Blogger Nyakundi released on Sh300K cash bail

Controversial blogger Cyprian Nyakundi and his co-accused Emmanuel Ongera were on Friday released on a cash bail of Sh 300,000 each.

The two were charged over an Sh17.5 million extortion attempt, charges they denied.

The two were accused of attempting to extort Sh17.5 million from Victoria Commercial Bank CEO, Yogesh Pattni so they can pull down libelous articles from Mr Nyakundi’s blog.

The suspects were arrested at Westgate Mall in Nairobi on Tuesday by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The court was told that the Sh 1 million was down payment for Sh 17.5 million the two had demanded from Pattni to pull down a series of libellous articles posted on Nyakundi’s blog on diverse dates between Tuesday, September 10, 2019, and Wednesday, January 15.

The magistrate heard that Mr Pattni obtained orders blocking Mr Nyakundi from publishing the defamatory articles.

It was said that Mr Nyakundi, however, ignored the order and continued posting the articles.

Although the prosecution did not oppose the release of the two on bond, the complainant through lawyer Kamau Chege cited the incident where he disobeyed the court orders and went ahead to publish the article.

“The accused is notorious for disobeying court orders. Your honour, whenever we try to serve him it is difficult. Nyakundi is hard to get hold of hence he should be denied bail. We served him with the court order electronically,” Chege argued.

Defense lawyers Cliff Ombeta and Dunstan Omari urged the court to overrule the complaint and release the accused.

The case will be mentioned on February 7.

Tangatanga team allied to Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday made true on their promise and showed up at the BBI rally in Mombasa.

The event, which was to be held at Tononoka grounds, was moved to Mama Ngina Waterfront where security was heightened.

Immediately they started making their way to the dais, the crowd attempted to block them.

There was a bit of push and pull with security officers trying to make way for the lawmakers.

Kipchumba Murkomen( Elegeyo Marakwet ) Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, Mohammed Ali (Nyali) and Moses Kuria (Gatundu South) all arrived and took their seats at the main dais.

STATE HOUSE AMBITIONS

Dr Ruto’s allies, who have been accused of being critical of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), changed their tune and promised to attend the BBI rally this week.

The team under the TangaTanga faction of the Jubilee Party has been claiming BBI was meant to shortchange the DP and scuttle his 2022 State House ambitions.

On Friday, a press conference called by four Coast Members of Parliament (MPs) allied to DP Ruto in a hotel in Mombasa town was disrupted by irate youths armed with stones and other crude weapons.

The four MPs led by Jumwa, Ali, Athman Shariff (Lamu East) and Kilifi women representative Gertrude Mbeyu were chased away by youths shortly after arriving at Lotus Hotel where they had planned to address the media.

Mr Murkomen, who is currently at Mama Ngina Waterfront, had vowed to attend even after he claimed that there was a plot to “humiliate” them.

According to Murkomen, the their opponents had hatched a plot to deny them seats at the rallies or heckle them if they attempted to address crowd.

The host governor Ali Hassan Joho had warned Ruto-allied leaders against interfering with the forum.

“Let them be made aware that they can joke anywhere else in the country but it shall not be in Mombasa,” he remarked.

Outrage after black Ugandan climate activist is cropped out of AP photo

A black Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate has slammed an international news agency for cropping her out of a photo with white young female activists at the 2020 World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.

The Associated Press agency, commonly known by its abbreviation AP, ran an article on Swedish Environmental activist Greta Thunberg’s reaction to criticism and mockery from the US Treasury chief, Steven Mnuchin at the World Economic Forum in Davis. Mnuchin had dismissed Thunberg’s suggestion that governments and companies should cut back dramatically on fossil fuels.

Nakate accused the media of racism after she was cropped out of the photograph taken with her white peers in Davos.

Ms Nakate said “various” outlets, including the US’ AP news agency, had removed her from photos.

A spokesperson for AP told BuzzFeed News, “There was no ill intent. AP routinely publishes photos as they come in and when we received additional images from the field, we updated the story.

AP has published a number of images of Vanessa Nakate.”

Ms Nakate gave a news conference in Davos on Friday alongside fellow climate activists Thunberg, Loukina Tille, Luisa Neubauer and Isabelle Axelsson.

She later shared an article by AP in which she was cropped out of a picture of the activists.

In an emotional video statement, Ms Nakate said that for the first time in her life she “understood the definition of the word racism”.

“I was cropped out of this photo. Why?” Nakate retweeted AP’s tweet with a comment.

This has raised an online uproar against the AP with people claiming that it was a racist move.

Some of Nakate’s supporters asked the AP to release a statement apologising for the move.

Nakate’s fellow activist Greta Thunberg comforted the Ugandan with an apology.

“I’m so sorry they did this to you… you are the last one who would deserve that,” Thunberg tweeted in response to Nakate’s tweet.

AP later issued a version of the same photo featuring Nakate standing next to the other activists.

Women rally behind Gladys Shollei after leaked photos

A section of women have come out in solidarity with Uasin Gishu County Woman Representative Gladys Boss Shollei after pictures of her and a white man in a loving eembrace went viral on social media.

Suba North Member of Parliament Millie Odhiambo led the pack calling Shollei her hero and saying that if she decides to move on to a new relationship it was right and lawful.

Also, she vowed to support her and any decision she makes as she starts her new life with or without a man.

“Yesterday my sister Gladys Jepkosgei Boss was on air to clarify a few things in regard to her matrimonial life. I wish to state that: They are not the first to divorce and will not be the last. In this age and time, one can easily move on after divorce and remarry at any time and any age. It is lawful. Sam Shollei moved on one day after divorce. The speed depends on their “behind- the -door” realities we are not privy to. Because of the public nature of Glady’s life, there will likely be attempts to paint her bad to spoil her chances going forward. Do not let that worry you a bit. You are a good leader. Uasin Gishu will make the final decision about your leadership going forward,” said Ms Odhiambo.

SMEAR CAMPAIGN

She added: “Should they not elect you, you are an excellent lawyer, you will rise like you have risen through the storm before. I know many women leaders who have had to withstand blackmail from spouses because of their positions. Do not be intimidated. I am happy you have said you will not be responding to the smear campaign against you but we will be on hand to defend. We may be on different paths politically and we will definitely be on each other’s case politically but socially and spiritually, you are my sister and my hero. All the best as you start a new life with or without a new man. It is your choice.”

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s first born daughter Saumu Mbuvi also congratulated the Woman Rep for her bold move.

Saumu posted on Instagram saying that it was important for women to choose happiness because “you owe no one a perfect relationship”.

“Happy when I see women getting over it all and choose happiness, your peace is all that you owe to yourself, you owe nobody a perfect relationship or explanation. Life is too short. Do you,” wrote Ms Mbuvi.

TONGUES WAGGING

Intimate photos of the former Judiciary’s chief registrar intimately hugging another man, set tongues wagging on social media.

A heated debate among netizens ensued especially since the photos come hot on the heels of an emotional letter she penned to her former husband Sam Shollei, following their highly publicised divorce.

Sam is reported to have re-married immediately after the divorce to his former employee Faith Ronoh from Chepkorio, Elgeyo Marakwe.

We could not ascertain the relationship between Gladys and the man in the photo as the legislator has refused to comment about the matter only saying that the photos of her and a white man are being used by someone close to her for political reasons.

The 20-year marriage between Gladys and Sam officially ended at Milimani Courts on January 8.

Chief Magistrate PN Gesora, who annulled the marriage on “the basis of cruelty” described the marriage as “irretrievably broken down.”

The divorce was reportedly filed by Sam last year on September 6.

He told the court that they had been living apart with Gladys for four years.

Buruburu Sub County Police Commander (SCPC) Adamson Bungei while confirming the arrest said Owiso, was arrested for inciting the public to violence on Thursday. She is being held at Makongeni police station where she will spend the weekend until Monday.

Owiso recorded herself on video ordering a police officer who had apprehended her over an alleged traffic offence to leave her car, saying it was unlawful for a traffic officer to enter a suspected wrong-doing motorist’s car.

“She has been arrested in connection with incitement to violence. On Thursday, she recorded herself on video asking a uniformed police officer to leave her car on grounds that no law enforcement officer is allowed to enter a motorist’s car to make an arrest, which is not true,” said Bungei.

They later met in Mombasa during the Wasafi Festival in 2018 where Mbosso was among the artistes performing at the event. During his performance, Mbosso called Jamal on stage to appreciate him.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has changed tune on the Building Bridges Initiative and called for a referendum.

The tangatanga senator, who is allied to Deputy President William Ruto, was speaking on Saturday during the Mombasa BBI rally held at Mama Ngina Waterfront.

He was invited to speak by Governor Hassan Joho, who put him on the spot, on whether he supports or rejects calls for a referendum.

He said: “It is no longer about us versus them, we are united. We’ve all agreed that a referendum is a must”.

RIVALRY

He said all politicians are in support of BBI and that political rivalry over issues should end.

“It’s the first time in history for politicians to sit on one dais and have a common stand,” Murkomen said.

In drumming up support for the referendum, the senator added that Central region leaders in attendance – Governor Anne Waiguru and MP Moses Kuria are also in support of the referendum.

Also, Murkomen referred to Raila as Baba, something that got him support from the crowd who cheered him on.

The team in December, led by Murkomen, Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot and Belgut MP Nelson Koech insisted the BBI report must go through Parliament instead of a referendum.

Witchcraft or magic? Mysterious fraudsters causing panic in Limuru

$

0

Residents of Limuru are a perplexed lot following the emergence of mysterious group of defrauders.

The conmen are one-of-a-kind and are using peculiar techniques which can rival top-of-the-chart crime blockbuster series.

CAUSE FOR ALARM

Fraud is not a new concept in the vibrant town in Kiambu county, which is only few kilometres from Kenya’s capital city.

But it is the puzzling incidents of residents who have been robbed – no, freely given out – their valuables to strangers in broad daylight, only to realize later when it is too late that is a cause for alarm.

It is little wonder then the normally welcoming, full of life residents, are now wary of greeting, let alone talking to strangers.

Nancy, a receptionist at a law firm, is incredulous when we visit her in her office.

She is still in denial that it actually happened to her!

These were things she has been reading on social media and brushed them off as mere chit chat.

“They were two men. It was in the afternoon and they wanted to deposit money and some legal documents including stamping. I calculated the cost which amounted to Sh30,000. They gave me the go ahead and paid in cash. I even counted the money a second time to ascertain it was the correct amount then put it in the cash drawer,” she recalls.

How she snapped out the stupefaction minutes later and realized she had actually received Sh40,000 old bank notes, remains a mystery.

But it was too late as the two strangers had already disappeared.

SCHOOL FEES MONEY

Kagendo, a house help, is at pains to narrate how she lost her entire savings of more than Sh20,000, including her phone, when she met the defrauders at Limuru market.

She had been sent by her employer to purchase groceries when she met the two women, who seemed to have sprouted from nowhere, as she tells us.

They requested her for directions to a certain building in the area. Since she was also new in the area, she could not help them, but not before she got a sudden urge to go for her money.

“I called a boda boda rider who took me back home where I collected all the savings I had kept for the six months I had been working there. I returned to the market and strangely met the two women again. The next thing I remember I was sitting under a bridge staring, blankly with nothing, not even my phone,” she narrates with tears welling up in her eyes.

For Jason, a second year student in a university in Nairobi, it was a normal day and he had it all figured out, or so he thought.

His plans for the day were going to school, paying school fees for the semester and preparing for his forthcoming end of semester exams.

All he remembers is encountering two women on his way to the stage who inquired for directions to a certain bank.

How he willing gave out Sh27,000 – money meant for his school fees – and his phone to the strangers is something he ‘will narrate in his old age’ as the locals say.

CASES OF FRAUD

Cases of fraud are not new in Limuru. The region has witnessed, time and again, fraudsters who use all methods including pregnant women, children, and people pretending to be serious ailing.

In June 2019, two young women were reported to be targeting motorists along the Limuru-Nairobi road by masquerading as sisters with one of them pretending to be epileptic while the other feigning to carry her while stopping vehicles for help.

In 2018, a trader lost more than Sh450,000 to a man masquerading as a priest from Benedictine Monastery, but who was in fact a con man targeting business operators in the area.

There have also been cases of young fraudsters pretending to be house girls who end up stealing valuables from their employers.

It is such incredibly bizarre cases which have left some people wondering what could actually be wrong with Limuru town.

Whatever it could be, it has been claimed that the cold and misty weather which the area is famed for, also offers a perfect hideout for the criminals.

A postmortem by Dr Dorothy Njeru of Kenyatta University Funeral Home established that Ng’ang’a died as a result of trauma inflicted on his head with a blunt object.

One of the boda boda riders interviewed by Kayole Directorate of Criminal Investigations detectives said Kimani, who had earlier employed him, had requested him to hire motorcycles from colleagues, photocopy their ignition keys and take to them, but the man declined and informed the other riders.

The intention is said to have been to have the bikes’ registration changed, then report it stolen for compensation from insurance firms.

The two suspects were arrested by boda boda riders in Githunguri area of Utawala and a commotion ensued before police officers from a nearby police post intervened and arrested and took him to Ruai Police Station.

The two denied the charges before Senior Resident Magistrate Merissa Opondo and were released on a surety bond of Sh 500,000. Hearing of their case starts on May 18, 2020.
