Tottenham Hotspurs midfielder Victor Wanyama has fulfilled his promise of sponsoring six needy students to complete their secondary school education through his foundation.

The six students, who were shortlisted after a vigorous process, reported to their respective schools this week and Wanyama has expressed his joy.

“I am very proud of the scholarship programme, above all I’m proud of the students we selected. Looking at their results, their background and the schools they attended, you can see great potential in them. I pledge to support then as I had stated earlier, to enable them to reach their potential. It is also important to motivate them to work hard in school,” Wanyama said.

HIGH SCHOOL

Sammy Oriko and Landgreen Makhoha were admitted to the prestigious Maranda School, Eva Moraa and Zawadi Tamara reported to Sironga Girls High School, Esther Achieng is at Asumbi Girls High School while Trizah Shem was enrolled in St Brigid’s High School.

The six students are on full scholarship until they clear high school.

The Victor Wanyama Foundation was formally registered last year and is the mid-fielder’s vehicle to giving back to the society. It will be based in a prime 20-acre piece of land in Busia, which will also house the Victor Wanyama Academy.

Wanyama also recently donated a 40-seater bus to his former club County Bus FC and the Muthurwa Boxing Club.

Kenya Meteorological Department has told Nairobians to brace for a week of heavy rains.

According to a statement from the department, the heavy rainfall will also be experienced in other parts of the country.

Heavy rainfall of more than 20mm is expected on Friday, January 24, in parts of Nairobi, South Western Kenya, and Central.

RAINFALL

“It is expected to intensify to more than 30mm in 24hrs from Saturday 25th to Monday 27th January over Nairobi, Coast, Southeast, Central, Western and parts of northeastern regions,” the statement reads in part.

The coverage and intensity are expected to lower over the South Eastern, North Eastern and the Coast from January 28.

However, on January 28 and 29, Western and Central Rift regions are expected to receive more than 40mm of rainfall.

The rainfall is expected to subside from January 30 in most parts of the country.

All the 47 counties are listed as areas of concern with Kenyans being told to be on the lookout for potential flash floods.

Residents have been advised to avoid driving through, or walking in, moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.

Should we be worried about the new Wuhan coronavirus?

$

The World Health Organisation has postponed its decision about whether to classify the new Wuhan coronavirus as a global health emergency. It wants to gather more information and met again at midday on Thursday in Geneva (late Thursday night, Australian time).

In the meantime, China has barred people from leaving Wuhan from 10am today, local time:

There’s so much we don’t know about the virus, which increases the level of concern from public health officials.

So what do we know so far?

Origins in Wuhan

We first heard about cases of pneumonia caused by a new virus in December from authorities in Wuhan, China – a city of 11 million people.

What started as a cluster of 27 people with pneumonia – with common symptoms including fever, dry cough, chest tightness and difficulty breathing – has spiralled to 582 confirmed cases, including medical staff, and 17 deaths.

The cases span 13 provinces in mainland China as well as Thailand, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Taiwan and Macau.

This is all occurring during peak influenza season in China so there are some illnesses around that may appear similar to coronavirus. It’s also a time when millions of people in the region travel home to family for Lunar New Year celebrations, potentially carrying the virus to new places, as we’ve already seen.

We are yet to see a confirmed case in Australia, but that could change any minute. Test results of a Brisbane man who was suspected of having the virus came back clear.

Development of a diagnostic test

China was extraordinarily efficient and open in identifying the virus, a new strain of coronavirus, within just over a week. Chinese scientists sequenced the virus’s genetic code and, within days, shared that information with the world.

This allowed researchers from Germany to rapidly develop and openly share a suite of specific nucleic acid tests that sensitively identify the virus by detecting small amounts of its ribonucleic acid (or RNA, similar to DNA). Researchers in Hong Kong and from the Chinese Centre for Disease Control then published their own different tests.
Four other human coronaviruses (HCoV-22E, HCoV-OC43, HCoV-NL63 and HCoV-HKU1) cause colds, flu-like illnesses and more severe respiratory diseases such as pneumonia. Viral pneumonia is a combination of virus infection of the lungs and our body’s immune response to that damage.

Newborns, the elderly, immunocompromised people and those with underlying disease are at particular risk.

There are also two more infamous coronaviruses that jumped from animals to infect human hosts: SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome).
The new Wuhan coronavirus seems to cause less severe disease than the SARS coronavirus, which is now extinct after its single dramatic outbreak in 2002-4.

MERS was less severe than either, unless the patient was already burdened with underlying disease. MERS continues to transmit from camels to humans, but it’s relatively easy to avoid infection and vaccines are in development.

Because we are at such an early stage of discovery and characterisation of the new Wuhan virus, it’s very difficult to compare it to other viruses or to draw any strong conclusions about how it transmits, and its impact on humans.

How does it spread?

We don’t know where the new virus came from originally. We think it originated in animals, but testing so far has not confirmed a specific animal host. Analysis of the genome suggests it has only recently emerged in humans. So which host were humans exposed to? And how was it transmitted to humans?

Once we know where it came from we can track down and remove the source of the virus.
Some evidence suggests it can also spread between people. We don’t yet know how, but we can make some guesses.

It seems to be a respiratory virus, given the disease primarily involves the lungs, so it’s likely to spread through the same routes as colds and flu: sneezes and coughs propelling droplets into the air or onto hands that then touch other surfaces, or by touching our eyes, nose or mouth after contact with contaminated surfaces.

We also don’t know how easily it spreads. Initially it seemed to require prolonged and close contact, making it harder to catch in day-to-day life. However, there are more recent indications that it spreads more easily between people.

What we know and don’t know

Up to January 22, 17 deaths have tragically occurred from 582 cases (about 3%). This is lower than the proportion who die from influenza-associated pneumonia, which one study estimated to be 10%. It’s a crude comparison, but one we can at least mull over for now.

The number of virus cases is likely to be an underestimate, but we don’t know by how much.

At the moment, colds and flu-like illnesses are common in China. There are also many causes of viral pneumonia – 135 people with pneumonia arrived in Hong Kong from Wuhan between December 31 to January 22. To date only two cases have tested positive for the new virus; most had an influenza virus or other viruses.

So far, we know the new Wuhan coronavirus causes pneumonia and therefore places an extra burden on hospitals. It’s likely transmitting from human to human, but may also still be transmitting from animal to humans. And it can be tested for by professional laboratories.

For now, health authorities are ensuring we are prepared and watching the situation while we await further details.

If or when it does come to Australia, you can protect yourself in the same way as you would against other respiratory illness: by being vigilant about hand-washing and practising good cough and sneeze etiquette, which means coughing or sneezing into your flexed elbow or into a tissue, and washing your hands.

Arguably the most popular musician in the region, Bongo Flava star Diamond Platinumz is set to headline the 29th edition of Koroga Festival, Naivasha Love Edition almost three years after he left fans yearning for more during his maiden performance at the 17th edition.

The Wasafi Classic boss will grace the stage slated for Valentine’s weekend February 14-15th and for the first time, East Africa’s largest outdoor event will be held in Naivasha, inside the splendid Hell’s Gate National Park.

The singer is no stranger in the country, having performed almost a dozen times.  He is expected to entertain his thousands of Kenyan fans on Sunday, February 15 as the headline act.

This edition is a collaboration between Koroga Festival and Naivasha Love Festival forming part of the tourism promotion activities planned for the Valentine’s weekend.

An explosive line up of award-winning artistes are also scheduled to entertain thousands of fans.

Day one will see Khaligraph Jones a.k.a Papa Jones joined by Ochungulo Family and Nadia Mukami.

KING OF MUGITHI

Then on day two, the Kwangwaru singer will be the main act after performances by H_art The Band and king of mugithi Mike Rua.

The Koroga Festival has partnered with Naivasha Love Festival, an event solely managed by Nakuru County Tourism Association, Naivasha Branch, which is made up of stakeholders in the tourism sector.

A section of the stakeholders includes hotels, tour operators, tourism professionals and local businesses doubling up as passionate custodians of the country’s national parks and natural resources particularly within the geographical area.

The main aim of the festival is to attract both local and international tourists into the destination, promote preservation of culture and sensitize the community on the importance of our Natural habitats.

OPPORTUNITY

“We also want to give an opportunity for adventure and sports tourism as well as market the floriculture and eco-tourism in Naivasha town,” Naivasha Love Festival chairperson Peter Kimani said.

Last month, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said that the Koroga Festival Love Edition slated to take place inside Naivasha’s Hells Gate National Park will go on as planned despite oppositions by environmentalists and conservation activists.

Led by Wildlife Direct CEO Paula Kahumbu, the activists had raised concerns arguing that the event co-organised by Capital FM and Naivasha Love Festival was likely to affect core conservation arrears in the park that is home to many wild animals especially birds.

But in a rejoinder, KWS through its Head of Communications Paul Udoto allayed the fears raised by the activists stating that the park has sites designated for hosting events where insecurity and disturbance to the conservancy is tamed.

Capital FM, the organisers of Koroga, through its Commercial Director Farida Idris have also confirmed that they will abide by KWS guidelines to ensure the conservancy isn’t put in danger.

“We wish to assure the public that Koroga Festival will not pose any threat to the park because we will adhere to regulations set out by KWS,” Idris noted.

Mob bars Moha, Aisha Jumwa from addressing BBI press conference

A press conference called by four Coast Members of Parliament (MPs) allied to Deputy President William Ruto in a hotel in Mombasa town was on Friday disrupted by irate youths armed with stones and other crude weapons.

The four MPs led by Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, Mohammed Ali (Nyali), Athman Shariff (Lamu East) and Kilifi women representative Gertrude Mbeyu were chased away by youths shortly after arriving at Lotus Hotel where they had planned to address the media.

Tens of youth armed with stones and clubs blocked the legislators from accessing the hotel forcing them to retract. Members of the press were also not spared by the youths as they did not want them to cover the event.

The MPs later addressed the media outside the hotel and condemned the incident promising to attend the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) meeting scheduled for Saturday.

“If BBI is for inclusivity, then Coast leaders should be given time to give their views since it is happening in Coast region. We shall attend the Tononoka meeting on Saturday and we have a right to air our views,” said Ms Jumwa.

DEPICTS

She added, “What we have seen here today depicts the kind of leaders we have in Mombasa and we know this is just part of the plan to frustrate who have different opinion on BBI and we expect more of such sideshows tomorrow (Saturday).”

Nyali MP on the other hand said they are not being involved in the planning despite them being part of Coast leaders and warned people from outside the region from taking over the programme.

“It is a pity that there is an ongoing meeting at Wild Waters for delegates which is in my constituency but I am not involved. Is this what we are calling building bridges?” asked Mr Ali.

Mr Shariff and Ms Mbeyu did not return to address the media after escaping the youths’ wrath .

After the incident, the group headed to Wild Waters where a delegates meeting to plan for the Tononoka event was being held and were allowed to attend.

On Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen sensationally claimed that some people are planning to humiliate leaders allied to Deputy President Ruto during the Coast region BBI event.

That was after Coast governors led by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi warned the Tanga Tanga leaders against politicising the process, saying the event was a Coastal region affair and outsiders must come with that in mind.

Ruto explains his 2017 stadiums pronouncement and makes new pledge

Deputy President William Ruto was on Thursday at pains to explain his now infamous 2017 pledge that the government would complete the construction of nine stadiums in six months.

Speaking during an interview with NTV, the DP said the promise was not personal but a government one and that the stadiums could not be built because the money set aside for them was directed to other government projects.

Ruto denied that he lied to Kenyans saying they have delivered on other projects like electricity, housing, roads and rail.

“You make it look like I was to get money from my pocket to build the stadiums, this was a Jubilee administration pledge,” he said.

Just before the run-up to the 2013 and 2017 polls, the DP outlined Jubilee government’s commitment to deliver on its promises to Kenyans.

Key among the pledges was building of new state-of-the art stadiums across the country that would see significant improvement in the sports sector.

DIFFERENT COUNTIES

Part of their manifesto in 2013 was to build five stadiums in different counties including Nairobi, Kisumu and Eldoret before 2017.

In 2017, he said, “These stadiums and you can confirm with the Ministry of Sports will be completed either by the end of this year or the first quarter of next year. All the 11 stadiums including the refurbishment of Nyayo.”

The government has, however, to-date not constructed a single stadium.

“Our commitment to deliver on the stadiums is solid. We had a time frame. Of course, unfortunately, as fate would have it, we went into a second election (in 2017) and spent about Sh13 billion part of which was supposed to be deployed to do some of those things,” he explained.

On Thursday during the interview, he accused the media of only asking him about the stadiums which are yet to be completed while ignoring other areas where the government had achieved like roads and rail.

“Why are people just asking about the stadiums as if it is the only thing we promised? Is it because others have been fulfilled? It is unfair,” he said.

Documents by Sports Kenya show that the ambitious pledge by the two in both 2013 and 2017 General Elections, has been frustrated by National Treasury major budget cuts in the last four financial years.

AGENCY

Several contractors engaged by the agency have since abandoned the sites over pending bills, in what could see millions of taxpayers’ money already paid, go into waste.

Ruto, however, vowed to make sure that the promised stadiums are built before 2022 to end the debate once and for all.

The DP said there is ongoing work on the said stadiums with Wote Stadium in Makueni County almost complete.

“I will make sure that we deliver on these stadium promises so that you get another thing to ask in 2022,” he said.

Kenyans, however, were not convinced with what Ruto had said about Wote stadium and they took to Twitter to discredit him.

Australian arrested 3,000 times for drunkenness holds Guinness record for ‘most arrests’

The Guinness World Records has clarified that that the world’s “most arrested” man in an Australian called Tommy Johns.

GWR set the record straight following erroneous reports that Ugandan opposition politician Kizza Besigye was this year named the most arrested man in the world.

Johns was arrested nearly 3,000 times for being drunk and disorderly. His record appeared in the Guinness Book of Records last in 1999.

BRAIN TUMOUR

“Regarding the record title, this record appeared in many editions of our book over the years, the last appearance was in 1999, On September 9, 1982, Tommy Johns of Brisbanne, Queensland, Austria faced his 2000th conviction for drunkenness since 1957. He had been arrested almost 3000 times at the time of his last drink on April 30, 1988,” said the Guinness World Record.

The booze-guzzling man reportedly died from a brain tumour in 1988.

Guinness World Records made the clarification after Nairobi News sought to establish if Mr Besigye had indeed been named the world’s most arrested.

“This is not correct. It does seem to have been very widely misreported,” Guinness World Records responded.

The fake reports had indicated that Mr Besigye had entered the annals of history as the world’s most arrested individual on Monday when the police took him away and detained him at the Nalufenya Police Station in the eastern town of Jinja.

Although the record is not actively open for applications, GWR does not encourage people to strive to break it.

Matatus must obtain license to show content on screens – KFCB

The Kenya Film and Classification Board (KFCB) Chief Executive Ezekiel Mutua has announced that Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) with screens will now be required to obtain licences to show content.

The moral cop called out the transport sector for showing content in their vehicles yet they were not part of the broadcasting sector.

“Those who have mounted screens in their vehicles, they should either remove them or take licences for the right content,” said Dr Mutua.

Section 12 of the Films and Stage Plays Act makes it an offence for any person to “exhibit any film at an exhibition to which the public are admitted or distribute such film” unless he is registered as an exhibitor or distributor by the KFCB and issued with a certificate.

The Act further prohibits the distribution, exhibition or broadcasting, either publicly or privately of any film or class of film that has not been examined and approved by the KFCB.

Since the Film and Stage Plays Act defines “public exhibition” as “an exhibition to which the public are admitted, whether on payment or gratuitously,” PSVs that display audio-visual content can be classified as executing a public exhibition function.

However, on the other hand, PSVs cannot be classified as broadcasters, but they need to pay Sh2,000, failure to which they face charges of violating the Films And Stage Plays Act.

Any person who is found guilty of an offence under Films And Stage Plays Act shall be liable to a fine not exceeding Sh100,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or both.

Screening of the content in the vehicles is considered as public exhibition, Dr Mutua insisted adding that screening of unrated content in PSVs and exposure of children to obscenity goes against the Films and Stage Plays Act Cap 222, the Sexual Offences Act of 2006 and Children’s Act.

Is Lillian Muli crushing on comedian Oga Obinna?

Is Citizen TV news anchor Lilian Muli in love?

This is the question many of her fans are asking after she revealed the man she is currently crushing on in a response to a question asked by Nation FM breakfast show host Antoneosoul.

The mother of two said that she loved Oga Obinna and even dared the comedian to ask her out on a date to get an explanation on why she is digging him.

Is this a real crush or are they pulling our legs? Time will tell.

Muli’s declaration comes as a surprise to many especially after she publicly came out last year to state that she is back together with her ‘community husband’ Jared Nevaton.

Nevaton is the father of her second child.

The two have been in an on and off relationship that once resulted in a nasty public break up when the TV queen accused her baby daddy of sleeping around and branded him a ‘community husband.’

However, they later kissed and made up.

Prior to Nevaton, Lillian Muli was married to Moses Kanene for seven years. They have a son, Josh, whom they continue to co-parent.

Comedian Obinna on the other hand is married with four children.

Pregnant? Forget about getting a US tourist visa

The US State Department on Thursday published a new rule aimed at denying tourist visas to pregnant women if consular officials believe the primary purpose of their visit is to give birth in the United States.

The Donald Trump administration said it is seeking to end “birth tourism”, which is the practice of pregnant foreign women visiting the US to give birth so that their babies can acquire American citizenship.

Under the new rule, consular officials at the embassy will have authority to deny a B non-immigrant visitor visa to an applicant if they believe their “primary purpose” is to give birth in the US.

“If a consular officer has reason to believe a B non-immigrant visa applicant will give birth in the United States, the applicant is presumed to be seeking a visa for the primary purpose of obtaining US citizenship for the child,” the rule reads in part.

According to the rule, in order to get a visa, the applicant must establish, to the satisfaction of a consular officer, a legitimate primary purpose other than obtaining US citizenship for a child by giving birth in the United States.

White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham on Thursday issued a statement saying that the new rule closes an immigration loophole that creates burden on hospital resources, adding that it “will also defend American taxpayers from having their hard-earned dollars siphoned away to finance the direct and downstream costs associated with birth tourism.”

The State Department however clarified that it will continue issuing visitor visas to pregnant women whose travel purpose is to seek medical treatment in the US.

The applicant will also need to provide to the consular officer that a medical practitioner or medical facility in the US has agreed to offer such treatment.

The Associated Press last year reported that most of the “birth tourists” are women from China, Russia and Nigeria.

President Trump has long expressed his opposition to birthright citizenship, which grants citizenship to all persons born in the United States.

In 2018, he threatened to end, through an executive order, automatic citizenship to babies born in the US to non-citizens.

“So-called Birthright Citizenship, which costs our Country billions of dollars and is very unfair to our citizens, will be ended one way or the other,” President Trump twitted in 2018.

Legal scholars have however said the president does not have authority to end birthright citizenship, which is guaranteed in the 14th amendment of the US constitution.

“It’s ridiculous. And it has to end,” said Trump of the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment that grants U.S. citizenship to those born on U.S. soil.

The new rule becomes effective on Friday, January 24, when it is published in the Federal Register.

City women reveal their first encounters with mothers-in-law

Nairobi women have shared their first encounters with their mothers-in-law and how the moment influenced their ensuing relationships.

While dating and finally getting married to a good man is the ultimate dream for most of them, meeting the mother in-law appears to be their worst nightmare.

The conversation was sparked by one online user in a private Facebook group for Nairobi wives who asked other members to share their experiences of the first day they were introduced to their partner’s mother.

Also, what mode of persuasion did they use to win her favours.

“Ladies, how was the first introduction to the in-laws? What did you do to win the mother in law asireact vibaya aone kweli kijanake alioa?” asked one online user.

Other wives joined in saying that it was better to be yourself rather than pretend to be someone else just so the mother-in-law can like you.

While others gave hilarious narrations of how they went about wooing her.

EXTREMELY DIFFICULT

“Simply be yourself……living a life of pretence in order to please someone is extremely difficult and at some point you will grow tired and reveal your true identity and that is when issues will arise. I knew from where I came from they won’t like it, so I was just myself. They either love me or hate me down the line 16yrs an still it’s as if I don’t exist, and I don’t give a damn,” said an online user.

“Leave this pple alone, u will never impress them no matter how hard u try!” wrote another online user.

“When my MIL learnt abt her son & I, she called me all sorts of names went to the extent of insulting my parents. wats funny is that I never had the energy to answer her or fight her back. Its 3yrs down the line & this week she called hubby to tell him twende Christmas & he was like, no thanks tuko sawa. I always wonder wat nuggs these MIL’s!” commented another online user.

“Nilipelekwa nikiwa na ball, so after introduction and stuff niliingia bed until supper time….sijui kama nilipendwa ama sikupendwa mimi,” stated one online user.

“Mi niliamka 4 washed the goats, cows na sungura na nikazipaka mafuta then proceeded to milk them halafu nikapika chai na pancakes. By the time waliamka 7 nikawaserve and as they were having breakfast nikaenda nikaosha gate na miti na maua zote kwa compound and when i finished nikakuta wamekaa sitting room vile nilikuja wakanyamaza and the Mil went to the bedroom akakuja na all my things packed wakaniambia noende hawataki mpenzi jini for their son.Since then i learned that nothing you can do for people can make them like you and you just need to be yourself and the right ones will love you just the way you are na wasiokupenda achana nao juu the road to heaven does not pass through their yard after all ati wakikuchukia they will block your passage,” said one online user.

“Let mothers-in-law be, if she doesn’t like you, no matter what you do, she will never do. Just treat in-laws with respect,” commented another online user.

“Mother in law akupende and the ritual ya vita na daughter-in-law nani atafanya. Utakuwa the whole family’s queen if u marry the black sheep. But try the ‘bread winner’,” said one onl

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations on Thursday hosted the daughter of a senior traffic officer, Mr Alfred Ndalana who was found dead under mysterious circumstances in July 2016.

Ndalana Mutheu had reached out to DCI to investigate the death of her father whom colleagues said he had committed suicide just hours after undergoing police vetting and answering tough questions.

At the Corporate Communications and Public Affairs office, Mutheu who was accompanied by family members and her legal team, were briefed on the inquest of the death of her father.

“Ndalana mutheu accompanied by her family and legal counsel came to our office as requested. They were briefed on the contents of the inquest file which is actively being adjudicated in court and is set for progressive hearing on 19th February 2020,” DCI tweeted.

Twitter

On Saturday, she tweeted details of her father’s death alleging that Mr Ndalana was murdered by his juniors who were working on orders from senior police officers.

“Later they addressed him and got rid of his body by dumping it at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga mortuary, but none of the officers involved in the activity briefed the family about it,” Ms. Mutheu said in a series of tweets.

Ms Mutheu also said that her mother, who runs a salon in Buruburu, was robbed of her money by gunmen and to date, no action has been taken despite reporting the incident to the police.

According to her, she was also threatened by two men who followed her to university warning that they would deal with her.

The family claimed that it has never been issued with a postmortem report after the death of Mr Ndalana and the investigating officers took the family round in circles.

Kenyans earning big salaries, but where does it all go? – World Bank

Kenya is among countries with the highest labour costs in Sub-Saharan Africa, a new report reveals.

According to latest World Bank survey on Global Value Chains (GVC), Kenya’s labour costs are twice the average Gross Domestic Product (GDP) putting the country at a precarious position in the international market.

The bloated wage rate limits Kenya’s competitiveness in the world market putting it at a disadvantage in basic manufacturing activities.

Since manufacturers prefer a balance between wage levels and output, Kenya is unlikely to attract goods in the international market unless it streamlines its wage levels.

BASIC MANUFACTURING

“Many countries with low levels of per capita income and large pools of moderately skilled, underemployed labor find themselves priced out of the market for GVC investments in basic manufacturing activities because of uncompetitive labour costs,” says the report signed by World Bank President, David R. Malpass.

The survey, which analysed data collected from 5,500 companies in 29 countries, indicated the cost of labour in manufacturing firms in the African region, is significantly higher for every given level of GDP with exception of Ethiopia where the wage levels are at par with output levels.

The report, which comes even as Kenyans are grappling with the scourge of unemployment and dissatisfaction with remunerations, attributed the noncompetitive labour costs to a number of factors including exorbitant forex rate and rigid labour policies.

“Over-valued exchange rates and restrictive labour regulations raise the cost of labour, preventing labour abundant countries from taking advantage of their endowments,” states the report.

Run away exchange rates are most prevalent in countries that rely in natural resources, therefore it becomes a problem when such countries join the basic value chains in manufacturing.

Heavy rains put Kenya at risk of mosquito-borne diseases

$

Kenya experienced above-average rainfall since October 2019, causing landslides and deaths. Some rivers burst their banks and dams overflowed for the first time in years.

The rains have subsided but the danger isn’t over. There is a likelihood of outbreaks of various mosquito-borne diseases such as Rift Valley fever, malaria, dengue and chikungunya fever. Prolonged rains increase the amount of stagnant water in the environment – in which mosquitoes breed.

The meteorological department attributed the heavy rains experienced in most parts of the country to unusual sea surface temperatures in the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Rains like these were previously associated with outbreaks of Rift Valley fever more than any other disease.

Knowing how mosquito-borne diseases are transmitted to animals and humans can help countries to prevent and cope with outbreaks.

Rift Valley fever

Cases of the disease were first reported in the Rift Valley province of Kenya in 1930. It is caused by a virus that infects both livestock and humans. Outbreaks are usually associated with unusually heavy rainfall, extensive flooding of low-lying grassland depressions called dambos and mass emergence of Aedes mosquitoes. The mosquitoes deposit their eggs in soil. The eggs can remain viable for years even in dry conditions and hatch after heavy persistent rains. Emerging infected adult female mosquitoes transmit the virus to nearby animals, including sheep, goats, cattle and camels. These in turn infect more mosquitoes. Another group of insects, mainly from the Culex, Anopheles and Mansonia species, may then take over the breeding sites and pass the virus to more animals and humans.

Rift Valley fever causes livestock to abort or die at birth. In humans it causes flu-like illness – and sometimes encephalitis, retinitis and generalised hemorrhagic syndrome. Mosquitoes can transmit Rift Valley fever to humans through bites. But studies suggest that severe human infections are a result of direct or indirect contact with blood, secretions or tissue of infected animals.

During the 2006-2007 outbreak, Kenya suffered losses of $32 million from animal deaths, vaccination costs and impact on trade. More than 150 people died and over 700 were hospitalised. This put a strain on the already overstretched public health resources. The 1997–1998 outbreak in East Africa (Kenya, Somalia, and Tanzania) affected over 100,000 people and caused 170 deaths in Kenya. Outbreaks have also been reported in other African and Middle Eastern countries.

In 2006, satellite measurements of global and regional sea surface temperature, elevated rainfall data and the difference in vegetation index data were used to predict the outbreak three months before cases were confirmed. Such early warning systems should enable authorities to take action to avert epidemics.

Other measures include controlling mosquito larvae at breeding sites.

Animals can be immunised. Rift Valley fever infection is usually reported in livestock before humans as animals mainly get infected by mosquito bites while humans get the virus mainly from infected animals. It would help to have an active surveillance system to detect new cases in animals. Livestock movement should be restricted in an outbreak.

Public health education should focus on reducing the risk of transmission from animals to people. This is done by practising hand hygiene and wearing gloves and other protective equipment when handling sick animals. It’s not safe to consume fresh blood, raw milk or animal tissue – these products should be thoroughly cooked first. It’s also advisable to use mosquito nets and insect repellent.

Healthcare workers should be careful when handling patients and their specimens even if a case of Rift Valley fever is not yet confirmed.

Malaria

Malaria is a risk to 70% of Kenya’s 47.5 million people, especially communities around Lake Victoria and off the coast. In Kenya, it’s mainly caused by the protozoan Plasmodium falciparum transmitted by the Anopheles species mosquitoes, which breed in swamps that develop during the rainy seasons. But during prolonged rains even areas at higher altitudes are at risk. Malaria outbreaks can be more severe in highlands because people have not developed immunity against the disease, or aren’t familiar with the symptoms and may go to hospital too late.

To avoid malaria, people need to use mosquito nets and insecticides. Local hospitals should be sure to have stocks of anti-malarial drugs and supplementary food for children under five, who are the most severely affected.

Dengue and chikungunya fever

Kenya is one of several countries around the world experiencing unprecedented outbreaks of chikungunya and dengue fever viruses transmitted to humans by the Aedes species mosquitoes. The diseases are mainly characterised by fever and severe joint pain.

Regions at highest risks are the coastline, especially the city of Mombasa and the north eastern regions that have reported recurrent outbreaks in recent years.

These two viruses have no vaccines or treatment. The only way to prevent and control an outbreak is by controlling mosquitoes.

Recent research on the Aedes aegypti has shown that it often breeds in garbage (like abandoned car tyres, plastic containers and tins), water containers and shaded areas. Now is a good time to spray indoors against these mosquitoes and to get rid of garbage that provides breeding sites. People can also drain stagnant water, clear bushes and empty water storage tanks.

As the rains in Kenya subside, it’s important that national and county authorities are well prepared and equipped to prevent illness and deaths that might result from outbreaks of these mosquito borne diseases.

Uasin Gishu County Woman Representative Gladys Shollei has claimed that photos of her with a white man that have gone viral on social media are being used by someone close to her for political reasons.

In a brief media press conference at an Eldoret hotel, on Friday evening, Shollei said that the photos doing rounds on different social media platforms have nothing to do with her integrity.

“Of late, someone very close to me has been trying to damage my reputation but they should know that I’ll not be responding to them,” said Shollei elected on a Jubilee Party ticket.

She went on, “Photos doing rounds have nothing to do with my character and I will continue to provide for my children. I believe no human can destroy me.”

SERVING HER CONSTITUENTS

The lawmaker who recently divorced former managing director of Standard Group Sam Shollei said she will not allow people she described as political opponents to distract her from serving her constituents.

“As an elected leader, I’ll not allow people to distract me from serving my people and that is my main concern at the moment,” she added.

Ms Shollei said that she was not raised to be an evil person saying that no amount of smear campaign will distract her from serving Kenyans.

“I thank God that I attended walk on fire training that made me stay focused and never to be confused,” added Shollei.

She said that she was focused on addressing issues affecting the country including youth employment, and maize and milk prices, among others.

“I shall remain true to what I am supposed to do. You will never hear me mentioning this issue ever again because I don’t want it to take my focus from the work that I am supposed to be doing for my people,” she pledged.

She said that this was not her first challenge and it will not be the last that she is facing in her life.

“I remain undeterred from discharging my duty to the people who elected me,” she said.

Gatundu South Member of Parliament has been set free on a Sh20,000 cash bail after denying charges of assaulting a female political activist.

The case is set for mention on February 8 before Judge Martha Mutuku.

The legislator was charged with assaulting a political commentator, Joyce Wanja, which saw him apprehended and detained at Kilimani Police Station on February 8.

Media station

In a viral video which circulated on social media, Wanja elicited reactions when she narrated how the politician allegedly attacked her on December 8, within the premises of a local media station.

“Nilichapwa na Moses Kuria tarehe nane mwezi wa December tukiwa kwa jumba la Royal Media Services. Nilikuwa nimeitwa show ya Kiririmbi kudiscuss mambo ya BBI,” she narrated.

She went on to divulge how the MP clobbered and injured her when she criticised him about uncouth utterances he had made earlier during a fundraiser for orphans in Kiambu county.

“Aliongea maneno ambayo haikuwa inaambatana na event. Tena aliongea ile haifai kuongelewa mbele ya watoto,” she said.

Wanja evoked heated debated among netizens when she took to Twitter claiming her quest for justice had borne no fruits as the police had yet to take a legal action against Kuria.

Harmonize in trouble again for stealing Mr Nice’s beats

Bongo flava artiste Harmonize has landed himself in trouble yet again after legendary Tanzania singer Mr Nice accused him of stealing his beats for his latest song Hainistui.

The accusation comes two months after Kenyan producer and singer Magix Enga accused Harmonize of sampling the beats of his Dundaing hit song featuring King Kaka for his hit Uno without his permission.

Magix Enga gave Harmonize a seven-day ultimatum to pull down the song from his YouTube channel but the bongo flava star didn’t heed the call.

With the snob, Magix Enga was forced to issue a strike with the YouTube team and the song was immediately pulled down.

Being his first single since his nasty departure from Diamond’s WCB Wasafi records, Harmonize wasn’t going to mess up the hype, buzz and vibe the song had created.

He was forced to swallow his pride and reached out to Magix Enga sorting out the issue and the song was allowed back on his channel three days later.

But even with that, clearly Harmonize didn’t learn his lessons as he went ahead to sample the beats of Mr Nice hit song King’asti, and used them in his third solo since ditching WCB, Hainistui released three weeks ago.

“Harmonize has sampled my beats without my approval. It hurts. It’s like when you got this child you love in the family then he/she goes ahead to still from you” An irritated Mr Nice, who released King’asti 13 years ago, blasted him.

However, Mr Nice hasn’t specified what action he is going to take against him. Harmonize’s manager popularly known as Mjerumani, has also appeared to confirm that indeed the singer sampled the beats and the two artistes are currently trying to iron out the issue.

“Hiyo taarifa ipo na mimi niliiona kwenye mtandao mmoja ila inashughulikiwa lakini siwezi kukuambia imefikia wapi kwa sababu inawahusu watu wawili. Ni jambo la msanii ma msanii, sasa sioni kama ni busara kuweka wazi kwenye media,” Mjerumani stated.

Drama as police raid Mildred Owiso’s home

Activist and blogger Mildred Atty Owiso was on Saturday morning arrested by almost a dozen police officers who raided her house.

Police lobbed teargas in the dawn raid as they forced their way into her premises in Buruburu estate. The activist streamed the altercation live on Facebook page, Buyer Beware.

Some officers could be seen jumping over her locked gate while others were seen on top of her house.

Her arrest is believed to be connected to a video clip which she shared on social media on Thursday of a traffic police officer who entered her car along Jogoo Road over a traffic offence.

In the video clip, the controversial blogger adamantly refused to drive to a police station with the male officer in her car.

ENTER HER CAR

She argued that the officer had no right to enter her car.

According to Traffic Act Section 105, any police officer in uniform is allowed to stop any vehicle on the road and enter it during the routine inspection.

“It shall be lawful for any police officer in uniform to stop any vehicle, and for any police officer, licensing officer or inspector, (a) to enter any vehicle; (b) to drive any vehicle or cause any vehicle to be driven; (c) upon reasonable suspicion of any offense under this Act, to order and require the owner of any vehicle to bring the vehicle to him,” the traffic Act reads in part.

It further states that any person who fails to comply with any instructions given under this section shall be guilty of an offence and liable on a first conviction, to a fine not exceeding Sh30,000 and for a second or subsequent conviction, to a fine not exceeding Sh50,000 or to imprisonment for a term of one year.

Instead, she demanded to be booked and notified about the station she should meet the policeman, if at all she had a traffic offence.

Other motorists and road users quickly milled around the car which had been parked at a Shell petrol station upon hearing the loud altercation between her and the police officer.

The reluctant police officer stayed unshaken at the back seat of the vehicle, which forced the angry mob to eject him out of the car and stopped at beating him up following appeals by some of them.

The office, who at the time did not have his identification number pinned on his uniform, was seen frantically making calls to unknown persons as the enraged mob grew even bigger.

Our calls to Buru buru Sub County Police Commander (SCPC) Adamson Bungei over the Saturday incident went unanswered.

The National Police Service ACT of 2011 in section 61(2) states that a Police officer in uniform shall at all times affix a name tag or identifiable Service number in a clearly visible part of the uniform.
