Mombasa based singer Nyota Ndogo is set to launch a campaign to fight the practise of men hiring out their wives to tourists at the coast as a source of income.

The singer said the cultural practice is prevalent in Kilifi county that has led to an increase of HIV infections.

She will soon release a new song, Subira, as part of the campaign.

“There are traditions that have been passed with time, especially now with the widespread of HIV. Women are now forced to go out and engage in prostitution just to make ends meet, their men are too lazy to work,” she told Nairobi News on phone on Monday.

The practice of hiring out wives was brought to her attention by women during a performance in Kilifi in 2014. The women pulled her aside and gave her tales of how they fend for their husbands and children.

#‎subira.”

“I am releasing a song next month titled Subira which will also launch the tour that I am planning. It is time that as artistes we do more than just sing, we should start talking about these issues affecting the community especially women. This will be part of my agenda on my tour,”  Nyota Ndogo told Nairobi News.

Pain at the pump as fuel prices rise

Fuel prices increased on Tuesday for the second month in a row due to rising global oil prices.

Petrol is up Sh1.92 a litre to Sh86.17 in Nairobi, while diesel – mainly used to power trucks, buses and industrial machinery – increased by Sh3.34 to Sh73.71 a litre.

Kerosene, mainly used by poor homes for lighting and cooking, is up by Sh3.82 to Sh50.80, according to new prices released by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

The new pump prices will be in place for the next one month.

Treasury recently raised the road maintenance levy from Sh12 per litre of diesel or petrol to Sh18 in the budget for the new financial year.

Kerosene users will bear the cost burden of Sh7.20 a litre that has been introduced as excise duty to discourage oil marketers from mixing it with diesel in pursuit of higher margins.

Kerosene was previously zero-rated and is not charged the roads maintenance levy, making it cheaper.

Shock as kidnappers kill boy after pocketing Sh150k ransom

Mr George Ngugi and his wife Jerusha Wairimu (left) outside the chapel at Mater Hospital in Nairobi on June 14, 2016 after prayers for their son Nathaniel, 5, (right) who was killed by kidnappers on Saturday. He had been missing for two weeks. Ms Wairimu is a nurse at the hospital.

Friends and relatives are struggling to come to terms with the cruel death of five-year-old Nathaniel Mwangi Ng’iru, who was strangled and his neck broken by kidnappers.

The nursery school pupil was playing with his friends outside his home in Obama Estate on Kangundo Road, Nairobi, on May 28 when a “man with a scar under his eye” got hold of him.

According to one of Nathaniel’s playmates, the man “had been watching them play a game of hide and seek for a while”.

HELD HOSTAGE

He later got hold of Nathaniel, held him hostage for nearly two weeks, before the boy’s body was found on the railway in Dandora.

According to the parents, Ms Jerusha Wairimu and Mr George Ng’iru, their son’s friends got concerned when he hid for too long during the game.

His older brother Nigel Ngugi went out to look for him in vain. It dawned on the family that he might have been abducted.

“We received several calls from his abductors asking for money. From the onset, it was clear that they would harm him as they kept saying we had to deposit the money or else make another ‘Mwangi’.”

To erase any doubts that they had the boy in captivity, the abductors put Nathaniel’s clothes in a black polythene bag and called the parents to go find it somewhere in the estate.

“It was then that we knew they had him and we had to find the money they were asking for, only that it was too much for us to raise Sh3 million. We managed Sh150,000, sent it to them with the promise that they would release him,” he said.

But it was not to be.

TEXT IN KIKUYU

The abductors sent the family a text in Kikuyu, telling them that the ransom they had sent was “very little, that can only buy goats”.

“We could not believe it. We were pleading with them to be considerate and not harm him, even saying we will be sending them money for his food. We asked to speak to him but they refused,” said Ms Wairimu.

The family suspects the abductor might have been known to their son and feared the boy would reveal his identity if he was released.

Said Mr Ngiru: “He was our second born and we loved his great personality. It was heartbreaking when we were called on June 11 at 7am that they had found his body. He was bleeding, had bruises and a rope on his neck and his legs bound. But, he was still warm.”

CRUEL DEATH

His uncle, John Njoroge, termed the incident a traumatising time for the family, given the cruel nature of his nephew’s death and the heartlessness exhibited by the abductors.

Still trying to understand the motive behind Nathaniel’s killing, the family has started making preparations to lay him to rest, with the hope that the police and the ongoing criminal investigation will bring the killers to book.

On Tuesday, a special mass was held at Mater Hospital — where his mother works — and there was no dry eye in the chapel, which was filled to the brim.

The priest, the Reverend James Wanjau, encouraged the family, telling them Nathaniel was now an angel who is watching over them.

“What kind of people take lives of such innocent children? What was going through their minds? We pray that God forgives them,” said the priest.

Shortly after, a post-mortem exam was conducted ahead of his funeral tomorrow at his grandparents home in Ngemwa village, Kiambu County.

There was drama in Busati village in Sironko District in Uganda at the weekend after two close friends and business partners swapped wives to settle a long standing extra-marital affair.

The duo, Mr Steven Wesonga and Mr David Woisi agreed on June, 11, 2016 in a village meeting with residents to exchange their wives in a public gala.

They have reportedly been engaging in extra-marital affair with each other’s wife for a long time.

Mr Wesonga took on Ms Sarah Muduwa, the wife to Mr Woisi.

Mr Woisi in return married Mr Wesonga’s wife, Ms Annette Namataka.

Mr Wesonga has five children with his former wife, while Mr Woisi had two children with his wife.

RIGHT DECISION

Ms Rose Manyanya, the women Councillor representing Busati parish in Bukise Sub County, said the two made a right decision to follow their hearts instead of pretending.

“They agreed amicably and we have supported their decision,” she said.

Mr Wesonga during the impromptu introduction ceremony told Daily Monitor that he was happy with the whole arrangement.

“I am happy now. I also wish my colleague success with his new wife, who has been my wife,” she said.

Mr Woisi also said he was okay with the arrangement but expressed reservation on why his colleague looked too excited.

Mr Ayub Magombe, a resident, however, termed it as the highest form of immorality, which he said is unacceptable.

“It’s morally wrong to exchange women. It sets a wrong precedent for the new generation,” he said.

City tycoon offers Sh9.9 billion for Britam director’s stake

Billionaire businessman Peter Munga is betting big on Britam with the announcement of his intention to acquire a 23.3 per cent stake in the listed financial services firm at an estimated cost of up to Sh9.9 billion.

The deal, which was announced on Tuesday, indicates that Mr Munga, through his investment vehicle, Plum LLP, is acquiring the stake belonging to Mr Dawood Rawat — the disgraced Mauritian director of the firm — temporarily, as Britam searches for a strategic investor to buy from him.

This means that Mr Munga is willing to put the substantial amount of money at stake in the hope that Britam’s fortunes will change for the better and allow him to sell at a premium.

The Mauritian Government is disposing of the 452,504,000 shares seized from Mr Rawat — who it accused of running a Ponzi scheme — in a transaction it hopes will help recover the Sh9.9 billion it paid victims of the fraud.

The Mauritian Government could prize the stake at Sh9.9 billion but leave room for negotiations based on the current market price.

Mr Rawat’s shares are currently valued at Sh6.3 billion based on Britam’s trading price of Sh14 per share at the Nairobi Securities Exchange, meaning that either the Mauritian Government will have to take a haircut or Mr Munga places a huge bet on the stake to pull the deal through.

“The proposed acquisition will give Britam and its shareholders the time it needs to identify a strategic investor with the institutional fit to support the company in the future,” said Plum LLP, in a public statement signed by Mr Munga, who declined to reveal the price at which he is buying the stake, citing confidentiality clauses in the agreement.

He, however, confirmed he had already paid a commitment fee and was waiting for regulatory approvals to complete the transaction.

Mauritian Minister for Financial Services Sudarshan Bhadain told the country’s parliament on March 29 that the government had opted to retain Britam’s shares instead of selling them before the June 30, 2015 deadline in the hope of fetching a better price.

The Mauritian Government took a 3.5 billion Mauritian Rupee (Sh9.9 billion) loan from its central bank to pay investors in Mr Rawat’s fraudulent scheme, while awaiting a better price on the tycoon’s Britam stake.

“We will have to repay that loan and we will repay that loan through the recovery procedures,” the minister is quoted saying in the Mauritian parliament’s hansard.

Mr Munga is betting on a steady recovery of the Britam share that was trading at around Sh28 in April last year before the assets were seized.

“I invested in Britam when I was 30 years old and I would not want to see someone who is not aligned to our strategy of growing the company come in,” Mr Munga said.

Upon completion of the deal, Mr Munga’s stake in Britam will rise to 38.5 per cent, worth Sh10.3 billion at the current price of Sh14 per share. The share has gained 19.3 per cent in the last three months.

Angela Angwenyi’s company to be investigated over Sh302m GoK contract

A company owned by former radio queen Angela Angwenyi will be investigated by the National Assembly after the Auditor General questioned why it was awarded a contract for publicity for the Planning department, at a cost of Sh302.46 million.

Ms Angwenyi’s firm, Out of the Box Solutions Ltd, was awarded the contract cited as a sensitisation programme, but according to the Auditor General Edward Ouko, it was a “vague job”.

RADIO CAREER

Ms Angwenyi ended her 10-year radio career on June 26, last when she hosted her final breakfast show on Nation FM.

Planning is a department under the ministry of Devolution. At the time Ms Angwenyi won the contract, the ministry was headed by Anne Waiguru, who bowed to public pressure last year and resigned over a multimillion-shilling corruption scandal at the National Youth Service.

Ms Angwenyi’s company’s job involved providing information to the women, youth and disabled who would benefit from the 30 per cent government procurement reservation under the Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO) initiative.

NEW TENDERS

To achieve this, the firm was to hold county forums, run media advertisements and create a website and SMS service that would update the groups on new tenders in their respective categories.

The project was to be carried out in phases and after the presentation of an inception report, the firm was to be paid a percentage of the amount.

The latest Auditor General’s report states that officially, the contract was for “consultancy to offer users support services and conduct sensitisation campaigns to enhance access to the 30 per cent reservation of government procurement opportunities for the youth, women and persons with disability”.

But the long title aside, it was a vague job and there was no way of ascertaining whether the schedule of activities set out had been achieved before payment was made, according to Mr Ouko.

MEASURABLE TARGETS

“It was, therefore, possible to make payments as provided in the schedule of activities without the purpose being achieved. Payments ought to be based on achievements of measurable targets of the impact of the sensitisation campaigns,” the Auditor General said in his report.

This was especially the case in a payment of Sh90.74 million made on August 13, 2015, he added.

So suspicious was the bank when the big payment was made from the ministry’s coffers that it asked the Planning Department to confirm, through the Central Bank, whether they had the right client.

“No document was provided for audit to confirm that indeed the beneficiary and details of the payment were meant for Out of the Box Solutions Ltd,” the Auditor-General concluded.

Ms Angwenyi was not available for a comment due to contractual agreement.

Brazilian forward Thiago Lima Da Silva has finally been cleared to play in the Kenyan Premier League.

The South American footballer arrived in the country last week and consequently agreed a deal in principle to link up with his compatriot coach Ze Maria at champions Gor Mahia.

JUNE TRANSFERS

Gor Mahia’s midfield anchorman Khalid Aucho on Wednesday bagged the Sportpesa/SJAK Player for the Month of May.

The explosive box-to-box Ugandan midfielder claimed the gong on 17 votes ahead of teammate Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma and Ulinzi Stars’ forward John Mark Makwatta, both of whom got 15 votes. Sony Sugar’s defensive midfielder Frederick ‘Uche’ Onyango was fourth with 13 votes.

Aucho, who was clearly surprised by the feat, dedicated the award to his late brother who was interred in Uganda last week.

“I didn’t expect to get the award. In fact, I thought it would be one of my colleagues here. But I’m happy and I thank God for it. It feels good to be recognized after hard work,” he said shortly after he was presented with the trophy at the team’s training base at Camp Toyoyo.

POTENTIAL MOVE

The Ugandan international, who has so far been linked with a potential move to Scottish Premier League giants, Rangers, also talked about his future.

“It (a move to Rangers) would be good for my career because that’s a different team and league. But at the moment, I’m patient and focusing on duties at Gor Mahia. If it happens, then it’s fine,” he said.

An important cog in coach Jose Marcelo’s game plan, Aucho guided K’Ogalo to four victories in the team’s stormy run in the month of May, scoring a goal and providing three assists.

For his heroics, he took home Sh100, 000, a 43-inch LG television set and a personalised trophy.

Aucho becomes the fourth recipient of the monthly award after Timothy Otieno of Posta Rangers who claimed it in February, Sharif Mohamed (Bandari, March), and Wycliffe Ochomo (Muhoroni Youth, April).

The rare sight of pregnant officer caught on camera carrying tear gas canisters at Pangani police station on Wednesday has left many in awe.

The unidentified officer appeared unperturbed by the traffic of relatives and friends who were at the station to visit Members of Parliament held over alleged hate speech.

Under normal police practise, pregnant officers are not deployed to any riot activity or to quell public disorder. Such assignments are considered too risky for them because of the possibility of physical harm or inhaling tear gas, which may subsequently cause complications to the pregnancy.

The pregnant officer in a yellow maternity dress appeared to be enjoying a fun moment with her female colleague who was in anti-riot gear.

Pregnant officers are routinely assigned back-office duties in the records department where they issue abstracts and permits to the public.

They can also be in the crime office to write statements from members of the public, or at the gender and children’s desk to handle cases of defilement and rape.

Pregnant officers are not allowed to attend promotion-related courses or training.

And as the baby bump continues to grow, officers are allowed to wear civilian clothes, but can not deal with front office duties.
