Tension in Kawangware 56 was high on Thursday evening as area youths continued with their protests against fresh presidential election that ended at 5pm.

All major roads in the populous area considered a Nasa zone have been barricaded with boulders and only area residents are allowed to beyond the blockade.

Attempts by Nairobi News to cover acts of violence witnessed in area early in the day that saw property worth millions of shillings razed down, including the famous Zebra Club, were thwarted as the youths denied the media access.

There have been no sight of police officers with only a few people venturing out on the streets. The area has also been affected by power blackout.

A video showing protestors in Migori taking some time out from violent confrontation with the police to prepare a meal by the roadside has gone viral on social media.

In the video, a group of youth, mainly men, are seen helping each other prepare a meal of ugali with vegetables.

At a source of fire, the group is seen using firewood and three stones to prepare their meal.

Migori is one of the counties, in Nasa strongholds where the voting exercise failed to take off as youths engaged police officers in running battles the whole day.

There have been reports of fatalities and injuries across the counties that were rocked by violence and clashes between rioters and police officers on Election Day.

The video evoked mixed reaction from Kenyans on Twitter with many left in stitches by the scene.

An altercation between Jubilee and Nasa MPs has evoked interesting reactions from the online community making netizens a confused lot on whether they should acknowledge the fact that for once it is the politicians doing the fighting or condemn the reckless behavior.

It all started when Elgoyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen claimed that he had paid a refreshment bill for the Nasa leaders, while giving a press conference at Panafric Hotel.

That is when furious Nasa leaders led by Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch stormed the press conference forcing Mr Murkomen to flee after a bitter verbal exchange.

This was then followed by Senator Sakaja coming in to conclude the Jubilee press conference that had been interrupted but was unable to do as the Mathare MP came back to continue expressing his displeasure at his fellow legislators.

The press conference was cut short when blows were exchanged between Mr Oluoch a group of men from the Jubilee side.

On social media Kenyans found the uncensored raw footage of the confrontation at the end of the Election Day entertaining.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ezra Chiloba has rubbished claims that he is pulling strings behind the scene in the presidential election despite being on leave.

In a tweet, Chiloba responded to claims by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed alleging that he is facilitate rigging process in favour of the ruling Jubilee in the election held on Thursday October 26.

Chiloba took a three-week leave last week in what sources close to commission termed as a “personal decision (on Chiloba’s part) to be away in order to build confidence in stakeholders” who had complained about him.

FRAUDULENT RESULTS

“Chiloba is now a consultant in chief for Jubilee within the commission and is outrightly procuring fraudulent results to be tallied and posted as votes cast in Nasa strongholds. This is criminal. We invite the DCI to immediately commence investigations and probe the CEO plus any election official who may have yielded to his demands,” Mohamed said on Thursday shortly after the conclusion of the voting exercise.

But in his response Chiloba termed to Mohamed’s claims as “misleading allegations” about him.

IEBC won’t extend election beyond Saturday

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will not extend presidential election in counties where the exercise didn’t happen beyond Saturday October 28, 2017.

The voting exercise either failed to take off or was largely disrupted in Nasa stronghold counties. In some polling centres election officials failed to show up for the exercise for fear of reprisal.

Speaking during a press briefing on the tallying process at the end of the voting exercise on Thursday evening at the Bomas of Kenya, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati said a decision will have to be made if a similar situation unfolds in the counties that are expected to participate in the voting exercise on Saturday.

POSTPONED

The four affected counties affected where the election were postponed and rescheduled for Saturday are Migori, Siaya, Homa Bay and Kisumu, which are considered to be Nasa strongholds.

“The law is very clear, if you look at section 55b of the Election Act, it says that where there is a natural factor preventing voting, or in case like what we have experienced today, issues that breach peace, the commission is under duty to give the voters a chance to exercise their rights and that is what we are doing,” Chebukati said.

“Now, if in case Saturday we have similar issues, then the commission will have to make a decision on the way forward. But we cannot keep on extending that right to vote after Saturday,” he added.

Supreme Court to hold sitting today on Raila’s poll boycott

Supreme Court will once again be on focus Friday morning as Jubilee Party seeks to convince the judges that Nasa leaders should be jailed for contempt of court.

The case, was filed on October 19 by Jubilee Party, which accused Nasa leaders of planning to sabotage Thursday’s poll.

The case was taken before Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu, who directed the party to serve Mr Odinga and his running mate Kalonzo Musyoka with the submissions.

She then directed the case to be mentioned before the Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court on October 27.

Jubilee, through secretary-general Raphael Tuju, wants to commit Mr Odinga and Mr Musyoka to civil jail for six months for disobeying a court order by planning to disrupt the repeat election.

Appearing before DCJ Mwilu, lawyer Tom Macharia said Nasa leaders, who successfully petitioned the Supreme Court to nullify the August 8 presidential election, have “embarked on a calculated scheme including through use of violence and threat of unlawful sabotage of the elections”.

Mr Odinga asked his supporters to boycott the election and most of them heeded the call and stayed away from the polling stations.

Sonko faulted for allowing hawkers in city centre

The move by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to allow hawkers into the city centre has elicited mixed reactions.

The governor announced last week that the hawkers would officially be allowed access to the central business district as early as 2 pm to sell their wares.

The move was informed by a report that was unveiled by the county on how to deal with the hawking problem in the city centre.

POPULIST

In a city centre already grappling with the pressure of street families and traffic congestion, the development has come as a surprise to residents, shop and stall owners, who termed the move populist and a step backwards for the city.

Those who own shops and stalls pay between Sh9,500 and Sh13, 700 in licence fees annually on top of other fees.

Mr Charles Muchemi, a shop owner on Kirinyaga Road, criticised the governor for allowing the hawkers in the city centre.

He said the hawkers were disruptive and had made traders who pay licence fees to the county incur losses. He added that the hawkers were blocking shops and their presence had resulted in crime incidents such as pick pocketing due to congestion.

NOT MAKE SENSE

Mr Ashok Kuldal, who owns a shop at the CBD, said the move did not make sense and that the only solution was to have permanent spaces for the hawkers away from CBD.

Another trader, Ms Beatrice Ngige, said the county should instead build permanent stalls for the hawkers and relocate them instead of putting time limits for them because they will not adhere to the directive.

She added that some hawkers were selling their wares at cheap prices. “They have made us suffer losses as they sell the same things we sell but at a lower price as theirs are of low quality,” she said.

Mr Dan Momanyi, who works at the city centre, said: “Sonko promised a lot of things yet nothing has been accomplished. Allowing hawkers in the CBD will make things worse. Right now moving around the city is very hard.”

However, hawkers welcomed the decision, saying it would allow them to operate without harassment from city askaris.

SOURCE OF LIVELIHOOD

“This is our source of livelihood. We do not have anywhere to go,” said a hawker who identified herself as Mama Mwende.

Another hawker, Mr Jayson Nzeva, lauded the move but averred that it would even have been better if they were allowed access to the CBD as early as 11 am.

Interestingly, the hawkers had already spread their wares in various alleys and streets as early as 10 am, four hours before the allowed time of operation.

How youths unleashed bees to disrupt voting

Police had a rough time controlling rowdy youths who used a swarm of bees to block the entrance of a polling station in Malava Constituency, Kakamega County.

The youth carried a hive full of the bees to Matsakha Primary School polling station forcing IEBC officials to call in the law enforcers from Malava Police Station.

A handful voters present were forced to move far away from the gate fearing attack by the bees.

Malava OCPD Anne Muli led an operation to fight the bees.

Police had earlier arrested some youths at Matsakha and Shilongo for attempting to disrupt voting.

CHIEF CHASED AWAY

At Mugai primary school, an assistant chief was chased away by angry locals who accused him of dishing handouts to coerce people to vote.

Locals said the officer was giving people perceived to be Jubilee supporters Sh50 and directing them to the polling station to cast their ballots.

But Hassan Musumi, the Sundulo Sub-Location chief, denied the claims saying he went to the polling station to see how the voting was progressing.

“It is not true that I was giving out money. I just went to the polling station to find out whether things were going on well and left immediately,” he said adding that he has no money to give out.

MAN BEATS WIFE

Earlier, a man in the area beat up his wife accusing her of going to vote against his wish.

Ezekiel Kitiavi confronted his wife as she was walking back home from Mugai polling centre.

“It is common knowledge that I am a Nasa supporter yet my wife sneaked to go and vote for Jubilee,” he told journalists.

Most of the polling stations in the area were deserted despite having been opened in good time.

Malava Constituency Returning Officer Isaac Ruto said there were isolated cases of hitches with Kiems kist which were later resolved.

Malava MP Malulu Injendi cast his ballot at Lugusi Primary School.

He was optimistic that Jubilee would garner more than the 8,000 votes it bagged on August 8.

A presiding officer has been arrested in Magarini, Kilifi County after he abandoned ballot boxes and switched off his phone.

Four other presiding officers delayed announcement of results at Shanzu Teachers College tallying centre in Kisauni constituency after they abandoned ballot boxes and also switched off their phones.

Magarini police managed to trace the presiding officer and arrested him for absconding duty.

Magarini police boss Gerald Barasa said they arrested Mr Nicholas Surei, who is the Kwa Ndomo polling station presiding officer for abandoning the election materials overnight at Mapimo Polytechnic tallying Centre.

MATERIALS UNMANNED

“The presiding officer, who is also a teacher left the election materials unmanned. Detectives managed to trace him in the morning,” he said.

The presiding officer was taken to the tallying centre to present the results before he was whisked away by police. He will be taken to court today.

In Kisauni, tallying was delayed as the presiding officers abandoned the ballot boxes outside the constituency centre.

“They cannot be reached since their phones are switched off and I cannot announce the results in their absence,” said Mr Alphonce Tsuwi, the returning officer.

Mr Tsuwi said they are trying to trace the officers.

“They might have gone to sleep thinking that the process will take long,” he said.

A city MP has come out to clear the air on the circumstance of a photo in which an under-age girl was captured checking her fingerprint identity on a Kiems Kit.

Lang’ata MP Nixon Korir was pictured with the girl in one photo, while in another the child is seen pressing her thump on the Kiems Kit.

Mr Korir has since been under pressure to explain why a person ineligible to vote was granted access to election tools.

WhatsApp-Image-2017-10-27-at-11.14.07

But in a Facebook post, the Jubilee MP explained that the girl is a daughter to a friend and that she had escorted her father to vote.

The October 26 was marred by massive low voter turnout. Poll officials in Nairobi attributed the voter apathy to rains experienced in the city on election day. Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s call for a national boycott of the vote could also have played a role.

On social media, debate on the low turnout sparked comments, hard tackles and jokes.

Hilarious photos were shared of idle polling clerks seated on their desks waiting for voters. Stray dogs and chicken in polling stations also found their way into social media.

Five peculiar things about Kenya’s repeat presidential election

The October 26 repeat presidential election has come and gone and with it a number of peculiar incidents unprecedented in Kenyan polls were reported. Here are a few that stood out:

1. Poor turnout –  The October 26 voter turnout dropped significantly as compared to the August 8 polls. The voter apathy suggest that a majority of the registered voters ignored President Uhuru Kenyatta’s call to come out and vote. Seemingly, these Kenyans voted with their feet.

2. Protests and riots – Not only did a majority of the voters abstain from the exercise, but the process was largely marred by violent protests from Nasa supporters who engaged police officers in day-long battle in the opposition strongholds. In some areas, reports were rife of voter intimidation against participating in the vote.

3. Raila voters – For some explicable reasons, some voters still cast their votes for Raila Odinga, despite the Nasa leader withdrawing his candidature and asking his supporters to boycott the exercise.

In Ikolomani Constituency, Kakamega County, for example, Odinga received some 270 votes a far better tally than those of the other candidates at the centre, save for President Kenyatta.

4. Independent candidates – As was the cas on August 8, 2017, the participation of 6 presidential candidates came into question. For instance, a majority of the returning forms perused by Nairobi News indicate that all the candidates, apart from Uhuru Kenyatta had agents at the polling centres.

5. Hostility to journalists – There were a number of returning officers – particularly in Mandera and Tharaka – who, for unknown reasons, seemed eager to break the law and deny journalists access to some polling centers.

A picture capturing a woman readying herself to throw a stone during confrontation between the police and protestors in Kisumu has gone viral on social media.

The woman in a grey t-shirt with black tight knee length pants is caught in action launching her missiles at her target with a mob of bystanders watching on in the background.

Kisumu county is one of the opposition strongholds where the voting exercise was paralyzed after protesters engaged anti-riot police officers in running battles during the October 26 repeat presidential election.

Nasa leader Raila Odinga withdrew from his candidature days to the election and asked his supporters to boycott the exercise after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) failed to meet the opposition outfit’s irreducible minimums.

As the polls closed on Thursday evening, IEBC announced that the exercise had been postponed to Saturday October 28 the voting exercise in four counties of Kisumu, Migori, Homa Bay and Siaya which were rocked by violence.

The independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has postponed the elections in four Nyanza counties from Saturday to a yet to be announced date for security reasons.

At the same time, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati has announced that repeat election will continue as scheduled on Saturday in selected polling stations in Fafi and Turkana where the exercise was affected by security issues and adverse weather conditions.

The commission had on Thursday said that it would hold repeat elections in Kisumu, Siaya, Migori and Homa Bay counties where the exercise failed to take off due to violent confrontation between protesters and police officers.

According to Chebukati, of the 40,883 polling stations, elections are yet to be held in 3,635 polling stations with 1,770,475 voters, 9 per cent of registered voters.

“The commission has deliberated on the various incidents happening in some parts of the country and has postponed the election scheduled to take place tomorrow (Saturday, October 26) to a further date to be announced,” said Mr Chebukati.

CITY GIRL: We can’t all pretend to be friends but can we at least learn to tolerate each other?

I was not shocked when on Thursday evening, mature men — and I use the word mature very cautiously — behaved like 10-year-olds in a school yard because they had a disagreement with their political rivals.

For those of you who are not very active on social media, let me report to you that the difference between how the MPs behaved and what Kenyans on social media are doing is the same, only this time, Kenyans on social media are fighting each other using bitter words and ethnic slurs.

This politics, these never-ending elections, this political ping-pong, is not only exhausting, it has brought out the worst in us, and I am frankly afraid for this country.

We have abandoned reason, suspended our thinking and thrown away our morals for the sake of politicians who couldn’t care less about us.

The madness has moved from bloggers, some of who are paid as little as Sh500 to push hashtags, to your average social media user who is now tweeting and posting Facebook updates based on their political biases.

Allow me to say one thing to those childish and immature MPs we saw on TV fighting because of their political godfathers: You need to stop crossing oceans and seas for men who would never jump over a puddle for you.

WE ARE NOT FAMILY

I mean you need to stop embarrassing yourself on national television fighting over men who would never do the same for you. Stop embarrassing your children and making their lives difficult because you want some cheap political mileage.

It is disingenuous for a mature man, and a thinking Kenyan to insult others just because they chose to go out and vote or chose to stay at home and boycott the vote. You need to ask yourself why these politicians do not involve their children and wives in street protests and heated online exchanges.

I don’t want to push the “we are brothers and sisters” cliche. We are not brothers and sisters. We cannot all pretend to be friends and love one another. Frankly, some of you are so vile and unlovable but that is okay.

I will leave that brother-sister messaging to peace-prenuers — as you call them on social media.

We are not one blood and we are not family. What we are though, is that we are Kenyans. We live in the same country and we use the same roads and guess what, we get exploited by politicians the same way, irrespective of where we come from or whether or not we throw tantrums on social media.

We belong to different cultures and some of these repel others, but that is also okay. We have political differences, we think differently and we all want different people to be president. That is also okay.

TOLERATE EACH OTHER

However, in the same way a dozen axes find a way to co-exist in one basket, so must we find a way to live with each other in this nation. I am not asking you to love your neighbour, although that would be nice.

I am only asking you to tolerate them. If they woke up early to go and vote and you stayed home to tweet about it, mind your own business. If they stayed home, shouting and screaming “sham elections!” as you stoically braved the rain and cold in the voting queue, be quiet and wait for the results.

Finally, if all else fails, and you find no reason to co-exist with your neighbour, do it for selfish reasons. You need Kenya to stay peaceful for you to go about your business and for your children to go to school in January.

You need this country to stay intact. I don’t know about you, but I am not ready to be a refugee and lose this wonderful life I have created for myself.

The analogy of Kenya as a marriage has often been used to push for a cessation discourse. I’d like you to think about it from another angle.

Think of Kenya as a marriage. In marriage, people are not always excited about each other and sometimes (for some, most times), they ask themselves “why did I get married?”. Yet, they say, ndoa ni kuvumiliana (tolerance is key in marriage).

Why can’t Kenyans use that philosophy — which we have perfected at home — while dealing with each other? Can we tolerate each other?

Singer Akothee has opened up about the father of one of his boys by giving a detailed account of how they met in Mombasa nine years ago.

The mother of five took his fans down memory lane, narrating how they two would bump into each other at Nakumatt Supermarket in Mombasa while shopping.

“We would bump into each other once in a while, at the supermarket or Tembo Disco, he would give me a big smile and look at me till I disappear, most of the time we met at Nakumatt as I shop for my children,” wrote Akothee.

As a taxi driver and an owner of a restaurant in Shanzu, her baby daddy whom she identifies as Markus would occasionally come to her restaurant to eat and then leave.

The two then started becoming affectionate to each other and this led to Markus asking her for a baby.

PREGNANCY

The two left for Switzerland and after two months she became pregnant and later came back to Kenya.

“I came back from Switzerland pregnant, only to come and find my restaurant no more, and my taxi car also finished, well he gave me 100k when I came back so I repaired my car but was not able to revive my restaurant as I already started sickling,” Akothee wrote.

“When he came to Kenya the pregnancy was 4 months and already visible, I was so sick that I could not even walk, we went with him to the hospital and he never wanted to be seen with me, so my friend Nancy admitted me in hospital as Markus waited in the car, when he was asked for his details he said ‘put her mother’s names and phone number’ well I was admitted for 3 days, he never visited me in hospital, he only came the last day to pay bills and we left.”

From there things took a turn for the worst as he started asking her to get rid of the pregnancy. But the singer did not listen to him and decided to go through with the pregnancy.

She finishes her series of posts by warning other women not to be easily charmed by the kind of men like Markus, who only want to use women for their pleasure.
