation on road stops on the national and international trunk roads. The policy should take into account the need to have toilets and other sanitation facilities maintained properly by the county governments once constructed,” she said.

The judge added that the policy should take into account the overall objective of guaranteeing every person using the road network reasonable access to decent toilets and sanitation facilities.

In the case, Mr Kamotho wanted counties through CoG and KenHA to set up and operate hygienic sanitary facilities, saying Article 42 of the Constitution entitles every citizen to a clean and healthy environment and reasonable standards of sanitation.

Western Stima coach Salim Babu has picked his second Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Coach of the Month Award this season after beating Tusker tactician Robert Matano for the December gong.

Both coaches won three games and drew once in the month of December 2019, but Babu’s goal haul propped him above Matano.

Stima scored 10 goals and conceded four goals playing against Nzoia Sugar, Zoo, Chemelil Sugar and Sofapaka while Tusker scored half what Stima managed while conceding just two.

Babu pocketed Sh 75000 courtesy of Fidelity Insurance to become the third tactician to win more than two of the monthly gongs since its inception five years ago.

“I’m glad this is happening again this season and I want to thank my family and teams for enabling me to win this award. December was very competitive and I must say we really did our best to win the games that we played,” Babu said during the award presentation at Moi Stadium, Kisumu.

However, Babu expressed his frustration that Stima is not in the top five clubs in the KPL standings. He said he will not celebrate his monthly awards if his side remains rooted in mid-table.

BEST POSITION

“We are trying hard to make the entire team develop and compete for the league trophy. We had good pre-season training and started the season really well but results have not been as consistent,” he said.

Babu won the first award of the 2019/2020 season and hopes the December the performance will give Stima a shot in the arm to finish the season with a flourish.

“We will take our chances in the remaining games and finish in the best position possible. We still have a good team and just need to keep our focus for the remaining games,” he said.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa has revealed he held a meeting with all Kenyan Premier League (KPL) clubs this week to discuss the future of the league.

KPL’s mandate to run the league comes to an end mid this year and the federation is keen on taking charge.

To that effect, Mwendwa has revealed that have a raft of proposals which will be presented to its members during the next Annual General Meeting (AGM) in October.

“Our contract with KPL is coming to an end soon and I recently had a candid conversation with the clubs. We have agreed on how we want the KPL to be run from next season and we have many other proposals that we shall share and seek consent from the members to implement in the next AGM,” Mwendwa said during FKF’s Special General Meeting at Safari Park on Tuesday

“We want KPL to have an independent chairperson appointed by the National Executive Committee and seconded by members in our next election. He will have two assistants from the KPL clubs also voted by members. The KPL must operate from the federation’s office at goal project. They will be independent but will run under the guidance of FKF,” he added

The current KPL management led by CEO Jack Oguda has had a rough in recent times, following the exit of gaming company SportPesa who were the league’s title sponsor.

KPL recently moved from an expansive office based at the Brookside Drive in Westlands to a smaller space along Lenana road in clear cost-cutting measures.

Mwendwa however says FKF has a number of proposals ready – including securing sponsorship for the league – to steer the sinking ship that is KPL.

Gospel artiste Peter Blessing has been released on a Sh500,000 bond or an alternative cash bail of Sh200,000 after being sued by Kevin Kioko aka Bahati on grounds of obtaining Sh2,039,000 through false pretense while at EMB Records.

Milimani Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku lifted a warrant of arrest on the artiste – real name Peter Mwanyalo – which had been issued on January 23, 2020.

CHARGES

According to the charge sheet, Mwanyalo is accused of obtaining money by false pretense that between July 4, 2019 and January 5, 2020 at EMB Records in Nairobi.

He allegedly obtained Sh2,039,000 from Kioko by falsely pretending that he was able to produce music videos, with the said EMB records.

Mwanyalo pleaded not guilty to the charges and his lawyer Festus Mbati stated that they received summon to appear in court on January 22 and not January 23.

The artiste was released after paying the cash bail.

His case will be mentioned on February 11, 2020 for a pre-trial direction and fixing of hearing dates.

Last week, word broke that the 20-year-old had quit Bahati’s label after he shared a video on social media asking fans to support him in his new journey.

FALLOUT

Mwanyalo, who hails from Taita Taveta, released his first song Nasubiri Bado under Bahati’s record label after Bahati pulled him out of a security job.

On Thursday Mwanyalo and EMB producer Paulo were allegedly arrested and the singer spent the night at Central Police Station following a case filled by Bahati.

Paulo spoke after his release saying that Bahati had accused him of stealing from the studio and yet he gave him the said items.

Mwanyalo said he spent the night at the police station over fake allegations.

“Can’t imagine nilikuwa cell but God I know this are signs of my success, Mungu halali mengi mazuri yananisubiri… Its only God who replies to the deeds the poor are going through. Fake allegations got consequences. God’s favour,” he wrote on Instagram.

It is alleged that the whole back and forth started after Bahati got wind of Blessing’s intended exit his record label.

Bahati is yet to respond to these claims.
