Kisii Central Ward ODM candidate Frank Mirina has allegedly been kidnapped while on his way to the county tallying centre to complain about electoral malpractices.

The candidate was heading to the county tallying centre when he was abducted by unknown people a few metres from the Kisii National Polytechnic’s main gate.

Rachel Kebwato, a hawker who witnessed the 12:30pm incident, said a Probox vehicle first rammed into the candidate and his boda boda rider before the abduction occurred.

“I was selling my sweets and biscuits when I saw a Probox ram into the motorbike carrying the candidate. As the bike slowed down and parked at the roadside, three men jumped out of the car and grabbed Mr Mirina, forcing him into the car,” said Ms Kebwato.

The vehicle then sped off along the Kisii-Nyamira Highway.

MALPRACTICES

A supporter, Mr Amos Onsase, said the candidate was going to complain about electoral malpractices at the county tallying centre.

“We were dissatisfied with the electoral process in our ward and Mr Mirina was going to launch a formal complaint when he was accosted,” said Mr Onsase.

He told the Nation the candidate was unaccompanied at the time of the incident.

He added that witnesses called him with the news of the abduction, prompting him to rush to make a report at Kisii Central Police station.

Mr Onsase claimed powerful political forces were behind the youthful politician’s kidnapping.

“We know some powerful forces are behind this cowardly act and wish to reiterate our resolve to ensure that our leader becomes duly elected as Kisii Central Ward MCA,” he said.

DISAPPEARANCE

Tallying of votes for the county assembly representative seat is going on but Mr Mirina at the time of his disappearance was at position two.

The candidate’s supporters later staged a demonstration in the streets of Kisii Town to protest the kidnapping, which they termed as “an attempt to rig the election in favour of some powerful individuals”.

County Police Commander Abdi Hassan confirmed the incident, saying police had opened investigations in a bid to net the culprits.

“We are investigating the circumstances under which this incident occurred and will take legal action against all found culpable,” said Mr Abdi.

“It is too early for us to speculate on the identity or motive of the suspects behind the incident. Give us time to complete our investigation before we can comprehensively brief you on the matter,” he said.

A 23-year-old independent candidate is poised to be the next Igembe South MP after preliminary results indicated he was leading.

By 6pm Wednesday, John Paul Mwirigi, a Bachelor of Education student at Mt Kenya University was leading with 19, 366 against Jubilees Rufus Miriti who had 15, 977 votes.

Throughout the day, his supporters thronged the streets of Maua town in early celebrations while expectant voters camped at the entrance of the constituency tallying centre waiting for announcement of results.

Speaking to Nation, Mr Mwirigi said he expressed interest in politics while in form three at Kirindine Day Secondary School.

“I had a dream where I was tabling a motion in Parliament while I was in form three. That is when I started asking my fellow students to start campaigning for me since I would need their vote in 2017. I have held leadership positions in school and in my neighborhood,” said Mr Mwirigi, who was wearing a shirt with a worn out collar.

OTHER CANDIDATES

He says he has been campaigning on foot by visiting homesteads before he received support from boda boda riders.

If elected, Mr Mwirigi says his first agenda would be supporting agribusiness activities, promoting entrepreneurship and nurturing talents.

“Since I come from a humble background, I understand the issues that affect the residents. My key agenda will be transforming the lives of the people,” said the youthful candidate.

The sixth born in a family of eight says he still lives in a ‘granary’ (a raised house) and does not own land contrary to claims that he had sold his land for campaigns.

Other candidates in the race include Martin Kubai (MCC – 6,477 votes), former deputy governor Raphael Muriungi (DP – 2,202 votes) and Mithika Mwenda (PNU – 5,140 votes).

Bomet senatorial aspirant Nick Salat popular for the Ndaani ndaani ndaaaniii phrase has lost his bid with over 30,000 votes.

Salat, who was vying on a Kanu ticket, had garnered 100,664 votes by Wednesday 7pm against Jubilee Party’s Christopher Andrew Langat who was leading with 138, 198 votes.

The tallying in the county was 99.45 per cent complete by Wednesday 7pm.

In January, Salat joined opposition leaders in the unveiling of the Nasa coalition stating that Kanu had joined the opposition.

His remarks were however disowned by the party through its national executive council member Zipporah Kittony who termed them as personal and stated that the party has to discuss such decisions in the supreme party organ, National Delegates Conference.

Salat became popular after his Ndaani ndaani ndaaaniii phrase illustrating that he was backing the opposition coalition.

The phrase was then often used by the Nasa co-principals during their rallies across the country.

Nairobi woman representative Rachel Shebesh of the Jubilee Party has conceded losing the seat to ODM’s Esther Passaris.

In a press conference in Nairobi on Wednesday evening, Shebesh also congratulated Passaris for her victory.

She went on to thank Nairobi residents for allowing her to be the county’s first woman representative.

“I want to start by congratulating my competitor Esther Passaris for winning the seat of women rep for Nairobi County. I also want to say that we did our campaigns with a lot of respect for one another and decorum and it is for that reason that it makes my heart much lighter to be able to speak to her now,” she said.

Shebesh said Passaris was aware of the projects she started as woman representative and said she was confident Passaris will ensure the projects are completed so as to change lives.

The woman representative went on to congratulate President Uhuru Kenyatta, Governor Mike Sonko and Senator Johnson Sakaja who are all expected to win in their respective races.

Shebesh went on to urge other losers – particularly the Nasa leadership – to accept defeat as in every election there are winners and losers.

Here are some of the reactions to Shebesh’s concession speech:

Two dead as post-election violence hits pockets of the country

Youths in Kibera protest and barricade roads using bonfires on August 9, 2017 to dispute the results of the presidential election. PHOTO | JEFF ANGOTE

Violent protests erupted in different parts of the country as results for the elections were announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Reports from youths in Nairobi’s Mathare area  indicated that two people were shot dead when protests erupted after Nasa presidential candidate Raila Odinga claimed that Jubilee Party had rigged the elections in favour of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

AREA 4A

Police sources said the two were shot in the slum’s Area 4A.

Youths had barricaded a section of Juja Road with burning tyres and rocks immediately Mr Odinga finished addressing the press with claims that the IEBC website had been hacked and results manipulated.

In an earlier press conference, Mr Odinga had said Nasa would not accept the outcome of the elections which he termed as “sham, fictitious and fake”.

The provisional results by that time had shown that Mr Kenyatta had garnered nearly a million votes more than Mr Odinga.

But Mr Odinga said the results were the “work of a computer” and did not reflect the will of voters.

FORM 34S

He then asked the IEBC to provide forms 34A and 34B to help verify the outcome of the elections.

The youth in Mathare said they would not let anyone manipulate the results of the elections when they spent the whole day in long queues to elect their leaders.

“It is very unfair and we are urging the IEBC to only announce the correct results. If they know something went wrong, then they should tell us so that we can repeat. We will not accept anything other than actual and accurate results,” a youth in the slum said.

Mr Odinga had claimed that someone used the identity of an IT manager killed last week to log into the IEBC website and manipulate the results.

Some residents, however, alleged that those who were engaging the police in running battles were thugs who always look for an opportunity to break into homes and loot supermarkets and shops.

LOOTERS

“They have always started protests so as to get the opportunity to steal and also attack people they have grudges with. They usually protest about everything,” one of the residents, Edwin Magara, said.

Administration Police officers dispersed the youths by lobbing teargas canisters at them, but the youths kept regrouping and erecting barriers on the roads.

They also stopped vehicles, including matatus, from using the road and demanded that they pay some money before they are allowed.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati in response to Mr Odinga’s accusations said all the Form 34As would be made available for public viewing on the commission’s website.

However, he said the commission would investigate Mr Odinga’s allegations, but said he could not confirm whether the commission’s website had been hacked or not.

DAGORETTI

The opposition leader’s allegations came even as local and international observers, including former South African President Thabo Mbeki, lauded the election process and said IEBC had been transparent.

Other parts of the country also experienced violence.

Tallying of votes for Dagoretti North Constituency were suspended in the evening after violence broke out at Kilimani Primary School, the constituency tallying centre.

A presiding officer, Mr Hudson Maragia, and an agent of one of the candidates, George Ntongai, were seriously injured as Mr Simba Arati’s supporters stormed the centre.

The supporters alleged that the two were found with fake ballot papers and other election materials.

TENSION

Tension was high at the tallying centre as they threatened to attack the IEBC officials, forcing the returning officer, Mr James Maina, to halt the exercise, saying the security of his officers was at risk.

Trouble started after ballot boxes from Gatina polling centre arrived at the tallying centre while open.

Mr Arati, who was leading at the time, blamed the returning officer for the chaos.

He added that presiding officers were arriving at the tallying centre with the ballot papers but not accompanied by the police as required.

The agents of Amani National Congress candidate Bernard Shilibwa also blamed the IEBC officials, saying they left voters to use fake papers to cast their votes.

CALM

“Gatina is among our strongholds but the boxes have been brought in already opened,” said Hellen Ayuma Daudi, who was Shilibwa’s agent at Kilimani Primary.

Papers were strewn all over the compound as police tried to calm the situation.

Mr Arati also pleaded with his supporters to calm down and wait patiently for the results.

Mr Maragia sustained a broken jaw and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

He said Mr Arati’s supporters pounced on him, while accusing him of stuffing ballot papers in the boxes, in favour of Jubilee candidate Beatrice Elachi.

14 HOPEFULS

Mr Maina told the Nation that after the chaos, some of his officers ran away and he was trying to reach them on phone, so that the exercise could resume.

“As at now I don’t know where many of them are. I am here alone and the job is huge. I am managing although at a  very slow pace,” he said.

By the time the chaos erupted, Mr Arati (ODM) was leading with 48,349 followed by Beatrice Elachi (33,425) while Shilibwa was third with 16,814 votes.

Fourteen people are fighting for the area Parliamentary seat.

Jubilee Party’s Nixon Korir is the new Lang’ata MP after beating 16 other candidates in the parliamentary race.

Mr Korir was declared winner in the hotly contested seat following tension and unrest in the tallying centre at Multimedia University.

Security had to be beefed up since Wednesday. Mr Korir garnered 41086 votes.

ODM party agents had threatened to disruption the announcement saying they are disputing the results.

Heavily armed security officers, who were called in calmed the situation and then the results were announced.

The ODM candidate Oscar Omoke got 39, 593 votes.

Whilst the MP seat has been won by Jubilee, majority of the presidential votes in Lang’ata went to National Super Alliance flag bearer Raila Odinga.

Mr Odinga served as MP for the larger Lang’ata constituency or 20 years. The constituency was split into two, Kibra and Lang’ata.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had the last laugh in Kitutu Masaba when his political nemesis and ODM treasurer Timothy Bosire lost to Jubilee candidate Shedrack Mose.

Mr Mose polled 33, 386 against Mr Bosire’s 19,262 votes to clinch the victory in the results released by the constituency returning officer Robert Ng’eny at Nyambaria High school.

Victor Swanya Ogeto of Wiper was third while E Obwocha (Ford-K) got 3896 votes in a race that attracted eight candidates.

Others were Mose Kengere of Kenya Social Congress (1, 269), John Nyaigoti of Kanu (251), T. Momanyi of UDP (166) and J Moreka of MGPK (159).

Mr Bosire shot to public fame in April 2016 when he defied President Kenyatta’s request to parliamentarians to stand in honour of fallen KDF soldiers in the El Adde attack.

The head of state singled him out telling him that they were honouring soldiers “who also protect you”.

WITHDREW SECURITY

Later, the government withdrew the MP’s security and reinstated after a court order.

Mr Bosire later said: “I was reluctant to stand during the address as I was showing my displeasure in the manner the KDF deployment to Somalia has been handled. We have never known how many soldiers died. I have attended the burials of more than nine soldiers who were very young.”

Meanwhile, in Laikipia North Constituency, nominated MP Sarah Paulata Korere edged out another Kenyatta nemesis, ODM’s Mathew Lempurkel.

Ms Korere edged out the controversial MP with a difference of 10 per cent of the votes cast.

She garnered 10,767 votes against the incumbent’s 7,686 votes.

Ms Korere was vying on a Jubilee ticket while Mr Lempurkel was the ODM candidate.

The arch-rivals once fought in the office of Interior Cabinet secretary.

President Kenyatta visited Laikipia North to campaign against Mr Lempurkel who is also facing charges relating to the invasion of ranches in Laikipia County.

The spread of fake news is a major concern for the hundreds of observers deployed in the country.

In a statement read on behalf of the Commonwealth observer group, it was noted that some of the ‘fake news’ being spread were inflammatory and could spark protests.

Both BBC and CNN has fallen victims of the fake news and the two media house had to dissociate themselves from it. The Chair of the Commonwealth Group, former Ghana President John Mahama noted that both Jubilee and Nasa had ‘attack bloggers’ who were churning out stories.

PROPAGANDA

“Twitter was also used extensively for propaganda by political groups as well as members of the public during the heated campaign,” he said.

Mr Mahama said Kenyans should note that Facebook (South Africa) has issued a press statement on ways to spot and identify fake news.

He said a study for GeoPoll during the election period found that most Kenyans trust social media as a source for election news.

There were over 400 observers who were deployed, before, during and after the election. Some teams have indicated that they will remain on the ground to continue to observe the post-election period.

OBSERVERS

The European Union election observation mission also noted that a high number of well-produced false news items distributed on social media, reportedly in part by political camps, attempted to delegitimise genuine stories about political rivals.

The results of the election have dealt a double blow to K24 TV anchor Mwanaisha Chidzuga after two people close to her lost their respective races.

IEBC chairman Wafula Chekukati will likely announce results of the presidential contest on Friday.

Mr Chebukati has told journalists that the commission expects all forms 34B from around the country by noon Friday.

“We have asked all our officers to send in the forms by 11 am tomorrow. Once we’re done with the validation, we will immediately tell kenyans who their next president is,” the chairman said.

The ongoing validation has returned few discrepancies with what has already been published in the commission’s portal giving Mr Kenyatta a huge lead over his main challenger Raila Odinga.

Mr Chebukati at the same time gave the exercise a clean bill of health saying it was overrally credible.

“Our preliminary report shows that hacking was attempted but didn’t not succeed,” he said.

He called on political leaders to avoid sentiments that can stoke tension among supporters.

The Nasa presidential candidate Raila Odinga has dismissed figures indicating President Kenyatta is poised for a resounding victory.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday received his first congratulatory message even before declared the winner of the presidential election by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)

The message was posted on Twitter by Burundi President Pierre Nkurunzinza who congratulated President Kenyatta for his “re-election”.

The 54-year-old Head of State added that President Kenyatta’s “re-election” is crucial in strengthening relations between Kenya and Burundi.

This declaration means the Burundi President is the first Head of State to formally congratulate President Kenyatta, even though it comes at a time the IEBC is yet to declare the winner of Kenya’s election and hand him a certificate.

APPLAUDED

On Thursday, IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba indicated the commission had received less than half of the declaration form 34B from the constituency level, and needed another 24 hours to complete the verification process of the results that had earlier been sent by text.

What’s more, even though the Kenyan polls have been widely applauded by the international observers, Nasa presidential candidate Raila Odinga has disputed the process, claiming it was rigged.

President Kenyatta is a long term close friend of Nkurunzinza who won himself a controversial third term in office in 2012, and also survived a coup attempt by senior military chiefs at the time.

Nasa presidential candidate Raila Odinga has in a presser by his coalition been declared the duly elected President of Kenya.

In the press conference, a statement read out by co-principal Musalia Mudavadi indicated that Mr Odinga was leading in the race with 8,041,726 votes against President Uhuru Kenyatta’s 7,755,428 votes.

The statement and a letter to IEBC further demanded that Mr Odinga and his running mate Mr Kalonzo Musyoka be declared winners.

“We have annexed the actual and complete data contained in the IEBC servers with the serial number and the screenshots obtained from the website before. We therefore demand that you stop forthwith the display of unverified and unauthenticated results,” read the letter from Nasa to IEBC in part.

CONFIDENTIAL SOURCE

The coalition refused to divulge the identity of their “confidential sources at IEBC” on the votes for each candidate.

Mudavadi while responding to queries on how the coalition obtained final results before the IEBC receives all forms 34As said:

“The results were based on the figures obtained up to this point in time… these are as good as being final, I can tell you that. IEBC will make its declaration but we are pointing out the facts that are before us.”

The co-principal added that the opposition had no problem with the forms that were signed by their agents but insisted that not all forms had arrived at the national tallying centre at the Bomas of Kenya.

TALLYING PROCESS

“By the way let me also just add that we have the data which also shows the number of people who turned out to vote and we shall also make that available,” said Mudavadi.

He added that in a meeting with observers they questioned if the observers had access to where actual tallying took place and that was only done after the opposition raised issues.

Mr Mudavadi reiterated that the opposition had no problem with the voting but the tallying process.

Asked what the opposition will do if the IEBC declaration expected Friday midday does not declare their candidate as winner he said, “The duty of IEBC remains their duty we can only respond to them after they have made their declaration.”
