Veteran photojournalist, John Barasa has been laid to rest at his home at Taito village, Sitatunga Ward in Trans Nzoia County.

Mr Barasa, who was until his death an employee of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), died on April 21,  at his home in Syokimau, Machakos after suffering a cardiac arrest.

In a low key burial ceremony due to government guidelines on the fight against the spread of the coronavirus, relatives and friends paid their last respects to a man described by many as generous.

Under the supervision of the local security team, the burial ceremony was conducted by pastor Baraka Simiyu of the Deliverance Church Kibomet.

The family described the late as a great pillar who made sure that his children received good education.

“My husband was very close to the family and ensured we got all we needed. Despite his busy schedule at work he always communicated with us,” said Mrs Mary Mumbi Barasa, his widow.

The late has left behind a widow, four sons and three daughters.

Barasa, an accomplished journalist with work experience spanning many years, joined the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication in 1979 before proceeding to Japan for further studies on JICA Scholarship.

Barasa worked with the Kenya Television Network KTN as a senior cameraman before joining SABC where he worked until his death.

Barasa has been eulogised by leaders and his colleagues as a bright journalist who loved work.

Deputy President William Ruto mourned the late as an exceptional and brilliant journalist.

“Barasa was a dedicated seeker of truth, a force with the unrivalled ability and a third eye for news. He was fearless, tireless, insightful and uncompromising. We will miss his humility, resilience and focus,” stated the Deputy president.

Others who mourned him; Sarah Kimani (SABC) Linus Kakai (Royal Media Services) among many.

Quarantine shopping: KRA now goes after online traders

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has directed businesses trading on digital platforms to remit VAT on all digital sales.

The Commissioner Domestic Taxes, Ms Elizabeth Meyo, said in a statement, that KRA had noted with concern that some digital business owners had failed to charge VAT as required by law.

“KRA wishes to inform such persons that they are obligated under the VAT Act, 2013 to charge and remit VAT all the sales made through their digital platforms and the commission charged to the vendors for the use of their digital platforms,” the statement read.

“All non-compliant traders are hereby advised to comply to avoid penalties and interests on outstanding taxes failure to which appropriate action will be taken in accordance to the law,” the Commissioner added.

“Where fraud will be detected, appropriate criminal proceedings shall be brought against the offenders,” she added.

This comes at a time when many Kenyans have turned to online shopping to keep social distance and minimize getting out of their homes as a way of reducing the risk of contracting or spreading coronavirus.

Last year, former Treasury Secretary Henry Rotich paved the way for KRA to start taxing revenue generated by electronic commerce in Kenya.

Sarah Serem: Africans sleeping on the streets in China are not Kenyans

Kenya’s ambassador to China, Sarah Serem, says that no Kenyan has been left on the streets in China and the pictures and videos circulating online might be of Africans from other countries.

Speaking to NTV on Friday night, the ambassador said that some of the pictures making rounds on social media are old, and although some maybe current cases they were not Kenyans.

“I want to tell you I have also been seeing the same on social media and I am more concerned with my Kenyans so, I checked to see if any of my Kenyans are the ones appearing on social media and on the scripts we have seen going round,” Ambassador Serem said.

She added: “But we haven’t received one single case of Kenyan that have been in the streets, apparently some of those doing the rounds, some are old cases others may be fresh cases yes, but absolutely not the Kenyans.”

On the matter of the government evacuating Kenyans from China, she said that the matter was still under discussion and are yet to confirm on a date on which it would happen.

The delay is due to the fact that some Kenyans do not have travel papers and therefore preparations have to be done first.

However, Kenyans will still have to pay for the flight tickets.

“Majority of our diasporas are students, and these are students who are ongoing with classes. And so the majority of those who are legally here have absolutely no reason to go back home,” explained ambassador Serem.

She added: “There is a suggested date, but the fact of the matter is these are people who require a lot of preparations before they depart. We have communicated that information to Kenyans that are interested in going and we have been in touch with them since the issue of the virus came in. On when they will be able to come back depends on when everyone would have been able to get the necessary papers.”

Already the embassy has registered 171 Kenyans who are interested in returning home, out of which 112 have invalid papers.

Hopes dashed as KQ cancels SOS flight from London

Kenya Airways has cancelled a London-Nairobi flight that was meant to bring Kenyans home.

According to Kenyan High Commission in the United Kingdom, the national flag carrier cancelled the flight citing the strict rules on coronavirus in Kenya, which require that all arriving passengers must be Covid-19 free.

“Covid-19 tests in the UK are administered only to those who are sick and are admitted to the hospital. Passengers are, therefore, unable to take tests to prove that they do not have coronavirus. We continue to work to find a way that passengers can be tested before travel,” the Kenyan Embassy wrote.

KQ had requested all those interested in flying out of London into Kenya to take the Covid-19 test and present a copy of their medical results at the check-in counter.

Those flying from Kenya were required to undergo a mandatory Covid-19 test at Lancet Kenya within 72 hours of flight.

The Embassy asked Kenyans in the diaspora to remain where they are until the lockdown is lifted and air travel is allowed.

“We must emphasize that we have authority from cooperating governments to facilitate flights for only stranded passengers. We encourage other Kenyans in the diaspora to remain where they are until such a time when the lockdown is lifted, and air travel and air space is open,” the embassy added.

The flight was only open to Kenya citizens flying back home, and all passengers were to undergo a mandatory quarantine of 14-28 days at their own cost as per the government of Kenya guidelines.

However, KQ flew some 100 Britons from Kenya back to London on Thursday.

Kenya has recorded seven new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours, bringing the country’s tally to 343.

The new cases were announced on Saturday by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kenya’s death toll from the virus remains at 14.

According to the Head of State, the government has so far tested over 17,000 people so far and mass testing will continue.

He said that he was confident the country will be able to get the economy back to where it should be once we succeed in the fight against Covid-19.

“We extend our appreciation to the health and security personnel standing at the forefront of the war against the coronavirus pandemic. While we mourn the 14 who have succumbed, we celebrate the 98 recoveries we have seen so far,” he said.

The President warned that the government would not delay escalating the measures put in place if the need arises.

Some countries managed the pandemic but opened up without proper processes and are now suffering for that, he said.

“We will not delay in escalating the measures we have put in place if (the) need arises,” he added.

The president at the same time launched a National Hygiene Programme which will commence on Wednesday, April 29 and run for the next 30 days.

Counties like Kwale, Kilifi, Nairobi, Mombasa and Mandera have registered an increase in the number of reported cases.

More stringent measures will be taken in consultation with county governments to help contain the spread of Covid-19.

The Head of State also tasked security agencies with upgrading their alert and response measures on porous borders to prevent any security threats that could otherwise compromise the war on Covid-19.

Uhuru extends travel ban, curfew by 21 more days

President Uhuru Kenyatta has extended the dusk to dawn curfew and cessation of movements into and of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale counties for further 21 days.

The head of state said that the measures have helped the country avoid the projected number of infections where it had earlier been estimated that by the end of April there would be close to 10,000 coronavirus cases in the country.

“The National Security Council has sanctioned the following additional measures to protect lives and to protect our future: The cessation of movement into and out of Nairobi and the counties of Kilifi, Kwale and Mombasa that are currently enforced shall be extended for a further containment of 21 days,” President Kenyatta said.

He added: “That the nationwide dusk to dawn curfew that is currently enforced shall also be extended for a further 21 days. And to ensure that porous borders and security threats to do compromise our response to this pandemic the security services will upgrade their alert and response measures in every border area.”

President Kenyatta noted with concern the escalating numbers of infections in four counties, namely, Mandera, Kilifi, Kwale and Mombasa.

He warned that if the trend counties, more stringent measures will be effected in the mentioned counties.

“Additionally, the counties of Mandera, Kilifi, Kwale and Mombasa have registered through their governors an increase in cases of infections. And today we say if this worrying trend does not reverse more stringent measures will be taken,” President Kenyatta explained.

What you need to know about these dancing pallbearers

If you have been spending most of your time online especially social media, then by now you might have come across several video memes of dancing pallbearers with the coffin on their shoulders.

The lads are good if not the best at what they do; with the coffin on their shoulders the can drop on the floor on fours just to make a move, spin around and in some instances, throw the casket in the air.

And with the stay home situation due to the coronavirus pandemic, people have been killing boredom by creating interesting memes around the pallbearers.

However, there are several interesting things not known about these Ghanian pallbearers as was revealed by the group’s founder Benjamin Aidoo on NTV’s The Trend show hosted by Amina Abdi on Friday.

1. 18 Years in business

According to the founder Aidoo, they have been in business for close to two decades now. Aidoo says when the idea struck him, he quit his daytime job to concentrate on making it a reality.

“Having attended several funerals in Ghana this idea hit me. We shouldn’t feel sad for the dead but also celebrate them. I quit my job in 2003 to start this and found a few guys to do this,” Aidoo said.

To make it legal and official, Aidoo registered a company.

2. Has 100 employees

Whereas in the video memes only about five pallbearers are seen, Aidoo says his company has employed 100 people who help in executing several tasks including undertaking.

3. Has female Pallbearers

Not all the 100 employees, are male; there are a number of them who are female, some of whom also take part in the pallbearers’ send-off dances.
“Not all are men, I have employed women as well and it’s good I was able to give jobs to unemployed people as well and help put food on their table,” Aidoo notes.

4. They train for Choreography

One thing that fascinates many is how well the Ghanaian pallbearers execute the choreography with the casket on their shoulders.

The pull different acts and moves, dance around in synchronised steps and uniformity along with the casket. Aidoo said they practise a lot for the moves and dance.

“For the moves and the choreography just don’t come like that, we train every Tuesdays and Wednesday afternoon,” he said.

5. Dropping casket

The founder notes that since he started the business, despites how sometimes delicate the choreography and moves appear, he and his troupes have never dropped a single casket.

“For the 18 years in the business we have never dropped a casket. This is what we do, we train for this,” Aidoo notes.

6. Weddings
Well, if you thought they just do funerals, then you are wrong. With a 100 employees, Aidoo has a work force team that can do much more. They can offer a number of pallbearing services at ago, do undertaking activities and also handle weddings and decor.

The founder says some of the services they offer aren’t well known yet and as such they always advertise them through billboards.

7. Heavy investment on Outfits

Aidoo also notes that he invests heavily in their matching outfits for a more impressive visual effect, uniformity and professional look.

8. Overseas clients

Most of their clients are based in Ghana. However, with the new found fame and age of technology, Aidoo notes that they have increasingly been getting offers from other countries.

In such cases, the client is asked to pay for the air tickets of the pallbearers, accommodation, food and the performance fee.

9. Kenyan manager

Currently, the Ghanian pallbearers are managed by John Telewa popularly known as Kiss Bandit. Telewa, a communications consultant and content creator hit the headlines about six years ago when he attempted to break the Guiness World Record for having kissed the most women.

As of August 2014, Telewa claimed to have kissed 3,995 women among them famous celebrities’ media veteran Caroline Mutoko and singer Avril hence the nickname.

Classic 105 presenter Maina Kageni has revealed that his celebrity crush is singer Sanaipei Tande.

Maina made the revelation during a Q&A session on his YouTube page after one of his fans asked him who his celebrity crush was.

“Avril, I love you so much; you are a beautiful woman, but Sanaa, you are a sexy woman, and you sing like hell,” Maina gushed.

Maina went on to reveal that he had asked Sanaipei to have his baby.

This, according to Maina, happened when Sanaipei was his colleague at Kiss FM.

“I actually made an indecent proposal to her, I told her, I don’t want a relationship but have a baby for me. And she used to joke around the corridors, baba nani, mama nani when I told her I was dead serious. Coz, she just got all the genes you would want in a baby aki Sana aliundwa on a Sunday,” Maina added.

Another fan asked if he kissed her to which Maina responded: “Deep!”

Maina also confessed he believes in the institution of marriage but it’s probably not meant his ilk.

“Yes, I believe in the marriage institution but marriage is not for everyone,” he said.

Venture to produce free masks for slum dwellers kicks off

Thousands of poor residents in Mukuru slums in Nairobi stand to benefit as the Mukuru Promotion Center (MPC) recently began making face masks set to be distributed in slums in Nairobi.

The centre serves slum dwellers in Lunga Lunga, Mukuru Kaiyaba, Fuata Nyayo, Mariguini, Maasai Village, Mukuru Kwa Njenga, and other adjacent slums.

Sister Mary Killeen, who has been in charge of the centre for over three decades, says there is a need to think of the poor during this period the world is facing challenges due to the spread of the dreaded coronavirus.

“I have worked around the slums for very many years but I have never seen poverty affect the people in Mukuru as it has from last year. And it has gotten worse now due to the curfew meant to reduce the spread of Covid-19. Most of the people in the slums are small scall businessmen and women while others are casual labourers in the nearby companies in Industrial Area,” she said.

“Now they cannot work, others have already lost their jobs as the effect of the measures put down by the government trickles down. It is impossible to social distance in the slums and having them all enclosed in those areas without an income and food is very dangerous. Crime rates and diseases will increase and the government should think about it,” she added.

Mukuru Promotion Centre helps more than 8,000 children and adults every day by providing education, healthcare and social rehabilitation services. For more than 30 years, the centre has been part of the Mukuru community in the informal settlements of Nairobi and Sister Mercy says they had to come in during this pandemic and help.

“We serve more than 6,000 children in our different schools in the slums and our main vocational training centre and they all need the masks as they come from poor backgrounds and a mask is not a priority as their parents are even struggling to provide for them,” she said.

“Our priority, first of all, is to ensure that at least most of these kids, if not all and their parents have facemasks as it is crucial during this period. At the moment we only have two tailors making around 60 facemasks daily but we hope to recall a few more in the coming days to scale up the production.”

“The main challenge has been the materials for making the masks. It is quite expensive and we are currently looking for donors to support the project. If we can get that then we would even produce more and distribute for free in the slums – that is our intention. We have a clinic at our centre at the St Catherine Primary School that serves families in the adjacent slums in South B and we want to make Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) for the staff in there and other clinics in the slums in the near future,” she added.

Mukuru Promotion Centre (MPC) is a church-based charitable organisation domiciled in Nairobi, Kenya. It is situated along Likoni Road off Mombasa road, bordering Mukuru Kayaba slum on the far end. It was founded by Catholic Sisters of Mercy in 1985 to do charity and provide basic services in Mukuru slums.

Uhuru announces reopening of restaurants but…

The government is considering to allow selected restaurants and eateries to re-open and undertake minimal operations as a way of reviving the economy progressively.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, while speaking from State House on Saturday, said that his government is looking into ways to re-open the economy, albeit in a way that does not endanger lives.

“We will re-open our economy but we must do this in a way that does not endanger many thousands of lives,” President Kenyatta said.

“We are in the middle of a war, and the key for all of us to return to normal is keeping our infections rates low,” he added.

The Head of State said he has directed the National Response Emergency Committee to map out economic sectors in terms of which possess high infection risks.

“Indeed, I have directed the National Response Emergency Committee to map out the economic sectors and activities on the base of infection risks,” President Kenyatta said.

The restaurants will be selected according to those who have shown observing the highest levels of health regulations compliance.

They will, however, have to maintain measures that mitigate against the spread of coronavirus.

“The mapping exercise when combined will increase testing and more exact contact tracing. And this will inform how we re-open this economy progressively,”

“One immediate step from the work done so far is that we shall allow a few restaurants and eateries in selected counties that show the highest levels of health regulations compliance and the ability to arrange for employee testing to undertake minimal operations. While maintaining measures that mitigate against the spread of coronavirus,” President Kenyatta said.

He emphasised that every Kenyan has the responsibility of ensuring that the virus does not continue to spread rapidly so that things can go back to normal sooner.

In March, the Ministry of Health ordered for the closure of bars and other entertainment joints to be closed indefinitely due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Restaurants were instructed to only operate on takeaway services, which led to some of them closing their establishments.

Njambi Koikai remembers her news anchoring days at KBC TV

Media personality Njambi Koikai has shared some snippets of her time as a news anchor at the Kenya Broadcasting Cooperation (KBC) many years ago.

In a post on her Facebook page, Njambi also revealed how her family was happy to see her on TV and how she multi-tasked on both TV and radio.

FIRST ASSIGNMENT

“Over a decade ago, I joined KBC or Broadcasting House (BH) as we members call it. I joined as an intern from Daystar University to the Reporter’s Desk. There was a major strike at the City Council of Nairobi and I was sent to cover it as my first assignment. I failed terribly and my story never went on air. That crushed me. I decided TV was not my thing and I should move to intern on radio and that’s how I landed at the now-defunct Metro FM,” Njambi said.

“My mom and grandmother were not very happy with that decision. Their dream was to see me anchor the news. So one day, I was walking around the corridors and overheard someone say there will be screen tests for news anchors. I quickly went to the studios, got the info, and went for the screen test. That’s when I met Monica Kiragu who picked me to become a prime time news anchor and grew to senior news anchor. Monica believed in me even more than I did,” she recalled.

“I doubled my radio and TV shifts. I’d have a radio show from 8pm-1am, break at 9pm and leave the music running, read the news on TV and go back to the radio studio. My sister, mom, and grandmother loved it. They loved Njambi doing the news. My grandma died a happy woman. She bought me all the suits I wore on TV,” she reminisced.

TREATMENT ABROAD

Njambi says she remains eternally grateful to Monica Kiragu.

At this point, I’d still call Monica and inform her I was unwell. None of us knew I had Endometriosis. Monica never questioned me. She understood and was empathetic. She also challenged me a lot by starting a different news show on Sunday nights. I’m forever grateful to Monica,” she added.

Njambi also offered some advice for upcoming journalists.

“To all the upcoming journalists and news anchors, a lot has changed within our media space. My experience in media is to be as authentic and as real as you can be,” she said.

Njambi, who is also a renown reggae emcee, is currently on a break after returning to Kenya mid last year from the USA where he underwent treatment for endometriosis for over a year.

Why Kenyan Premier League season may now be cancelled

The 2019/2020 Kenyan Premier League season could be cancelled following a government directive to extend curfews in a bid to curb the spread of  coronavirus.

In his address to the nation on Saturday, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced an extension of the dusk to dawn curfew, plus another one banning the movement of people in and out of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale for a further 21 days.

Further, there already exists a separate order by Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed for the closure of all public sports facilities in the country.

Thus, the league’s chief executive Jack Oguda has told Goal.com that it is technically impossible to play football in the prevailing circumstances.

“Nothing will change because these decisions mean we cannot play football,” he explained.

The Kenyan Premier League was suspended in March with nine rounds of matches left and Gor Mahia leading the 18-team table.

The season was originally slated to end on May 18, but that now appears unlikely to happen.

“Our plans before this season kicked-off was to finish the league and start a new league by August but if the members decide to conclude this season, then the kick-off date for the new season will definitely be affected, and will be pushed forward,” Oguda said.

Most football leagues in the world have been halted as focus shifts to curbing the spread of coronavirus.

Elsewhere, the top-flight leagues in Belgium and Netherlands have been canceled over the coronavirus pandemic.

Here is Ruto’s biblical message to his political enemies

Deputy President William Ruto has sought inspiration from the Bible to send a message to his political enemies.

In recent times Ruto has been in(famous) for criss-crossing the country while attending several functions and donating millions of shillings.

Ruto’s countrywide tours have since been halted in the wake of a government ban on public gatherings including church functions aimed at curbing the spread of coronavirus.

Perhaps with this in mind, on Sunday the DP elected to share a number of bible verses with his 2.9 million followers.

“One thing have I asked of the LORD, that I will seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD, all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple,” he posted.

BIBLE VERSE

But it is the messaging in the next verses the DP posted that could be of great significance, considering the current political climate.

“Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not feat; though arise against me, yet I will be confident.”

“Pslam 27:1-4 Of David. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall.”

These messages come at a time the DP appears to have fallen out with his boss, President Uhuru Kenyatta, with media reports suggesting the Head of State could soon appoint Ruto’s political ‘enemies’ in the frame of opposition leader Raila Odinga and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi and his allies to the Cabinet.

Michelle Obama for US vice presidency?

Michelle Obama has been mooted as America’s next vice-president in a move that has elicited varied reactions.

Americans will head to the polls in November 2020 and Democratic presidential aspirant Joe Biden and his wife Jill have publicly backed Michelle for the role.

FINE WOMAN

Joe Biden, who was Barack Obama’s vice-president of eight years, recently opined he would pick Michelle as his running mate ‘in a heartbeat’.

“She’s brilliant. She knows the way around. She is really a fine woman. The Obamas are great friends,” Biden told a Pittsburgh outlet.

He added, however, that he didn’t think that the former First Lady was interested in the position. “I don’t think she has any desire to live near the White House again.”

“I’d love it if Michelle (Obama) would agree to it. But I think she’s had it with politics. I don’t know. She’s so good at everything she does. That would be wonderful,” Jill added in a another interview with CNN.

ADMIRED WOMEN

Top Obama advisors have similarly panned the idea that she was interested, while the former First Lady herself said in her memoir that she had ‘no intention of running for office ever’.

Despite her lack of interest, the usually reserved Michelle has polled very well. A Gallup poll from last year ranked her as the most ‘admired women’ for the second year in a row. Another poll last year found that Obama tied with the former vice president among Democratic voters asked about their choice of nominee.

Michelle Obama, 56, is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School. She has been married to Barack, America’s 44th President and son to a Kenyan man, since 1992.
