Gor Mahia youngster Tobias Otieno recently moved to the US to join second-tier side Union Omaha and this was termed as a big loss for the Kenyan champions as the youngster had cemented his position in the heart of the midfield.

K’Ogalo have, however, moved with speed to replace him by snapping up another highly rated midfielder Nicholas Omondi from National Super League (NSL) side Kibera BlackStars.

Team Manager Jolawi Obondo confirms the development to Nairobi News saying they are happy to land the signature of the player who had been hunted by a number of clubs in and out of the country.

“He is a very good player and he has joined us on a two-year contract with a clear exit clause. We, however, hope to have him in the club for a long period. He is a young player who can grow and develop to become a dependable midfielder for club and country,” he said.

Online scam! Kenyan defrauds Arsenal fan in the UK

Popular Arsenal Fans channel AFTV has exposed a Kenyan who recently defrauded an Arsenal fan seeking to purchase a match day ticket off his $100 (approximately Sh 10,000).

The Kenyan has a fake Twitter account pretending to be an English man and requested for the payment to be done via PayPal only for his real name to be revealed as Samuel Mwangi.

After the payment had been sent, he took a while to send the ticket as agreed giving excuses and eventually blocked the buyer who has since reported the incident to PayPal.

Mid last year, a sting operation by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) caught up with two Kenyans who were at the center of cybercrime that defrauded Fairfax County in the US millions of dollars after faking emails pretending to be from giant computer manufacturing firm Dell asking for payments to be rerouted to another account.

It turned out to be a scam, and two Kenyans, Robert Mutua and Jeffrey Sila were at the center of it all.

AFTV has now warned fans to be aware of online scammers who are taking advantage of their desperation to acquire tickets.

It is commonplace for fans to buy tickets from the black market as speculators buy them in bulk within hours of offering.

Miguna sends tribute to late father-in-law from Canada

Exiled Lawyer Miguna Miguna has penned a moving tribute to his late father-in-law after missing the burial which was to be held today.

Miguna’s effort to return to Kenya and attend the burial of his father-in-law Benson Awange ran into headwinds after the government issued a red alert to all airlines not to fly him to Nairobi or any other African country. Miguna later returned to Canada.

“Having waited for President Uhuru Kenyatta and his appointees at the ministries of Interior and Immigration to obey court orders and revoke their illegal “red alerts” to no avail, I’ve no option but to return to exile in Canada. I’ll not surrender. The struggle continues. Viva!” he tweeted on Tuesday.

Miguna in his tribute mentioned he had a good relationship with his father-in-law but apologised for not speaking to him on January 1, 2020.

His father in law died on January 2, 2020.

RAW POWER

“I apologise to Jaduong’ na Omolo Awange for me not having the raw power to attend the funeral by force. But I am here with you in spirit. When I had announced my intention to fly to Kenya in December 15, 2019, Jaduong’ Omolo Awange was still alive and healthy. Hours before the day of his passing, on January 1, 2020, Mzee Omolo Awange had informed us that he was feeling okay,” said Miguna.

“I apologise for him for not having spoken with him for an extended period of time. The day before he passed on, my lovely wife Jane had telephoned and spoken with him. My folly was to arrange to speak with him the next day, being January 2nd instead of January 1st.”

According to Miguna, his father-in-law loved reading books and was able to read all his books.

“Mzee Omolo Awange like me, he loved reading. He read and analysed all the three national circulating newspapers in Kenya on a daily basis. He also closely scrutinized the week-end newspapers. He would frequently send me short text messages enquiring of my thoughts and opinion regarding various news reports and published commentaries. He was a voracious reader of books too. Occasionally, he asked me to send him copies of rare books that mostly had gone out of print in Kenya but were still available abroad, books about philosophy, politics and human relations. Mzee Omolo Awange read all my published books, newspapers, commentaries and closely followed all my social media engagements. He was a political, social and economic connoisseur. An organic intellectual,” wrote Miguna.

Prof Stephen Kiama, the man who is running the University of Nairobi on orders of the Labour Court, is unable to access his office.

In a memo to staff and students, the vice chancellor— whose appointment was suspended by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha— on Wednesday said he had been forced to operate from a temporary office.

He claimed Prof Isaac Mbeche, who had been appointed by Prof Magoha acting VC, had refused to surrender the keys for the top office located on Floor 3 of UoN Towers.

“As an interim measure and to respect and safeguard university property from wanton destruction, the vice chancellor will operate from the 19th floor of the UoN Towers,” said Prof Kiama

His decision, he said, was aimed at upholding the image of the university as an organisation with strong corporate culture and belief in the rule of law.

ANNUAL LEAVE

On Tuesday, in a communication to staff and students, Prof Kiama said Prof Mbeche who is deputy vice chancellor in charge of finance, planning and development was proceeding on annual leave with effect from January 6 following his request and which had been granted.

He appointed Prof Madara Ogot, the deputy vice-chancellor-Research and extension, to act in the position for the period Prof Mbeche will be on leave.

“Further, Prof Julius Ogeng’o, the deputy vice chancellor academic affairs, was appointed in acting capacity as deputy VC student affairs to allow for the filling of the position,” said Prof Kiama.
He said both Prof Ogot and Prof Ogeng’o were formally appointed.

However, Prof Mbeche dismissed the claims saying he was recalled by Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha to act.

“I was on leave but was asked to come back,” said Prof Mbeche, who also disclosed that he stayed away from the VC office to allow the court process to take place.

“We are waiting for the decision of the government after Monday’s Court orders for the next cause of action,” said Prof Mbeche.

On Wednesday, UoN staff and students were holding separate meeting to discuss the stalemate of the university.

Some staff and students are supporting Prof Kiama while others are supporting Prof Mbeche.

Kenya has been drawn in Group E of the Qatar 2022 World Cup alongside Rwanda, Uganda and Mali and Harambee Stars coach Francis Kimanzi is optimistic the team can sail through.

Kimanzi says the draw is fair but expects tough matches from the opponents.

“Uganda and Mali were in AFCON 2019 and that tells you they are quality sides. Rwanda has been on the upward trajectory and therefore we cannot afford to underrate them. It is a fair draw and I believe if we prepare well we can pull through,” Kimanzi says

The tactician is also happy with the fact that the team will not have to travel long distance for the matches.

“Rwanda and Uganda are our neighbors and that makes planning easier. We have the basic core of the team intact and we will now kick off the preparations in earnest,” he added

The group matches kick off in October and Kimanzi reveals the team has a number of international friendlies lined up before then.

Govt announces fresh crackdown on matatus with TV screens

Operators of Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) screening any content will be punished, the government has said.

Kenya Film Classification Board(KFCB) coast branch says this year they have not licensed any PSV including long distance shuttle and buses to screen any content.

KFCB coast regional manager Bonventure Kioko said they were aware that some matatus and long distance buses and shuttles have mounted screens and are screening content which hasn’t been examined, which is against the law.

Mr Kioko added that they will work closely with police officers to ensure deviant PSVs operators are brought to book.

“The traffic police should demand to be served with screening permits by the Sacco’s and drivers of those vehicles. Remember government institutions complement each other and we work closely with the police to enforce these laws,” Mr Kioko said.

EXPLICIT CONTENT

Mr Kioko added that they have received complaints from the members of public that some matatus which are students’ favourites expose them to explicit content.

He added that protecting children against exposure to any harmful content was one of their main mandates.

“I wish to call on members of the public to bring the matter to our attention the moment they suspect that such is happening. Let them share with us the number plate of the matatu and the route,” he added.

Matatu Owners Association (MoA) Coast region co-ordinator, Salim Mbarak urged their members to pull down all the screens.

Mr Mbarak said traffic police should take action against all PSVs with screens.

“We are against where PSVs have screens that display dirty videos. That is totally wrong and it is against our religions and African cultures. Even, the traffic laws do not allow screens to be mounted on the public vehicles and the police should remove them,” Mr Mbarak said.

In 2018, KFCB banned screens in PSVs after some vehicles plying Mtwapa route in Kilifi were impounded for playing pornographic music content to passengers on board.

The drivers were warned against playing pornographic contents to passengers.

UK to abolish travel advisories to Kenya – State House

Britain has promised to abolish travel advisories that it has been imposing on Kenya over the years, State House has said.

A dispatch from State House said the promise was made on Tuesday by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson when he met with President Uhuru Kenyatta in London.

President Kenyatta and the British PM, the statement added, also discussed the effects of travel advisories when the PM assured that they would be abolished as they have a negative effect on the economy.

“What happens when these travel advisories are issued is that there are job losses especially in the tourism sector presenting an opportunity for radicalisation of our young people,” Mr Kenyatta said.

BRUNT OF TERRORISM

Prime Minister Johnson acknowledged that Kenya has borne the brunt of terrorism and there was need to join forces to curb the menace, it added. The UK has issued no statement on the same.

The UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office is legally mandated to keep Britons safe while travelling abroad and travel advisories are one of the tools they employ to deliver on that mandate.

Last week, the UK issued a travel advisory for its citizens traveling to Kenya, following the recent Manda Bay attack that left three US nationals dead.

The advisory, through the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), asks UK citizens to avoid certain areas of the country if at all possible, mainly those along the Somalia border.

The British government advised its citizens to be vigilant when visiting areas frequented by foreigners including hotels, sporting events, shopping centres, coastal areas including beaches, and transport hubs.

A week earlier, suspected Al Shabaab militants attacked a military base in Manda Bay leaving one US service member and two Department of Defense contractors dead.

No Kenyans died in the attack, according to the government.

The President was accompanied to the meeting by Cabinet Secretaries Ukur Yatani, Monica Juma and Adan Mohammed as well as Kenya’s High Commissioner to the UK Manoah Esipisu.

Blogger Nyakundi to be charged on Friday with Sh17.5m extortion

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday said that blogger Cyprian Nyakundi and his accomplice Emmanuel Nyamweya Ong’era will appear in court on Friday, January 24, to face charges of extortion contrary to section 300 (1) of the Penal Code.

The two were arrested by police on allegations of extortion, blackmail and false accusations on Monday, at Westgate Mall in Nairobi following a successful probe.

They were arrested after allegedly receiving Sh1 million from one of their victims as down payment for Sh17.5 million they had demanded from Victoria Commercial Bank before pulling down libelous stories from their website.

The directorate said Sh1 million exhibit money was recovered.

The local bank at the centre of the defamation row has hired a top British law firm currently representing Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle to tackle the case against British tabloid newspaper Mail on Sunday after it published a private letter she wrote to her father last year.

REPUTATION MANAGEMENT

In a statement published in local dailies, Victoria Commercial Bank (VCB) says it has enlisted the services of London-based Schillings, renowned for reputation management and defamation issues, in its case against Nyakundi.

The move by VCB underlines the seriousness with which the lender’s management is handling the defamation case against Nyakundi and his counterpart Ong’era as the bank fights to guard its reputation.

In its statement, VCB says it initiated further legal action against the controversial blogger after its plea to have him remove or delete the defamatory posts bore no fruit.

The blogger is not new to controversy.

DEROGATORY REMARKS

In April 2018, Mr Nyakundi was charged in Kiambu with posting derogatory remarks online against Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Nairobi’s Mike Sonko and the then Kenya Power Managing Director Ken Tarus.

He denied the charges and was freed on a Sh200,000 bond or Sh100,000 cash bail for each alleged offence.

At the time, Nyakundi was also charged with posting hate speech content against the Kikuyu community on social media.

He denied the accusation and was freed on a Sh2 million bond or Sh1 million cash bail.

In 2015, Safaricom bosses, Bob Collymore and Michael Joseph, sued the blogger for publishing defamatory information about them.

The two obtained a court order that barred the blogger from publishing any such content pending determination of their case.

If found guilty of extortion or gaining anything from any person, Nyakundi and his accomplice will be liable to imprisonment for fourteen years; and in any other case the offender is liable to imprisonment for three years.

Saudi Crown Prince accused of hacking Jeff Bezos’s phone

The Saudi embassy in Washington on Tuesday dismissed suggestions the kingdom hacked the phone of Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos, as media reports linked the security breach to a WhatsApp message from an account of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The 2018 intrusion into the device led to the release of intimate images of Amazon founder Bezos, whose Post newspaper employed as a contributing columnist Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist murdered later that same year at Riyadh’s consulate in Istanbul.

“Recent media reports that suggest the Kingdom is behind a hacking of Mr Jeff Bezos’ phone are absurd,” the Saudi Arabian embassy said on its Twitter account.

“We call for an investigation on these claims so that we can have all the facts out.”

Late Tuesday, The Washington Post reported that a United Nations investigation will report on Wednesday that Bezos’s cell phone was hacked after he got the WhatsApp message from an account purportedly belonging to Prince Mohammed, the kingdom’s de facto ruler.

EXTRACTED

Soon after the message was sent, a massive amount of data was extracted from Bezos’s phone, the Post said investigators concluded.

The Guardian earlier reported that the encrypted message from the number used by Prince Mohammed is believed to have included a malicious file that infiltrated Bezos’s phone, according to a digital forensic analysis.

The two men were having a seemingly friendly WhatsApp exchange when the unsolicited file was sent, according to sources cited by The Guardian.

Bezos hired Gavin de Becker & Associates to find out how his intimate text messages and photos made their way into the hands of the National Enquirer, which reported on the Amazon chief’s extramarital affair, leading to his divorce.

In March last year de Becker said he concluded that Saudi Arabian authorities hacked the Amazon chief’s phone to access his personal data.

PRIVATE

“Our investigators and several experts concluded with high confidence that the Saudis had access to Bezos’ phone, and gained private information,” de Becker wrote on The Daily Beast website at the time.

But de Becker did not specify which part of the Saudi government he was blaming for the hack, and gave few details about the investigation that led him to the conclusion that the kingdom was responsible.

In December a Saudi court exhonerated Prince Mohammed’s top aides over the murder of Khashoggi, a verdict condemned globally as a travesty of justice but backed by Washington.

Both the CIA and United Nations special envoy Agnes Callamard have directly linked Prince Mohammed to the killing, a charge the kingdom vehemently denies.

The officer said he had felt disturbed within by conscience since the case against Sonko was filed.

He explained that his religious doctrines do not allow him to keep grudges saying the decision was out of his own volition and nobody coerced him.

FORGIVE HIM

He said he reached the decision after pondering for long stating that he had no ill feelings against the governor.

Kenya’s first Attorney General Charles Mugane Njonjo is today (Wednesday) celebrating his 100th birthday.

The only surviving member of the country’s first independence Cabinet was born on January 23, 1920 in Kiambu.

The “Duke of Kabeteshire” says his family is what he considers as his greatest blessing and treasure.

“On this occasion I am humbled by what I consider to be my greatest blessings: my loving family, which, as expected, has grown over the years,” he says.

While confirming receiving numerous messages of congratulations and best wishes for his milestone birthday, Mr Njonjo upholds his family as the source of his energy and love for life.

“First of all my wonderful wife and life companion, Margaret, followed by our children. I have also had great joy and privilege of grandchildren, to date six of them, all of whom have had the most uplifting effect on my energy and love for life. I am truly grateful to God,” he notes.

As he turns a century old, the father of three and two son-in-laws says among the things he treasures is his long service to the country, church, people and civil service.

He also treasures his service to the people of Kikuyu – now Kabete Constituency – whom he represented in Parliament, his service in the private sector through various boards he was involved with, as well as the All Saints Cathedral.

“I have also dedicated many hours to numerous charities, social enterprises and educational institutions such as the Alliance High School, the Kenya High School and Starehe Boys Centre,” he states.

He schooled at Alliance, which was the only high school open to Africans in those days.

In all those endeavours, Mr Njonjo says, he is honoured and proud to have interacted and worked alongside many talented and gifted people.

Guinness World Records has put the record straight and clarified that Ugandan opposition politician, Kizza Besigye, is not the most arrested man in the world.

On Wednesday, there were reports that Guinness World Records had recognized Besigye as the most arrested man in the world after his Monday arrest.

Guinness World Records made the clarification after Nairobi News Editor sought to establish if the same is true.

“This is not correct. It does seem to have been very widely misreported,” Guinness World Records responded.

According to the online media reports, they had indicated that Mr Besigye had entered the annals of the world’s most arrested individuals on Monday when the police took him away and detained him at the Nalufenya Police Station in the eastern town of Jinja.

It was reported that Besigye was preparing to address rally of FDC supporters at the Bugembe Stadium in the town when he was whisked away before being freed a few hours later.

It has also been reported that 30 percent of Besigye’s arrests took place in Uganda’s election year in 2016 when he was detained over 15 times.

Besigye, a physician by profession, is a retired military officer of the Uganda People’s Defence Force. He worked with President Yoweri Museveni for several years before they fell out.

He formed the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party in 2000 and has ran for the presidency four times but failed to beat Museveni who has led Uganda since 1986.

The Guinness World Records is a reference book published annually, listing world records both of human achievements and the extremes of the natural world.

Leaked online chat reveals how private hospitals have been exploiting patients

Private health facilities are on spot yet again following a public uproar over how they have made healthcare a money-minting enterprise.

A leaked conversation on Twitter by a user with the @Owaahh shows hospital bosses set daily targets for the number of patients who should be admitted.

With these targets, doctors will admit patients who do not necessarily require to be admitted.

The conversation seems to be between medics at Nairobi Women’s Hospital Nakuru branch.

According to a Twitter thread, patients gave detailed accounts of over-billing, unnecessary procedures and admissions.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council on Wednesday said it was investigating complaints on social media about over-billing.

It further urged affected members of the public to file complaints.

During an interview with NTV, Dr Daniel Yumbya, the CEO, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board said he has written a letter to Nairobi Women Hospital, giving them three days to give a report of the accusations to the council.

“People are saying they have been told to go out and look for more patients – detain these patients. That is something we need to investigate. As soon as the hospital responds, I’m double sure the council will make a decision of visiting and evaluating beginning a particular period,” Dr Yumbya told NTV.

He also urged the public to give them a case they can investigate.

The Nairobi Women’s Hospital Nakuru branch did not respond to queries from NTV and instead directed them to the headquarters in Nairobi.
