A Kenyan woman has come out to claim that men who get home early are ‘professional cheaters’.

In her tweet, Tabitha Kanyungu said men who arrive home from work by 6pm carrying household items and help with house chores, children’s homework and putting babies to bed are cheaters.

Kanyungu claimed that such men usually engage in sexual escapades with their girlfriends during the day, especially during the lunch breaks, and only go home early to conceal their action.

She however warned the culprits that their days are numbered.

Her claims divided opinion on social media. While some agreed with her, others said that her claims will be a topic of discussion during the next ‘men’s conference’.

Others were of the view that women are also guilty of doing the same.

A 23-year-old casual labourer is facing defilement charges after ‘marrying’ a 17-year-old girl who fled her parent’s home twice to be with him.

Daniel Musau Mwei is also facing an alternative charge of committing an indecent act with a minor.

He is accused of committing the offence in an estate in Nairobi between October 2019 and January 2020.

Mwei allegedly started an affair with the class 8 pupil in 2018 and in October 2019 she fled her home to be with Mwei.

The girl was later traced to Mwei’s house and when the mother called the accused, he confirmed that the girl was in his house.

The mother reported the matter to the police. The girl returned home early this month and her mother sent her to her rural home in Kakamega.

However, the she later confided to her aunt that she was pregnant. The aunt told her to return to Nairobi to live with the man responsible for her pregnancy, which she did.

The matter was reported to police and Mwei was arrested.

He denied the charges before Makadara Law Courts Chief Magistrate Heston Nyaga. His bond terms will be set by the trial court.

A man was allegedly found half naked inside Embakasi West education offices has pleaded his innocence in court, claiming he was arrested after he was found answering a short call near the said premises.

Michael Odhiambo Okoth was arraigned before the Makadara Law Courts on charges of breaking into a building on January 22, 2020 with the intention of committing a felony.

The accused denied the charges before Senior Resident Magistrate Merissa Opondo, claiming his only offence was answering a call of nature at the wrong place.

Security guards at a nearby dispensary heard a commotion inside the offices and went to check only to find a blue trouser and a mobile phone on a table.

They informed police officers on patrol who went in and found Okoth hiding. After he was arrested he confirmed that the trouser and phone were his.

The accused had not stolen anything from the premises, therefore the police decided to only charge him with breaking into the premises.

But the accused blamed the police officers of violating his constitutional rights by holding him in custody for more than 24 hours.

The accused was released on a cash bail of Sh 20,000. Hearing of the case will be fixed by trial court on January 27, 2020 after officers who arrested him respond to his claims.

James who, until then had been trailing Kobe on the list, came good and scored 29 points in the LA Lakers’ 108-91 defeat to Philadelphia 76ers early on Sunday to move to 33,655 career points, making him third-highest scorer in NBA’s history.

James’ current tally is 12 more than what Kobe (33,643) managed in his playing career.

On Sunday evening TMZ and ABC 7 reported that Bryant was one of the five people who died in a helicopter crash.

It has since been confirmed that Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant, was among those killed.

Nine people were killed in the helicopter crash that claimed the life of NBA star Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Los Angeles officials confirmed on Sunday.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said eight passengers and the pilot of the aircraft died in the accident.

“There were no survivors… There were nine people on board the aircraft, the pilot plus eight individuals,” Villanueva said.

The helicopter crashed in foggy weather in the Los Angeles suburb of Calabasas. Authorities said firefighters received a call at 9:47 am about the crash, which caused a brush fire on a hillside.

The Los Angeles Police Department air support division grounded its helicopters until the fog lifted in the afternoon due to the weather conditions.
“The weather situation did not meet our minimum standards for flying,” said police spokesman Josh Rubenstein.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby said firefighters had to hike to the site with medical equipment and hose lines to extinguish the blaze.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti confirmed that Bryant’s daughter Gianna was among the victims.

“L.A. is grieving with the Bryant family over the loss of Gianna, who perished with her father and friends in today’s tragedy,” Garcetti wrote on Twitter.

Gianna was one of Bryant’s four children with his wife Vanessa.

The retired NBA star, 41, and Gianna were flying to a game his daughter was expected to play in when their helicopter crashed, according to US reports.

Local media said the other victims included another player and a parent.

Orange Coast College confirmed that its baseball coach, John Altobelli, 56, was also on board the helicopter.

CNN said Altobelli’s wife, Keri, and one of their two daughters, Alyssa, were aboard the chopper as well.

Villaneuva told reporters the authorities would not identify the victims pending notification of family members and identification from the coroner’s office.

“It would be extremely disrespectful to understand your loved one has perished and you learn about it from TMZ,” Villanueva said, referring to the celebrity news website that first broke the news about the crash.

“That is just wholly inappropriate, so we are not going to be going there. We are going to wait until the coroner does their job.”

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was dispatching an 18-person team to California to help with the investigation into the crash.

“Our team will be looking at the history of the pilot and whatever crew was on board,” said Jennifer Homendy, a member of the NTSB.

“We will be looking at maintenance records of the helicopter. We will be looking at records of the owner and operator of the helicopter and a number of other things.”

She added that the helicopter was a Sikorsky S-76B that has a black box which investigators will seek to recover.

According to data from flightradar24.com, a flight tracking site, the chopper took off from John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana at 9:06 am.

It headed northwest, reportedly to Mamba Sports Academy in Newbury Park, about 85 miles (137 kilometers) away.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino will remain in custody until Monday afternoon when the Millimani Law Courts Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi will make the discussion on his bail application.

Babu has been at Industrial Area Remand Prison since January 20, 2020 after Andayi declined a request to have the legislator detained at the Gigiri Police Station.

ATTEMPTED MURDER

The first-term MP was first detained at Kilimani Police Station but was later moved to Gigiri police station on January 18,2020.

Last week on Monday, the Babu – real name Paul Ongili – denied an attempted murder charge at the Milimani Law Courts, after he allegedly shot Felix Orinda aka DJ Evolve at B Club in Kilimani, Nairobi.

The offence commonly referred to as accessory after the fact to murder attracts life imprisonment.

“Any person who becomes an accessory after the fact to murder is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for life,” Section 222 of the Penal Code reads.

Babu also denied a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner while carrying a firearm, by firing at Mr Orinda violating Sections 33 and 31 (1) of the Firearms Act.

IMPRISONMENT

The Act (Section 33) prescribes imprisonment for a term not exceeding a year, a fine not exceeding Sh10,000 or both for any person found guilty of carrying a firearm while drunk or disorderly.

Section 34 (1) further prescribed a sentence not less than seven years but not exceeding fifteen years for, the possession and use of a firearm with, “intent to commit any criminal offence.”

CCTV footage from the club showed Babu, shooting the DJ, while smoking shisha, and surrounded by his friends – including a woman who was seated next to him.

The DJ is still admitted at Nairobi Hospital having undergone surgeries to remove a bullet that was lodged in his neck.

The project has allowed motorists to navigate through Westlands and Parklands area all the way to get to Redhill from Waiyaki Way and vice versa with ease.

The family of Felix Orinda popularly known as DJ Evolve has opposed the release of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino on bail.

DJ Evolve was seriously injured when he was allegedly shot by the MP – real name Paul Ongili – on January 17, 2020, at B-club in Kilimani.

SECURITY CONCERN

In a bail assessment report presented in court on Monday, the DJ’s family cited the security of their kin as their major concern.

The family fears that due to the MP may use his political influence to undermine justice for their kin.

“Their plea to the court is that if the same is granted, other protective measures should be instituted to ensure the security of the victim, family and also to safeguard against witness interference,” the assessment report reads in part.

The DJ has been at the Intensive Care Unit at Nairobi Hospital after sustaining neck injury from the shooting incident.

ATTEMPTED MURDER

Last week Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi called for the victim’s evidence to be presented in court before he would decide whether to release the MP on bail.

The prosecution team also told the court that the victim voiced concerns over his security.

“I have not slept for days because I am scared of my life and future,” DJ Evolve said, according to the bail assessment report.

Owino is charged with attempted murder and behaving disorderly while carrying a firearm at B Club where he shot DJ Evolve on January 17.

The rise and rise of sponsor culture in Kenyan campuses and colleges

One in five female university students are engaged in sexual relationships with older men (colloquially known as “sponsors”) in exchange for money and other favours, a recent study by the Busara Centre for Behavioural Economics reveals.

The study conducted among 252 participants aged between 18 to 24 years from universities in Nairobi, and a further 238 participants using random digit dialling, revealed that young women expect money in exchange for sex even from their boyfriends or casual acquaintances.

SEX FOR CASH

Young women interviewed revealed that Sh5,000 a month was the bare minimum expected of a sponsor.

“Thirteen per cent of participants reported expecting money in exchange for sex, be it from a boyfriend or casual acquaintance. And regular support of $50 (Sh5,000) a month was associated as strongly with boyfriends as with sponsors, indicating that “price” (that is the level of support provided) may be a stronger indication of sponsorship than the presence of financial support in itself,” the study reveals.

The difference between boyfriends and sponsors from the study mostly lies in the value of financial support than in monetary support per se.

While dates, gifts, outings, and meals were expected from boyfriends, girls look up to sponsors for rent, trips, and financing of their beauty expenses.

The study involved a 45-minute questionnaire that included demographic information, psychometric measures and questions covering perceptions, attitudes, perceived prevalence and norms surrounding different sponsor-relationship structures.

The researchers also created fictitious social media profiles and gave participants tasks to complete.

They measured how much time was spent looking at different sections of the profiles and found out that participants spent significantly more time looking at income when evaluating a potential sponsor, and significantly more time looking at his profile picture when evaluating potential boyfriends.

POTENTIAL SPONSORS

“Income was very predictive of how high men scored as potential sponsors and as his income increases, so does his potential for being a sponsor. The desirability as a boyfriend barely changes with income however. Owning a car made sponsors more appealing, but made no difference when evaluating the men as boyfriends.

“Being married made a man less attractive as a boyfriend, but did not make a difference for potential sponsors,” the report reveals.

Overall, respondents felt negative about their stories of sponsorship, whether they related experiences of friends and peers, or about themselves.

When asked what emotions they associated with their stories, 55 per cent of women selected “upset”, followed by “ashamed” (36 per cent) and “irritable” (35 per cent).

Some stories even included tales of violence, abuse and threats to women’s health and safety.

For some women, sponsorship provided a chance to make money in way that’s fun and works well alongside their student life.

For others, sponsorship is a chance to access a more luxurious lifestyle, including travel to places they wouldn’t otherwise get to visit. For them, the story of sponsorship is one of fun, excitement and opportunity.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a notorious gang operating on motorbikes terrorizing residents of Kileleshwa and Kilimani.

According to a post on Twitter, the DCI mounted an operation against the purported criminals and managed to arrest four of them.

THE SUSPECTS

“Following reports of increased cases of criminals operating on boda bodas within Kilimani and Kileleshwa, DCI detectives based at Kilimani mounted an intelligence-led operation where four suspects were arrested,” the DCI said.

The four suspects have been identified as Abdul Jafar, Derick Simani, Sadiq Mohamed and Hassan Musa Chepkoech.

During the arrest the sleuths also managed to recover one pistol, motorcycles registration number KMFA 500Z, KMET 389K and two motorcycles with no registration numbers.

Incidents of crimes committed by motorbike riders have been on the rise in Nairobi in the recent past.

SECURITY RISK

In 2019 National Crime Research Centre presented a report in Parliament saying boda boda gangs pose security risk and if not controlled can get out of hand.

The report, from a survey conducted in at least 24 counties, warned that the transport sub-sector poses a major threat to the national security, noting that armed robberies in M-Pesa shops, shopping malls and in the estates are now carried out by gangs on motorbikes.

The state agency recommended mandatory registration of the riders, refresher training, testing, regulation and effective oversight of the industry to contain it from further infiltration.

Police sources have told Nairobi News that the video was taken in Mombasa and already a manhunt has been launched for the culprits.

In the footage captured on Saturday, January 25, 2020, at 7:15 pm, one of the robbers walks into the shop and starts chatting with the attendant.

As the two are talking, his accomplice walks in carrying a long gun that is covered with a piece of cloth.

Sarah Cohen the main suspect in the murder of businessman Tob Cohen on Monday afternoon visited her palatial home in Kitusuru to pick her personal items.

Mrs Cohen was accompanied by her lawyer Philip Murgor and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

CRIME SCENE

She was given the go-ahead to visit the home and pick her belongings as the home remains a crime scene.

“We expect her to pick her items from the home but the court should also ensure that no-one is given access to the home,” Mr Murgor said.

Last week Judge Daniel Ogembo denied Mrs Cohen access to the home where she said she wanted to pick food, alcohol, her car, her daughter’s belongings, two dogs, electronics, files from her office and paintings.

There was a push and pull with Murgor keen on doing a video recording but DCI detectives objected.

ACCESS GRANTED

They eventually agreed after the family legal team including lawyer Cliff Ombeta were denied access to the house.

“But we have entered into an agreement and decided that they will record a video, write an inventory on the same.” Murgor said.

The family also requested Mrs Cohen to be followed through the rooms by two female officers.

Mrs Cohen, who was accused of murdering her husband, has denied the charges in court.

A migratory bird which flew a distance of 6,948 kilometers from Europe before landing in Kenya has died.

The bird, known as Osprey, died over the weekend while under the care of Kenya Wild Life veterinarians and a KWS-licensed Raptor Rehabilitation Centre in Karen, Nairobi.

CAUSE OF DEATH

“We regret to announce the death of the rescued migratory Osprey bird despite all efforts to rehabilitate and eventually release it into the wild,” KWS said in a statement.

KWS added that a postmortem examination report conducted by veterinary teams attributed the death to long term starvation which precipitated system organs failure.

The raptor bird was spotted in West Imbo Location, Usalu Village, Bondo Sub County in Siaya County last week by an area resident who reported to the KWS team in Siaya, on January 20, 2020.

BIRD’S ORIGIN

The bird was caught in a fishing net and appeared to have struggled to release itself. It also has bruises on the legs but appears healthy despite losing some weight and being dehydrated.

The bird was delivered to the KWS Veterinary Department on Thursday. The initial plan was to have it stabilized by administering IV fluids, provided with a proper diet then monitored for a few days before being released back to the wild.

The bird’s origin was established from a refereeing ring on its leg which indicated it was ringed in Finland.

Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), also called sea hawk, river hawk, and fish hawk is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey with a cosmopolitan range. It is a large raptor, reaching more than 60 cm (24 in) in length and 180 cm (71 in) across the wings.

A man in his mid-20s is staring at a life imprisonment after he was found guilty of defiling his neighbour’s 12-year-old daughter by the Makadara Law Courts.

Kelvin Okelo Ouma was convicted of defiling the minor on October 28, 2016 after luring her into his house in Mathare, Nairobi.

Ouma called the minor into his house, collected and hid her slippers immediately she enter the house before he undressed and defiled her.

In his defence, Ouma, who is shopkeeper, claimed the he had been framed by the victim’s mother because of a unpaid debt for items borrowed from his shop.

He further claimed that five people – the victim’s parents and three others – stormed his shop and started beating him up before they took him to police station.

Ouma also claimed that police demanded a bribe of Sh 50,000 to free him but he did not have the cash.

But all his claims were overruled by the court.

SENTENCING DATE

“This evidence was not corroborated. In the least, the accused should have availed the credit book from the shop or any other document to prove that he was owed. Since the shop was his, this document was easily available,” Senior Resident Magistrate Jackline Kibosia ruled.

“The accused further claimed he was badly injured by five people. From the record, the accused took plea on November 7, 2016 and the plea court was not informed of this fact as alleged by the accused,” the magistrate further ruled.

In mitigation, Ouma pleaded for leniency saying that he has a young family and his wife had only delivered a few months before his arrest.

He also said that being the first-born in his family, he was responsible for his younger siblings.

The accused said he was remorseful for his actions, stating that he has learnt a lot while in remand and was going to be a law-abiding member of public if pardoned.

Ouma will be sentenced on February 6, 2020 after the probation department tables his social inquiry report.
