Elachi: I am not fighting Sonko

Nairobi county assembly speaker Beatrice Elachi has denied reports that she is engaged in a fight over the running of the government with governor Mike Sonko.

Elachi said she had no personal differences with Sonko but pointed out that the governor does not like her because of her insistence on following the rule of law.

“I have no issue with him. In fact he has never come to me to say I want the Speaker to do this for me and I refused. I have protected him several times although he does not like me,” said Ms Elachi.

“I have my values and point out what is right or wrong and I will always tell him what is right according to the law and that is where we are not on the same page,” she added.

The two leaders are on opposite sides on the contentious Nairobi County Supplementary Appropriation Bill that allocated Sh15 billion to the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS).

The Bill was approved by the Assembly on April 2, but the city governor refused to assent to it and instead sent it back to the assembly with his reservations.

However, when MCAs rejected his reservations and the Speaker sent the original Bill back to him to apped his signature, but he still declined to sign it into law.

On the stalemate, Elachi said the Assembly is only trying to conduct its oversight role on both the NMS and the Sonko government and is not picking a war him.

She said the Bill was to realign the budget and allocate funds to the transferred functions as per the Deed of Transfer of functions and save money for services that can be delivered before the current financial year ends on June 30.

“We just gave money to NMS and the Governor as the former is an administrative arm that needs money to function. The House is trying to sanitise what the Executive has been doing wrong as they have been spending without raising a supplementary budget,” she said.

The speaker asked Sonko to respect the Assembly and forge a working relationship instead of acting like there is a war between the executive and the Assembly.

“We need each other and we do not need to fight. I wish we can sit down and solve all these problems so that we do not have same fights in the next budget,” added Ms Elachi.

Everton striker Moise Kean in trouble for hosting ‘wild’ lockdown party

Everton’s Italian forward Moise Kean is the latest prominent footballer to break lockdown rules in England.

And the Italian did it in style, by reportedly sending footage of himself partying at an apartment to a private Snapchat group.

The party was complete with female guests filmed giving lap dances and undertaking ‘other suggestive acts’.

The player cheekily captioned the video ‘quarantine clean’ with reports indicating that the party was absolutely ‘wild’.

His actions were a breach of the government’s guidelines for the current pandemic.

And Everton have termed the striker’s behaviour as ‘unacceptable’.

“Everton Football Club was appalled to learn of an incident in which a first-team player ignored government guidance and club policy in relation to the coronavirus crisis. The club has strongly expressed its disappointment to the player and made it clear that such actions are completely unacceptable,” the English Premier League club said in a statement.

The 20-year-old was signed by the English club for Sh3 billion last August and takes home a weekly salary of Sh11 million.

Kean’s troubles come a few weeks after Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish was caught flouting government lockdown rules when attending a late-night party at the flat of former teammate Ross McCormack.

A 30-year-old Covid-19 patient who was admitted at the Mbagathi Infectious Disease Unit in Nairobi on Saturday, attempted to commit suicide inside the isolation ward on Sunday.

The patient was brought in on Saturday evening and was informed he will be in the facility for the next 14 days which did not go well with him.

According to a police statement, the patient removed a florescent tube in his room, broke it and used it to slit his throat.

Medical personnel who were checking on the patients heard him struggle and rushed to his rescue. His injuries were attended to and he was counselled by specialists.

“We told him he is young and will recover. We informed him he was not the only one who is sick and that all shall be well,” part of the statement said.

Police were allowed to the scene after wearing protective gear.

ESCAPED

By Sunday, Kenya had confirmed 355 cases in the country with the patients being attended to in isolation centres in Nairobi, Mandera, Mombasa among other counties.

Nairobi and Mombasa account for the highest number of cases and tested samples in the country with 17,992 samples tested by Sunday.

The Ministry of Health recently admitted that it was aware of the inconvenience of those quarantined, but maintains the practice is being done in the interest of protecting the public as some of those quarantined have tested positive for Covid-19, the respiratory illness caused by coronavirus.

Last week, an unknown number of people escaped from a quarantine facility at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) headquarters in Nairobi under unclear circumstances.

Various groups have complained that the conditions at some centres are defeating all the intentions of the government in controlling the spread of the coronavirus.

A group calling itself the Kenya Young Football Fans Caucus has launched a petition to world football governing body Fifa to dissolve the current Football Kenya Federation (FKF) regime and form an interim body to run Kenyan Football.

FKF elections have been stopped by the Sports Disputes Tribunal thrice now and it is still unclear when they will happen. This has left a vacuum that the group believes needs to be filled.

Below are the contents of the online petition on change.org

“Since 1964 when Isaac Lugonzo founded the Kenya Football Association, a whopping 15 chairmen later, Kenyan football still deals with the same problems; corruption, poor infrastructure, poor pay and absolute disorganization,” reads the introduction of the petition,

“The change we seek for as the Kenya Young Football Fans Caucus is as listed below,”

1. The same brains that brought us these problems cannot be the same ones to get us out of them.

2. The Government of Kenya must act fairly and in accordance with established rules and laws at all times in dealings with Football Kenya Federation and involve all stakeholders (local and abroad) in finding a solution to the current football impasse.

3. An interim committee to be set up by FIFA, CAF and the Government of Kenya to run football affairs for 90 days as well as set up a new and fair election code and board that shall give a fair chance to all interested in running the game of Football in Kenya.

4. FIFA, CAF and the Government to set up a financial kitty to help support our players in the top 3 leagues (men and women) in the face of the COVID-19 that has rendered football unplayable.

5. That the Kenya Young Football Fans Caucus be enjoined in the setting up and running of the proposed Interim Committee that shall administrate football for 90 days in Kenya.

Former FKF President Sam Nyamweya, former Vihiga Governor Moses Akaranga and immediate former Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye have expressed interest to unseat current federation boss Nick Mwendwa.

Sh50,000 for each family that lost a loved one in Elgeyo Marakwet landslides

Families that lost a loved one during the landslides and flash floods at the border of Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot Counties will each receive Sh50,000 from the government.

The government has set aside Sh1.7 million to be shared among the 35 households.

According to Rift Valley, Regional Commissioner George Natembeya, part of the amount will help offset burial expenses.

The national government has also promised to cater for DNA tests to help identify the bodies of the victims and locate them for their kin.

Natembeya, however, said 16 people were still unaccounted for a week after the incident displaced more than 4,000 people.

The search for the remaining bodies was called off due to heavy rains in the region.

Senate Majority Leader and Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen faulted the decision to call off.

The government has since urged Kenyans living in flood-prone areas to move to higher grounds to avert similar tragedies.

Woman who ‘died’ from deadly virus returns from the dead

The family of a 74-year-old woman who had been declared dead due to coronavirus has learnt that she is still alive and was just in a coma.

Alba Maruri, from Guayaquil in Ecuador, had been admitted to an intensive care unit on March 27, 2020 after she was suspected of having Covid-19.

CREMATED

Doctors had initially told the family that Mauri died on March 27 shortly after being admitted to a hospital in Guayaquil with a high fever and difficulty breathing, Ecuadorian daily El Comercio reported.

The family was shown a corpse at the hospital morgue, but they had to keep their distance due to fears the virus could spread, according to the BBC.

The body was later taken away and cremated at the family’s expense, and the family received the ashes about a week later.

But on Thursday, Ms Maruri regained consciousness and told the surprised doctors her name. She provided them with her home phone number and asked for her sister, Aura, to pick her up.

MISTAKEN IDENTITY

It’s then that the doctors realized the case of mistaken identity and informed her family.

On Friday, the family were shocked when health workers came to their home to tell them Ms Maruri was still alive and making a recovery.

“An ambulance arrived with a doctor, a psychiatrist and the social worker. They apologized, and they tell us, ”Your sister is alive’,  and we were in shock. It is a miracle of God what has happened,” Ms Maruri’s sister Aura told Reuters.

It has been reported that Maruri was unconscious for about three weeks, and curfew measures prevented her family from visiting her until Saturday.

Guayaquil is the hardest-hit city in Latin America, with 15,365 confirmed Covid-19 cases and 242 deaths so far.

Taita Taveta County Governor Granton Samboja made a big blunder while sending Ramadan message to Muslims who have commenced the holy month.

In a poster that was shared by KTN news Anchor Ali Manzu, Samboja used Arabic words which he wrongly translated in English to “Ramadan Kareem”, only that the words meant something else.

“If you don’t understand Arabic, ask. This is not the right message of #Ramadhan. Ndugu Governor Granton Samboja,” Manzu posted on Twitter.

The Arabic word Samboja used was ʾastaḡfirullāh which means “I ask forgiveness from Allah.”

The Governor’s post has since been edited with the right Arabic word for Ramadan Kareem and shared online.

Manzu has shared the corrected message and thanked the Governor for making the changes.

“Thanks, Granton Samboja, for making the changes,” Manzu tweeted.

Gospel musician Bahati on Sunday evening released a new track titled Mwisho wa Dunia just a a few days after he announced the closure of his EMB Record label due to differences with signed up artistes.

The new track was released under the same record label with audio by Mesesi and video by Infinity Clix.

The song is a dedication to the current Covid-19 pandemic facing the whole world.

The video was shot on the empty streets of Nairobi to depict the dusk-to-dawn that is currently in force countrywide.

In between, the video has been infused with clips of news broadcast of the pandemic from both local and international news channels.

CRITICISED

“Hakuna show hakuna hata dough, kuna haja gani nijenge hizi flow, when the fans wako lock nyumbani, mwananchi mfuko iko low, anarisk curfew ndio asake hata soo moja, serikali tuelewe jamani,” Bahati sings in the second verse intro.

Over the past few weeks Bahati has been on the headlines for a Tik Tok video that showed him wearing a dress.

For his antics Bahati has been the subject of sharp criticism from fellow artistes and fans alike.

Fellow gospel artiste Ringtone has gone as far as claiming that Bahati can neither sing nor does he respect God.

Bahati has also received a lot of flak for doing collabos with various gengetone artistes, including Boondocks Gang and The Kansoul.

His newly-released song however appears to have been well received by his fans.

“This is the type of music Bahati should be releasing. It fits you just like mama your first hit song,” @ashuraSanyu commented.

FANS’ REACTION

“Now this is what you were called to do stick to your melody… this is now the real you,” @SalomeNdeto wrote.

“I listened to this song on my hospital bed, I have shed tears. Mungu isiwe mwisho😭,” @pizzahmwitu said.

“This guy maybe criticized but that doesn’t stop him, this is how you know it’s not what people say it’s what God says. Keep going bahati,” @ckaykamau commented.

“Bahati you’re so creative not even a song but it’s a prayer inform of a song. GOODJOB!!!I LOVE IT,” @JoyceKariuki wrote.

Restaurants allowed to reopen, but no serving buffets

In a move that could signal the gradual return to normal life, the government on Monday ordered the reopening of restaurants in public places but under specific strict conditions.

In his daily brief to the nation on the status of the coronavirus, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe also allowed the sale of alcohol alongside meals in restaurants, although no buffets will be served.

But Kagwe maintained that an earlier order for the closure of bars and entertainment joints will remain in force.

“The National Emergency Response has approved the reopening of restaurants between 5am to 4pm each day. Diners must maintain a distance of four (each) per 10 square metres. Alcohol will only be served with a meal or at most 30 minutes after serving a meal. There shall be no self service or buffets. Restaurants should ensure the quality and safety food,” said Kagwe.

This decision could also bring a smile to the faces of thousands of Kenyans who have been earning a living in the catering industry.

Tanzanian singer Diamond Platnumz has finally spoken out about his breakup with his baby mama, Kenyan singer Tanasha Donna.

Diamond, during a radio interview at Wasafi, said that their breakup was amicable and it is not due to cheating claims.

The Jeje hit maker says that they both wanted different things in terms of the future of their family and since they could not agree, they decided to take a break and think things through.

“Lakini kiukweli mimi na Tanasha hatuko pamoja kwa sababu, kumekuwa na sababu ambazo zimekuwa nje ya uwezo wangu na uwezo wake yeye. So kiroho safi tukasema labda tunaweza patiana space,” said Diamond.

“So tukaongea kiustaarabu vizuri, kwa hivyo halihusishwi na kufumanyana. Kuna mtu aliandika ati… hajawahi kunifumania. Katika mausiano nilikuwa nimetulia sana. Lakini nilipoanzana na Tanasha ikawa ni ya kiukweli mambo yangu ya ujana nikaiweka mfukoni,” he added.

Tanasha, he says, converted to Islam while they were still together and he is happy that she made the choice.

“Wakati tulipokuwa Kigoma alibadilisha dini akawa Muislamu, namshukuru mwenyezi Mungu,” explained Diamond.

Tanasha and Diamond ended their one year relationship in February this year. They share a son together.

Facebook rolls out video calling product that holds up to 50 participants

Facebook is rolling out a suite of new products to expand its capabilities in video chat.

The company on Saturday announced Messenger Rooms, a tool for starting virtual hangouts with up to 50 people and allowing friends to drop in on you whenever they like.

It’s also doubling the capacity of video calls on WhatsApp from four people to eight, adding video calls to Facebook Dating, and adding new live-streaming features to both Facebook and Instagram.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the features in a live stream over the weekend saying that video presence was not a new area for the company.

“But it’s an area that we want to go deeper in, and it fits the overall theme, which is that we’re shifting more resources in the company to focus on private communication and private social platforms, rather than just the traditional broader ones. So this is a good mix: we’re building tools into Facebook and Instagram that are helping people find smaller groups of people to then go have more intimate connections with, and be able to have private sessions with,” Zuckerberg said.

The moves come as Covid-19 pandemic has forced hundreds of millions of people to stay indoors and rely on digital tools for nearly all of their work, school, and play.

More than 700 million people are now making calls on Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp every day.

FACEBOOK ACCOUNT

Unlike Zoom, other people can join a Messenger Rooms chat without a Facebook account, and there’s support for up to 50 participants.

And you can play around with virtual backgrounds too, Zoom-style.

Zoom was solely created for large corporations and not for social use.

Learning from Zoom’s mistakes that have led to a privacy backlash, Messenger Rooms is already prepared with more controls to avoid such errors.

Rooms include a locking feature that prevents anyone else from joining once a call begins, and admins can remove participants or report them if they believe they have violated Facebook’s community standards.

For participants, you can leave a room at your will.

All these changes are starting to roll out for users across the globe this week.

Keep an eye out for updates to Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp and you should have them before too long.

Comedian Daniel Ndambuki, better known by his stage name Churchill, has been the talk on Twitter following accusations that he does not pay comedians.

The accusations have been made by controversial blogger Robert Alai.

“Anyone who talks to Dan Ndambuki aka Churchill, tell him to pay the comedians. NTV has fully paid him, but because he lives a careless debt with poor financial management, comedians who provide him with content have not been paid since November 2019.” Alai tweeted.

To this Churchill has responded with a Bible verse (John 8:32).

“One day, you will know the truth, and the truth shall set you free,” Churchill tweeted.

His followers, however, asked the comedian to come out and explain the situation while others defended him.

“Tell us the real facts about the situation, or we take it as it is,” Julius Tesh posted.

“Churchill is a bigger platform that has exposed many comedians for good. It also comes with self-initiative to grow your career (Churchill is a runway for one to take off). Those complaining, I suppose, are slow to grow & white-collar mentality,” R.K. David commented.

“You are a public figure, and with such allegations, don’t you think the public needs to know?” Big Meech wrote.

“Issue detailed information on the same,” Generali Kiprotich said.

“I think you have already given them enough platform let them go out there and hustle,” Nyarkisii commented.

“Jana, these bullies were discussing who they will land on next after Bahati. kumbe it was to be Churchill. These streets aren’t safe anymore,” Cheruiyot_RK posted.

“Where are the rest of the comedians to ascertain the claims, Kila mtu aseme anadai ngapi ngapi tumalize hii maneno. Churchill bado ako maweng,” Rugeiya_Mek wrote.

Wanyama shares his early struggles to adapt in Europe

Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has revealed how he struggled to fit into the European way of playing football when he made his initial move from Kenya.

Wanyama moved to Swedish side Helsingborgs IF in 2007 and he says he found football there to be quite fast compared to what he was used to in Kenya.

“The pitches there are well-manicured – the players and ball moved way faster. I was used to bumpy pitches in Kenya and I had to adjust. Luckily enough, I moved there while I was still young and I got used to playing football the European way,” Wanyama said in an online video interview with Sports Marketer Bramwel Karamoja.

He also revealed how he enjoyed playing for the Scottish side Celtic FC.

“Celtic is more than a club – they are a family. They support their players in and out of football and you feel loved. I had a great time there, winning back-to-back titles and I will forever cherish the moments,” he said.

Wanyama moved to Canadian side Montreal Impact earlier this year from English Premier League (EPL) side Tottenham Hotspur, a decision he says he made for his happiness.

“I had a very bad knee injury during my last two seasons at Spurs but I really worked hard to overcome it. I was very patient and that is why I was disappointed when I could not get enough playtime even after recovering. If I don’t play I am not happy and that is why I had to force my way out – I was losing my happiness and had to go where I would play regularly,” he said.

Wanyama says he has settled and enjoying life in Montreal, as the city is “just like any other European city.”

Sonko rubbishes Tanga Tanga talk after visiting DP Ruto

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has lashed out those questioning his visit to Deputy President William Ruto.

In a post on his Facebook, Sonko further questioned why other leaders who have visited the DP have not been linked to the Tanga Tanga group.

“Kwani, being invited by the DP to his office is what you call Tanga Tanga? When Raila went with the DP at Tuju’s house, does that mean Raila is Tanga Tanga?” he posed.

“Two weeks ago Raila invited me to his Upper Hill office, and I went to see him, why didn’t you people say I had joined ODM? When the president meets with DP, is the president in Tanga Tanga?” he further questioned.

The embattled governor said he will attend to meeting with any other leader in the country.

SECRET MEETING

“If any leader, be it Kalonzo, Mudavadi, Wetangula, or even the DP and Raila again, invites me for a meeting, I will honor that invitation for the respect I have for all our leaders. We have democracy and freedom of association in Kenya… This frustration, humiliation, and embarrassment won’t last forever,” he stated.

The governor’s remarks came just days after details emerged about a secret meeting between him and DP Ruto that reportedly influenced his decision to terminate the Nairobi handover process.

Sonko had said he would move to court to challenge the transfer of crucial Nairobi County functions to the National Government as he had not read the draft well.

“To date, I have not been furnished with a copy of the deed. I was not given sufficient time even to read the draft,” Sonko stated at the time.

The Omtatah family said that they will channel the Sh 2 million which they received from well-wishers to help young people develop talent.

“Thank you for showing us that we are not alone in our grief. We are deeply touched by your words of condolence and are thankful for being there for us at this difficult time. Your prayers, thoughtfulness, generosity and support during this difficult time is greatly appreciated,” the bereaved father said.

The funeral was also attended by the wife of Busia County governor Mrs Judy Ojaamong and Ford Kenya party leader and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula.

Eliud Kipchoge struggling to train alone

Olympic marathon champion and world record holder, Eliud Kipchoge, has revealed he is struggling to train alone due to the government’s directive against public gatherings due to the spread of coronavirus.

Social distancing means Kipchoge has to train solo and not with his NN Running Team mates in Eldoret as he always does.

“You cannot run really in a strong way because you are alone. Physically I am training to make sure that I am fit but when you have the whole team then you can train to make sure that you are in the best-ever shape,” Kipchoge told Athletics Weekly.

“Mentally, you can get tired early because if you have an hour run and you’re running alone, then you can really get tired because of running alone, you are thinking alone. I have been with a team for the last 15 years and it’s really crazy for me. I can say it is not comfortable at all, but safety is my number one priority,” he added.

BEST EVER TIME

This weekend Kipchoge would have gone head-to-head with Ethiopian track and road race great Kenenisa Bekele at the London Marathon in what had been billed as a mouth-watering clash but the race has been postponed to October 19.

“I was coming to London as a defending champion and not really to run under two hours but I trust that it would have been a good race, an interesting one, but I don’t think it would have been under two hours. I think on Sunday if the London Marathon could have happened, we could actually have had the best race ever,” he said.

“Kenenisa has run 2:01:41 and I have run 2:01:39. It could have been the best-ever time and London could have been the best race ever between two people who have the fastest times in the marathon,” Kipchoge reckoned.

Kipchoge is optimistic and convinced that a competitive marathon can be won under two hours in the near future.

Kagwe not flattered by his new nickname ‘Waziri wa Corona’

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe may be the face of Kenya’s fight against coronavirus, but he is not particularly flattered by the nickname ‘Waziri wa Corona’.

Kagwe has been associated with the pandemic ever since the first coronavirus case was reported in Kenya on March 13, 2020.

He has been on the front line in updating the country on new cases and dissemination of government measures aimed at containing the pandemic.

But that said, Kagwe doesn’t understand why some people in the country, especially children, have taken to referring to him as ‘Waziri wa Corona’.

Speaking on Monday during inauguration of advisory committee on supply and utilisation of blood at Afya House, Kagwe said the coronavirus crisis has made people forget his ministry’s other roles.

“I hear now children are calling me ‘Waziri wa Corona’, they are forgetting the other roles of the ministry. It is good to clarify this is the Ministry of Health and not the ministry of coronavirus,” he said amid laughter from the committee members.

DAILY UPDATES

He said that the ministry was carrying out normal activities and must continue with other efforts to conclude reforms to be able to achieve their goals.

The CS took over administration at the ministry on February 28, 2020, two weeks before the country recorded her first case of coronavirus.

Since then, almost all updates on Covid-19 have been associated with him.

On other occasions, Health CAS Dr Mercy Mwangangi has held the fort for him and only recently, the other top health official Rashid Aman has also made media appearances at the briefings.

On Monday, Kenya’s Covid-19 cases raised to 363 after eight more people tested positive.

The country also has 114 recoveries and 14 have succumbed to the pandemic.

County officials under investigation for misusing Covid-19 funds

Officials from several counties are being investigated over alleged embezzlement of money allocated to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Among leads being pursued by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) are claims of overpricing of goods, procurement of substandard products, and award of supply tenders to relatives and cronies.

Counties have already allocated millions of shillings to not only tame the spread of the coronavirus that has already killed 14 people in Kenya and infected 355, but also to cushion Kenyans from the economic impact of the pandemic.

EACC boss Twalib Mbarak said the counties being investigated include Bungoma, where common jerrycans used for carrying water were bought at Sh10,000 each, Kilifi over the Health Ministry’s expenditure, and a county in North Eastern Kenya where the probe has just begun.

The EACC had informed the Council of Governors (CoG) that the agency was monitoring coronavirus expenses in their respective counties.

Sex and kissing ‘banned’ as Bundesliga set to resume

German based footballers could be banned from kissing or engaging in sex with their partners as part of the measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Reports indicate that Germany’s top flight football league, Bundesliga, could resume in May but the footballers and other staff could be forced to adhere to strict rules released by the league body DFL.

A document releases by the two bodies has also mapped out how the game can safely return amid the Coronavirus crisis, and how players will train and play matches as well as what happens if someone contracts the virus before the season is finished.

Players can live either in team hotels or at home but sex and kissing is banned if they or their partners show symptoms of the virus.

Stadiums will allow a maximum of 300 people at one time, including only four policemen, 10 journalists, four ball boys, eight groundsmen and 50 security staff.

Every team will be tested before their first training session, then twice a week until the end of the season, one of which is just before a match. Players should also stagger their arrival at training and text the hygiene officer to confirm they are clear of any symptoms.

Contact training will also be minimised with team meetings held in big rooms and only for compelling reasons, with players keeping two metres apart. No eating will be allowed in the kitchen and food must be taken away.

Also, players will be encouraged to shower and change at home and they must put their own kit and boots into the washing machine.
