A 41-year-old man was killed by another man when they differed over a widow at Ndori village in Kothidha location, Homa Bay Sub County.

John Nyambok died after allegedly being attacked by Kennedy Abong’o over rivalry over a widow’s love. They confronted each other over who should inherit the widow who is said to have been secretly dating both of them.

Mr Nyambok and Mr Abong’o are said to have both inherited the widow following the death of her husband. However, none of them knew that the other was seeing the woman.

Drama started when they met at the widow’s house on Sunday.

BLUNT OBJECT

Witnesses reported that the men confronted each other after which Mr Abong’o hit the deceased with a blunt object leaving him unconscious. “He fled the scene when he saw his victim lying on the floor,” a witness said.

Mr Nyambok is said to have died after being discharged from Marindi Health Centre where he was rushed for treatment.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Esther Seroney said an irate mob, which learnt about the death of Mr Nyambok, carried his body to the suspect’s home to express their anger.

The mob also burnt down four houses within Mr Abong’o’s home in an act of revenge. “Two houses belong to his two wives, the other two houses are for his children. The family fled as the mob was baying for their blood,” Ms Seroney said.

The officer said a manhunt for the suspect has been launched. “The whereabouts of the man is not known neither is the location of his family,” Ms Seroney said.

The body of the deceased was taken to Homa Bay County referral hospital mortuary for postmortem.

A 23-year-old man who allegedly called his mother a stupid prostitute and threatened to kill her after she “took too long” to open a door for him was on Tuesday charged with creating disturbance.

Alex Kilungya was accused of threatening to beat up his mother Jackline Mumbua Muli at her house in Kaloleni Estate, Nairobi on October 21.

He had returned home at around 5:30am after Mashujaa Day merrymaking and his mother was still asleep. Kilungya is said to have banged the door calling his mother a stupid prostitute, and broke windows.

The suspect became more violent after his younger sister Ann Mutheu opened the door for him. He grabbed a Sufuria threatening to beat her up and their mother for not opening the door promptly after he knocked.

Kilungya is accused of threatening to kill them.

Muli called and reported the matter to Makongeni police station and three officers rushed to her house, and rescued her.

Kilungya denied the charges before magistrate Angelo Kithinji of Makandara law courts. He was released on a cash bail of Sh30, 000. The hearing of the case starts on February 27, next year.

Why Nairobi National Park is on its deathbed

$

Blood everywhere was all villagers of Kajiado North saw when they woke up one morning last year. Eric Tiampati will not forget that bloodbath. Sheep carcasses were strewn all over the village.

In total, 103 sheep had been killed over night by a pack of hyenas suspected to be from Nairobi, Amboseli or Tsavo national parks near his home in Kajiado North Sub-County. “We were told the wild animals were dumped in Kajiado from one of the parks, but they have become a great threat to our livestock,” he tells HealthyNation.

Three months ago, two people were killed by marauding elephants in Merueshi, Kajiado East Sub-County. Every now and then, lions get out of the parks and terrorise people along their path. “When there is drought, they get out of the park in search of food, sometimes they get into people’s houses,” says Tiampati.

But, Kajiado residents have decided they will not take the attacks lying down any longer. “If they (hyenas) attack, let’s say one sheep, we poison the carcass and put it in their path. Once they eat this, they’ll die,” says a villager who did not wish to be named.

This is neither the first nor the last incident of human-wildlife conflict in Kajiado County and elsewhere. The animals are in distress. Feeling trapped and with their habitats threatened, they now invade homes and farms. The result has been conflict.

ILLEGAL ENTRY

The only park within a city and other wildlife parks may be facing weightier trouble than pastoralists and poaching. Nairobi National Park may in the next several years become a zoo. “The greatest threat to wildlife right now is infrastructure and human development. Land grabbing, fragmentation, fencing and developments on the southern side of Nairobi National Park will soon convert the park to a zoo,” says Director of Operations at East African Wildlife Society Daniel Letoiye.

A threat to wildlife is a threat to life as we know it. If wildlife is no longer able to migrate, plants will also be adversely affected. This is because in their movement, wild animals disperse seeds of different plants including grass.
During migration, the animals also till land by digging with their hooves and manure it, as well as prune shrubs. As a result, there is healthy vegetation cover and small animals thrive, water penetrates the soil, and biodiversity is improved.

It is Saturday afternoon when HealthyNation finds Tiampati herding his 63 cattle on the Southern Bypass outside the Nairobi National Park. But, he cannot allow the livestock to enter the park because he knows the consequences all too well.

“The park is government property and if we graze there, we will be in trouble,” says Tiampati, adding that they take their livestock anywhere there is grass, including to Tanzania, but not inside the national parks.

But others are not afraid, and graze inside protected areas. Illegal entry with livestock into national parks and game reserves form the bulk of breach of protected areas at 52 per cent, according to data from WildlifeDirect.

NATIONAL PARKS

Between 2016 and 2017, there were 650 cases of illegal entry with livestock in national parks.

But, Tiampati and other pastoralists may not be the number one threat to wildlife survival in the country.

Letoiye says the southern side of the park is the only open migratory corridor for wildlife to and from Nairobi National Park.

This is because office buildings, factories and estates line the northern, eastern and western sides, blocking the crucial routes. But the southern corridor is also becoming narrower.

On the southern side, high-end estates and commercial buildings dot the landscape. A few kilometres away, over the horizon, are Syokimau, Kitengela and Athi River towns, which are growing exponentially and eating into Naretunoi Conservancy.

The “sheep and goats” conservancy, as Mr Letoiye calls it, is highly threatened and may soon disappear because of these towns.

It is the only avenue remaining for wildlife to roam freely from the park to Amboseli National Park, a home to at least 3,000 elephants, further south towards Tanzania, and vice versa.

Murkomen (for once) tickles people with brilliant clap-back at ex-IG Kimaiyo

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has taken a swipe at former Inspector-General of Police David Kimaiyo after he vowed to unseat him in the 2022 general election.

Dr Kimaiyo, in an interview with the Nation, said Mr Murkomen had failed to sort out issues affecting residents of the county and instead only focuses on tangatanga politics.

But Murkomen had a ready response for the former IG, reminding him of his earlier pledge of vying for the presidency come 2022.

He simply captioned the video: “Plesident Kingston.”

In the short video recorded in 2016, Dr Kimaiyo said he would vie for presidency once President Uhuru Kenyatta completes his second term in office. He then promised to vie for the position of a Senator for Elgeyo Marakwet County in the 2017 general election.

He went on to lose to Mr Murkomen in the August 2017 general elections, garnering 22,000 votes against Mr Murkomen’s 117,000.

The former IG, who is remembered for his peculiar remarks during the Westgate attack, seems to have had a change of mind on the presidential bid.

Mr Murkomen, who often finds himself in trouble with Kenyans on Twitter for his stances on various issues affecting the country, got some backing this time round.

Four suspected cyber criminals arrested while trying to steal money from an ATM

Detectives on Tuesday night arrested four people who were trying to steal money from a Barclays Bank ATM in  Ruiru.

The suspects were ambushed by the detectives and caught in the act after several attempts to get access to the ATM failed.

THE SUSPECTS

The suspects have been identified as  Hillary Ng’eno (KK Security, Runda), Jared Nyang’au (G4S, Ruiru), Douglas Momanyi, who is a boda boda rider, and Jacob Barasa.

Police recovered a mobile phone – which they believe was used to make contact to a source – a nylon sack that was meant to be used in carrying the loot and a motorcycle.

The latest arrest comes after a suspect who is believed to be the mastermind of the theft at different ATMs in Nairobi was arraigned in Kiambu court on Tuesday.

The suspect identified as Robert Mwaura Mwatia was arrested on Sunday alongside two security guards, Stanley Nyakundi and Godfrey Masinde Simiyu.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mr Mwaura recruited security guards manning various ATMs to his criminal ring.

SECRET CODES

Mwaura would send the guards secret withdrawal codes which they would then use to withdraw money from the ATMs.

“Upon withdrawing the money conned from unsuspecting members of the public, the said guards have been taking their agreed upon portion and sending the rest to Mwaura,” said the DCI.

With a special pack of keys and some insider knowledge, the criminals are able to reconfigure ATMs to dispense the amounts they want.

The DCI further established that the two guards had in September alone sent at least Sh2.2 million to Mwaura.

Cases of unsuspecting Kenyans losing their money to cyber criminals have been on the rise with the Kenya Cyber Security Report by Serianu consultancy showing that Kenya lost Sh21.1 billion to cyber crime in 2017, a 40 per cent increase from Sh15.1 billion in 2015.

Court suspends Mary Wambui’s appointment as Employment Authority boss

Not so fast, the employment court has told politician Mary Wambui in her quest to take the job at the National Employment Authority.

Justice Hellen Wasilwa issued the order in Nairobi on Wednesday in a case filed by the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association.

In the case championed by the association’s chairman-cum-Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja, the petitioners argue that Ms Wambui is not qualified under the law, policy and best practice, to be the chairperson of the authority.

NOT CONFORM

Ms Wambui, Mr Sakaja’s team argues, does not conform to the provisions of Section 10 (2)(c) of the National Employment Authority Act and does not meet the threshold of having at least seven years’ experience in human resource management or its equivalent.

The qualifications of the chairperson of the authority, they say, are mandatory and not discretionary.
The association says Ms Wambui has on several occasions personally admitted that she possesses a limited education, which for all intents and purposes makes her unqualified and unsuitable to conduct the affairs of the chairperson.

The petitioners argue that her appointment would disfranchise the Kenyan taxpayer given the very strategic nature of the position.

“The directive of appointing the 3rd respondent, who is not qualified is not only retrogressive, arbitrary and stale, but also attempts to uncharacteristically undermine the principles of public participation and guiding principles of leadership and integrity,” the petition reads.

Justice Wasilwa certified the case as urgent and set the hearing for November 14.

Sports betting company Odibets has announced that it will use kits sponsorship initiative to promote safer gambling among Kenyans.

Speaking to media last week during the unveiling of their top winners, the company revealed that their kits initiative is still on as their search for partners continues.

Odibets country marketing manager Aggrey Sayi, mentioned that the company was ‘delighted’ with the success of the first phase of their 35,000 kits initiative stating that the new one will continue to build on what the company was already doing in various parts of the country.

He also acknowledged the role sports betting firms play when it comes to gambling problem in the country.

“Gambling companies and the industry at large have a role to play in promoting healthy betting behavior among the youth.

“Odibets abides by the rules and regulations from the government through the BCLB around responsible gambling which you can see on all our adverts,” Mr Sayi stated.

Although the company dropped their shirt sponsorship deal with premier league side Mathare United due to the massive tax burden, Mr Sayi stated that Odibets will reinvent sponsorship to benefit more local communities while citing initiatives the company has sponsored in areas like Vihiga, Rongai and the expansive Rift valley.

“Our strategy is to find partners in all corners of the country to have a more direct impact,” he concluded while reiterating that the company hasn’t completely written off premiership sponsorships in the future.

Ladies, sell your bodies and stop asking men for money – Huddah

Kenyan socialite Huddah Monroe has dished out a controversial piece of advice to women on how to stop borrowing money from men.

The socialite-cum-businesslady, who is known to speak her mind, baffled her fans on Tuesday, after she advised women to sell their bodies, save some money and open businesses.

“If you are a woman, stop borrowing 24-7. Go sell that p***y. Save the money and start selling groceries. Nothing in life is f*****g free. Everyone works hard for their sh*t,” wrote Huddah on her Insta stories.

Route to her success

She did not say if this was her route to her current success.

The self-proclaimed “boss lady” advised women not to depend on men for financial support without building their own personal life.

“I know telling people to sell p***y is bad advice but Ah! But whoever its (SIC) directed to some chronic borrowers know themselves. Do whatever, as long as don’t put your problems on people every day and get mad when they cut you off! It’s that simple! Everyone is hustling to make ends meet. No free biz!”

The Kenyan socialite owns a successful cosmetic line “Huddah” that sells lipsticks, eye shadow palettes and makeup wipes. She also owns a fashion line “Rebel by howdah” which was launched in 2018.

In August 2018, the 27-year-old admitted to being in a stable relationship for a year and claimed to be in love. The socialite is yet to reveal the man who is warming her heart.

Here is why Lupita is one of the ‘most dangerous’ celebrities online

Award-winning Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o has been named among the most dangerous celebrities online, according to McFee’s list.

Lupita came in at number five as one of the celebrities more likely to land users on websites that carry viruses or malware in 2019.

Interest in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is believed to have placed Lupita that high in the list.

Actress Alexis Bledel of Gilmore Girls and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was named the most dangerous celebrity on the internet in 2019.

Trailing Bledel is talk show host James Corden, followed by Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner and actress Anna Kendrick ahead of Lupita in the top five.

The top 10 is completed by talk show star Jimmy Fallon, martial arts master Jackie Chan, the rappers Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj and Marvel actress Tessa Thompson in that order.

The survey is meant to highlight the danger of clicking on suspicious links.

MALICIOUS LINKS

Bad actors will attach malware and malicious links to famous names, hoping fans searching for videos on the internet will fall victim.

McAfee urges internet users to consider risks associated with searching for pirated content and always apply updated security fixes.

“Criminals use deceptive websites to dupe unsuspecting consumers into accessing malicious files or content. It is essential that consumers learn to protect their digital lives from lurking cyber criminals by thinking twice before they click on suspicious links or download content,” the company said in a statement.

Last year’s list was topped by actress Ruby Rose largely because of the hype around her playing Batwoman.

What Kenyans already don’t like about the soon-to-be-constructed Expressway

Kenyans online have been angered by the emerging reports that the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)-Westlands Expressway will cut through Uhuru Park grounds.

The construction of the 27-kilometer Expressway was commissioned last week by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The highway will commence at JKIA and end at James Gichuru Road along Waiyaki Way in Westlands and will be constructed by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).

Under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, investors will recoup their money plus profit from toll fees paid by motorists using the expressway upon its completion.

ICONIC PARK

The Sh65 billion double-decker road will have multiple interchanges at intersections on Popo-Kapiti, Lang’ata-Lusaka, Bunyala, Rhapta, and James Gichuru roads.

The state-of-the-art highway will also have special features such as the bus rapid transit (BRT) system where large-capacity buses will have dedicated lanes to ease congestion.

However, on social media, Kenyans are not amused by reports that the road will eat part of the iconic Uhuru Park, a popular recreation ground located within the city.

Two masons who bought a mobile phone from a woman involved in theft of a motor vehicle were Tuesday charged with stealing the car after police failed to the suspected car thief.

The two accused persons are Edward Kamau Muchiri and Stephen Mwange Mutemi.

CARJACKED

The woman’s phone was traced and found with Mutemi who had bought it from Muchiri on October 11.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations could neither trace the woman nor recover the vehicle hence the decision to have Muchiri and Mwange bearing responsibility and explaining how they came into possession of the woman’s phone.

The two were accused of stealing the car – Isuzu DMax worth Sh 3 million – from Evelyn Mbithe Kisalu on January 3, jointly with others still at large.

On the material day, the car’s driver Gabriel Mutie was called by a client who claimed to be in need of transport services as she moved houses.

Mutie met the client who took him to a hotel within Ruai township for super before he helped her in relocation.

The next day, the driver later woke up at a room alone and naked.

THROW AWAY PRICE

Apparently, the woman had administered unknown stupefying drugs which made him unconscious before she took off with the car.

The victim later reported the matter to Ruai Police Station.

Muchiri said in court that he bought the phone from the woman at Sh 2,500 because he had sold his to offset some loans.

He claims the woman sold him the phone at a throw away price.

Both suspects denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Angelo Kithinji.

They were freed on bond pending hearing of the case starting February 27, 2020.

A 15-year-old Kenyan girl who went missing in a Germany town last week on Tuesday has been found dead.

The teenager, only identified as Britney from Drewitz in Brandenburg, had reportedly quarreled with her mother before she left their home in Drewitz in Potsdamapparently to visit some acquaintances. But she showed up nor returned home.

BODY FOUND

On Tuesday afternoon, her body was found by a man who had gone fishing along the river where her bag and personal belongings were found a day after she had disappeared.

Her body was found on the same spot the coast guard had searched for two days.

Police who were called at the scene confirmed that the body belonged to Britney.

“The girl still wore the clothes she was reported missing in, blue jeans and a white T-shirt, and she still had her cell phone with her. Her monthly train ticket was still in her pocket,” Reinhold Hüpkes – the coordinator of the first responders told the press after the rescue operation.

According to the first police press release, Britney had gotten into an argument with her mother and left their home on Tuesday evening at 10pm.

However, on Tuesday morning it was discovered that some information might have gotten lost in translation when the police interviewed Britney’s mother.

ARGUMENT

Using a translator on Tuesday morning, it was discovered that Britney actually left home on Tuesday afternoon at 1pm. The argument with her mother had taken place on Monday evening.

On the day of her disappearance, Britney was seen alighting from a tram at the Potsdam Central Station at 1:28 pm.

At 1:37 pm, she was seen meeting up with a friend around the Tram stop on Friedrich-Engels-Strasse, then she walked into the train station, where she was last seen.

According to local media reports, Britney was “online” for the last time on the day of her disappearance at 1.50 pm, when she was last active on WhatsApp.

According to the police, a witness mentioned to have seen her at 2.30 pm with two girls in the lobby of the Potsdam Central Station where they were taking pictures.

FOUL PLAY

One of the girls she was taking pictures with, who is of African descent, has not been reachable for comment.

The Federal Crime Police have initiated investigations into her death and at the moment no suspicion of foul play and a final confirmation shall be made once the investigations and the autopsy have been conducted.

Potsdam’s Mayor, Mike Schubert, responded with great sadness to the news of Britney’s death.

“All of us in Potsdam are dismayed by the death of the young student. It is awful and sad when a young girl in our midst dies unexpectedly. It is unfortunate that our hope in finding her live has not been fulfilled. We pass our condolences to and mourn with her mom, her family and her friends,” Schubert said.

Britney moved to Germany from Kenya with her mother and her younger brother about two and a half years ago. She used to attend a Gesamtschule in Potsdam.

I looked at how polluted Nairobi River is. What I found

$
0
0

A lot happens along the course of the Nairobi River as it makes its way from the north west to the south east of the city. It’s mainly used by residents of low-income settlements as a source of water for cleaning homes, bathing and for watering crops. But it’s also used to discard household and human waste as many homes don’t have toilets, and industrial waste is frequently dumped in the river.

I’ve done studies on the quality of water in Nairobi River focusing on the presence of metals in the water. I found that the levels of lead, copper, chromium, zinc and manganese were far beyond those allowed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority.

I also found harmful levels of bacteria. The levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) were incredibly high – up to one million units in 100ml of water. There should be no E.coli in drinking water. It’s presence indicates faecal contamination, which could lead to periodic outbreaks of water-borne diseases like typhoid, cholera and dysentery.

There are major concerns about the state of the river, which runs through the heart of the country’s capital – Nairobi. And Kenya’s national environmental management agency is cracking down on industries accused of discharging pollutants into the river.

But there are huge holes in the governance of the river and the city’s waste, which have enabled the river’s poor condition. More needs to be done to address this, especially as the city continues to grow.
Waste management

There needs to be better management of industrial waste. Policies that govern waste water purification from industries aren’t strictly followed, often due to a lack of official monitoring. The heavy metals I found indicate industrial waste that comes from paint, leather and electroplating industries, among others.

Another problem is a lack of proper solid waste management. Kenya currently doesn’t have landfills, most solid waste is disposed of in uncontrolled, open dumpsites. An engineered landfill is deliberately constructed to handle waste. It’s lined at the bottom to prevent groundwater pollution and has a system to collect and treat leachates and capture biogas.

Human waste is also not treated properly. There are very few sanitation facilities in slums and other informal settlements, so residents will use the river to dispose of their waste. For those with sanitation facilities, there are just two sewage treatment plants that service Nairobi – Ruai and Kariobangi. But Ruai can’t process very much waste water and most of the equipment at the Kariobangi treatment plant has broken down.

Pollution impact

These pollutants can affect the health of those who rely on the river, or live close to it. For instance, farmers along the Nairobi River and its tributaries commonly use polluted water and raw sewage for irrigation. This exposes them, and consumers, to disease or infections.

Compounds from industries can have wide-ranging effects. For instance, lead is known to affect children’s mental development, cadmium can damage kidneys and some compounds, like chromium, are carcinogenic.
What needs to be done

A lot needs to be done.

First, the river itself needs to be cleaned. This can be done by diverting it as it enters the county into a dam. Then air can be pumped into the water to provide more oxygen to break down harmful chemicals – a process called aeration. Other processes of water purification can also be used such as introducing clay and charcoal, which can filter water. A monitoring plant will then need to be set up to return the water to the river course. It would be good to have several water treatment dams and monitoring sites along the course of the river.

While this is happening, the government must ensure that sewage units are efficient and that policies involving waste water disposal into the river are adhered to.

Mechanisms to prevent further pollution must also be put in place.

Companies must be held accountable for their waste. For instance, policies exist on how industries should manage their waste water. They must be enforced by the relevant government authorities, and tough penalties be imposed on defaulters.

Sanitation facilities need to be set up in informal settlements, and used properly. There are many systems to upgrade informal settlements, but these need to happen at a much larger scale. Investment is lacking because the settlements are only meant to be temporary.

Also, proper methods of dumping waste, such as well-engineered landfills, need to be put in place. The county government needs to do this so that solid waste doesn’t leach dangerous substances into the river.

Finally, waste water treatment plants to handle the waste produced in the county must be upgraded and expanded.

Sonko accuses city planners of ‘causing more deaths than terrorists’

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has turned the heat on the national association of planners to tame errant members, accusing them of causing more deaths than terrorists.

This comes after the Kenya Institute of Planners (KIP) – the umbrella body of professional planners in Kenya – had last month accused City Hall of unnecessary delays in the processing of development applications alleging undue political interference.

The institute faulted the county government for failing to provide approval of the development permissions for the past four months

However, Sonko has blamed the members of the organisation for contributing to the “rot and filth” at City Hall’s Urban Planning Department.

“It goes without saying that members of your professional body have been responsible for more deaths than terrorists in a span of five years in Nairobi under your watch, Sonko said.

Governor Sonko pointed out that between June, 2014 and September 30, 2019; a total of 110 Kenyans have lost their lives and scores injured in 11 tragedies involving collapsed buildings in Nairobi compared to 21 deaths as a result of terrorist attacks in the capital city during the same period.

The deaths, injuries and destruction of properties, according to the governor, were as a result of the approvals issued to substandard buildings and other structures given by your unscrupulous members working at the Urban Planning Department.

The issuance of the approvals allegedly happened under the watch of suspended Urban Planning chief officer Justus Kathenge, a member of KIP, who had risen from a director of Urban Planning which he was appointed to in 2014.

NEGLIGENCE

Mr Sonko added that Mr Kathenge was implicated by a 2017 report of the Ombudsman in the Huruma tragedy where 52 people died for negligence and failure to enforce compliance.

KIP chairman Dr Lawrence Esho had stated that undue political pressure on officials at the planning department and frequent interference with an electronic platform the county had transitioned to in processing of the development applications had hampered the seamless process of receiving and processing of the same subsequently rendering inefficient, the entire planning and development control system.

“The attendant lack of capacity, and inefficiencies in the plan approval and enforcement system leaves land owners with no alternative but to circumvent these critical processes which in turn frustrates the quest for orderly and sustainable development with the city,” read in part the petition by Dr Esho dated September 30.

The Institute had also raised issues with the suspension of over 10 officials from the department saying that the vacuum created by irregular suspension of directors will serve to compound the aforementioned challenges involving stalled plan approval of development permissions process.

However, the City Hall boss countered stating that the suspended officers play no role in development control but maintained that he will not relent in his efforts to clean-up the mess at the department and restore sanity in the building sector in Nairobi.

“I will never permit the shenanigans that have characterised the department, or any other, to continue under my watch, endangering the lives of Nairobi residents while at the same time flouting zoning policies with impunity to end up with the mess that the city is today,” said Sonko.

Nick Mwendwa: I’ll take Harambee Stars to 2022 World Cup

Outgoing Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa on Wednesday vowed to steer Harambee Stars to compete at the FIFA World Cup for the first time in the country’s history if he is re-elected for a second four-year term in office.

He spoke to journalists at the federation’s Kandanda House secretariat at Kasarani, moments after returning his nomination papers to FKF’s Electoral Board.

“The Electoral Board officials say they will confirm my candidature in three days’ time and I am confident of getting clearance (to contest),” said Mwendwa.

“In our first term, we ensured our men and women national teams played at their respective Africa Cup of Nations. The women team is also on course to qualify for the Olympics for the first time in history. Our plan is to try and play at the 2022 or 2026 Fifa World Cup.”

The Fifa World Cup is the world’s biggest sporting showpiece.

But other aspirants namely Sam Nyamweya, Moses Akaranga, Alex Ole Magelo, and Simon Mburu all failed to turn up for the nominations, claiming the entire electoral process had been altered to favour Mwendwa.

“We will petition ( the sport’s world governing body) Fifa on this matter because this is a selection and not election. The Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) should stop favouring Mwendwa,” said Ole Magelo.

Stakeholders have filed cases at the SDT and High Court challenging the composition of the Electoral Board and the validity of the exercise.

“If anyone gunning for the presidency doesn’t present his nominations by 5pm, then he or she will not participate in the elections. We did not make these rules, the (FKF) delegates did,” explained Electoral Board chairman Edwin Wamukoya.

Accompanied by his running mate Doris Petra and hundreds of youthful supporters donning ‘team Blue’ branded t-shirts, Mwendwa, whose first-year term in office has been marred by challenges and especially a lack of goodwill from the corporates, explained he’s convinced the coming years will be better.

The FKF national elections will be held on December 7.

A Kenyan teacher was on Wednesday among three tutors who were awarded with the first continental teacher prize by the Africa Union in Ethiopia for their outstanding performance.

Erick Ademba, a teacher at Asumbi Girls School in Kenya, Augusta Lartey-Young from Presbyterian Boy’s Secondary School in Ghana and Gladys K., from a school in Uganda scooped the prizes.

Mr Ademba received a certificate and Sh1 million at a ceremony held at the AU Headquarters in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.

The teachers were recognized for helping students achieve their long-term career goals, quality teaching and encouraging desirable behaviours in schools, among others.

BE INNOVATIVE

Speaking after getting the award, Mr Ademba said the prize promotes the image of teaching on the African continent and motivates African teachers to be innovative.

“The award will improve teaching image since teachers in Africa will feel recognized,” said Mr Ademba.

Speaking at the ceremony, Beatrice Njenga, Head of AU Education Division, noted that the teacher prize is an important and valuable instrument that contributes to the success of Agenda 2063 and continental Education strategy for Africa (CESA).

“It will enhance visibility and status of the teacher in Africa at all levels from early childhood to tertiary levels including TVET, and promote teaching as a first choice profession,” said Ms Njenga.

The AU hopes that the prize will raise the status of the teaching profession and the teacher, and inspire the best possible candidates to join the profession. It further hopes to serve as a catalyst for similar programmes at regional and national levels.

Seacom on Wednesday said that the entire East African Coast was hit by a major network outage.

The sub-sea cable system provider, reported an outage that affected some key services and internet service providers in Kenya and its region.

One of the key service providers affected in Kenya was Zuku who informed their subscribers on social media.

“We have an outage on our main undersea cable. Our traffic is now on alternative routes. However these cannot efficiently handle the load, and thus the slow speeds you’re experiencing. Our provider is working to restore our main route in the shortest time possible. Kindly bear with us,” tweeted Zuku.

Normal service was restored at 1pm.

On their part, SEACOM said the outage occurred at 1am Kenya time adding that it affected all linear transmission traffic on their cable from South Africa, Mozambique, and the East Coast of Africa, to and from Europe.

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has said that an area of 1.3 acres along Uhuru Highway will be hived off from Uhuru Park to make way for the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)-Westlands Expressway.

The Sh59 billion project, which will be financed under the public-private partnership (PPP), will start at Mlolongo and head to JKIA all the way to James Gichuru.

According to KeNHA, the government has made deliberate efforts to minimise land acquisition for the project.

“The preliminary land-take is approximately 35 acres, including 60 percent of public land and 40 percent of private property,” said KenNHA in a statement.

KeNHA has further explained that the developer will take a risk to construct the Expressway as the existing road will still be maintained and in use and that no motorist will be forced to use the Expressway.

The Expressway will be tolled at a cost of Sh11.24 per km.

The double-decker which was launched last week by President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to reduce the heavy traffic gridlocks along Mombasa Road, which starts from the Mlolongo to the city centre.

DELAYED PROJECT

It will have multiple interchanges at intersections on Popo-Kapiti, Lang’ata-Lusaka, Bunyala, Rhapta, and James Gichuru roads.

The state-of-the-art highway will also have special features such as the bus rapid transit (BRT) system where large-capacity buses will have dedicated lanes to ease congestion.

The agency indicated that the interchanges would be constructed after considering factors such as existing road networks, topography, land acquisition and return on investment.

The project has delayed for nearly a decade. The first construction attempt collapsed when the World Bank questioned its suitability and cut financing.

The proposed elevated dual carriageway is to be built in three phases beginning with the first 6.5 kilometres running from JKIA to Likoni Road and the Southern Bypass interchange.

Abbout 3,000 people will be employed during construction and 500 during the operation of the Expressway.
