Four years on, Saitoti’s life remains mysterious in death

Four years after his death, former vice-president George Saitoti remains a mysterious man.

His life, just like the helicopter crash tin which he died on a day like today, remains shrouded in secrecy. Although he was a public figure, his family has opted to remain tight-lipped on their private investigations into his death.

Pathologists who carried out investigations into his death pointed out that Saitoti, who was Internal Security minister at the time of his death, could have been poisoned together with assistant minister Orwa Ojode, their two pilots and the two bodyguards who had accompanied them.

Before his death, the professor of mathematics had indicated he would seek election as President in the 2013 election.

“Only George Saitoti knew who George Saitoti was,” a close family friend said of the enigmatic politician. “He was an introvert.”

Saitoti never spoke either Maasai or Kikuyu languages – at least not in public. While addressing political meetings in his rural Kajiado North constituency, he would normally hire a translator.

Notably, he was born of Kikuyu parents, Zacharia Kiarie and Zipporah Gathoni, and grew up as George Kinuthia Kiarie in Olkeri, Lower Matasia. He went through the Maasai initiation rites as his father had by then become a Maasai by assimilation.

Kiarie had moved to Maasailand from Dagoretti at the height of the State of Emergency in the 1950s with many other Kikuyus escaping the colonial crackdown against the Embu, Meru and Kikuyus in Nairobi and Central Kenya.

He was hosted by his Maasai relatives and adopted the name Musengi, taken from the Kikuyu word Muthengi which means an immigrant. All his children born after the emergency had Maasai names. In all, he had 11 children.

POOR BACKGROUND

“We used to wear tattered clothes,” Saitoti once told a political rally, the closest he ever came to discussing his poor background.

“Saitoti grew up as a Maasai boy. He went through all the cultural rites,” says Nairobi County Speaker Alex ole Magero, a long-time ally of Prof Saitoti.

As a the mathematics professor at the University of Nairobi, Saitoti was among the most learned members of his adopted ethnic group. Chances are that he would have remained in academia were it not for Stanley Oloitipitip, who introduced him to politics.

While still in his thirties, Saitoti was nominated to the East African Legislature as an MP, an appointment that gave him both social and political mileage. He had also been appointed as executive chairman of Mumias Sugar and later Kenya Commercial Bank.

Despite his growing public stature, the double cultural heritage appeared to bother Saitoti, gradually turning him into an introvert, according to friends.

“Saitoti rarely shared his problems,” a close associate remembers. “Even when among the Maasai or the Kikuyu, you wouldn’t catch him speaking any of the tongues. He was like a man with no cultural identity.”

Those who attended Ololua Primary School have told the Nation in previous interviews that Saitoti was by then known as Kinuthia wa Kiarie, a name he proudly used in his PhD thesis at the University of Warwick in 1972.

Upon his return, however, and after being hired as a lecturer by University of Nairobi’s Department of Mathematics, he simply became George Saitoti. That was the name that had been given to him so that he could secure an the undergraduate scholarship at Brandeis University in the US.

UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP

Saitoti first received a scholarship for Cambridge, Western Massachusets in the US, after a brilliant performance at Mang’u High School. He entered Brandeis in September 1963 through the Wien international scholarships to study economics and maths. Brandeis was only 13 years old by the time Saitoti arrived there.

At Brandeis, Saitoti immersed himself into the university life and was one of the best in high jump. He would also spend time at the Usen Castle’s Cholmondeley’s Coffee House, ran by the students.

After graduating from Brandeis, he moved to Sussex University in the UK to pursue an advanced degree in maths, earning a master’s degree and winning another scholarship to study for a doctorate at the University of Warwick.

In the 1971 PhD thesis, Saitoti used the name George Kinuthia Kiarie Saitoti. His thesis was titled: Mod-2 K-theory of the second iterated loop space on a sphere. It was one of the first doctorates in mathematics in Kenya.

Prof Saitoti later became chairman of the Department of Mathematics but his tenure would not last long because Rift Valley political leaders started luring him with positions.

Former Cabinet minister Nicholas Biwott was among those who picked out Saitoti for a role in political leadership.

Through such influence, Prof Saitoti was eventually appointed Finance minister after the 1983 election, taking over from Mr Mwai Kibaki who could not be easily manipulated by the new Nyayo power players. Mr Kibaki was moved to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

To his credit, even when parts of Rift Valley were rocked by ethnic clashes, Saitoti’s Kajiado North Constituency never experienced the violence.

“Also, there was no violence during the 2007 post-election violence in his backyard,” says Magero.

Flirting-couple

The Nairobi woman is confident and self-assured. She likes to flirt. Unfortunately, there are many times that she flirts but the men around her miss the signs. Here is a look into hidden ways that woman you like could be flirting with you;

1. She covers her mouth when she laughs – Yes, if a Nairobi woman does this when talking to you, she just may be flirting with you. What it means when a women covers her mouth when she laughs is that she is self-conscious about talking to you. You rattle her and that is a good thing.

2. She keeps saying your name – If you are talking to this woman and she keeps dropping your name in conversation, it means that you are on the top most rank of her mind. She also could just like the sound of your name on her tongue. All what this means is that she likes you and she is secretly flirting with you.

3. Validating herself – If a woman sounds as if she is validating herself to you, she isn’t full of herself, she just likes you. She will be subconsciously dropping hints at how great she is because she likes you and wishes that you would see her this way.

4. She asks lots of questions – Have you been chatting up that woman who just keeps asking you questions? She could be flirting with you. Asking questions is the Nairobi woman’s way of prolonging conversations with a man she likes.

5. Self-touch – If you are with a woman and she keeps touching herself, she is flirting with you. She could run her palm over her arm. Her bare shoulders or her knee. This is a clear indication that you are on her mind.

6. She adjusts her hair or clothes – If a woman does this, a man might mistake it to mean that she is bored. What it really means however when a woman is all fidgety when she is talking to you is that you unnerve her. If she is adjusting her clothes, it is because she wants to look her best for you.

7. She asks you for a favor – More often than not, when a Nairobi woman asks you for assistance in a task which she clearly can do herself, she is secretly flirting. Her subconscious knows that men like to be looked up to so she is subconsciously stroking your ego.

8. She is Free – If a woman appears uninhibited while with you, answers all your questions and sometimes even gives intimate details about herself, she likes you and is most likely flirting with you.

Business at the Kisumu Law Courts was on Thursday paralysed after judges and magistrates travelled to Nairobi to bid farewell to Chief Justice Willy Mutunga whose tenure ends next week.

There were no proceedings at the courts on Thursday with all the judges and magistrates reported to have made the journey to Nairobi.

During their excursion in the capital, the judges and magistrates will also participate in the annual Judiciary sports tournament to be held at the Utalii College on Saturday.

MORALE BOOSTER

Some of the events that they will compete in are football, volleyball, athletics and netball.

Kisumu Principal magistrate, Thomas Obutu, told Nairobi News that the games seeks to boost the morale and motivation of the Judiciary officials.

“Everybody in the judiciary, irrespective of their ranks, are supposed to participate in the tournament which will also be a networking event,” the magistrate said.

he added that the outgoing Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga, who retires on June 16, will also participate in the sports tournament and later attend a farewell cocktail dinner in his honour.

Football Kenya Federation President Nick Mwendwa.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is facing the risk of having its assets auctioned over rising debts, its president Nick Mwendwa has confessed.

Speaking while appearing as a guest on SuperSport’s weekly football show Simba Super Soccer on Thursday evening, Mwendwa further highlighted the financial challenges facing the game in Kenya.

“We have 18 demand letters (from our creditors). Only yesterday (Wednesday), I received two demand letters threatening auction. We also have two coaches suing us, one at FIFA, the other at the local tribunal. It’s a mess I tell you,” Mwendwa said.

However, Mwendwa did not reveal how he plans to manage the debts estimated to be about Sh180 million, most of which were accrued during the tenure of former FKF boss Sam Nyamweya.

At the same time, Mwendwa reiterated his full support for Harambee Stars head coach Stanley Okumbi while also revealing that he has been approached by the regional football body, Cecafa, with a view to staging the annual Kagame Cup Championship in Kenya later this month.

A man who recently graduated from a Nairobi university has taken an unconventional path in his desperate job hunting mission.

Mr Gilbert Mutai, graduated from Technical University of Kenya in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, also holds a Diploma in Project Management but has been out of employment for the last one year.

He has now taken to the streets of Nairobi to ask for employment after repeated failed attempts to secure employment.

“I have been applying for employment for the last one year with no avail and yet I was one of the top students in my class. But so far nothing has come my way,” Mr Mutai told Nairobi News in the phone interview.

The 25 year old man says he attended Rongai Secondary School in Nakuru before joining university.

“My parents live in Nakuru and now I’m being housed by a relative in Kawangware. But things are not easy, that is why I’m doing what I’m doing now to see if a potential employer can hire me,” he said.

But there could soon be some good news for Mr Mutai. He says he has been receiving several calls from people telling him to send his resume for job interviews after he embarked on his bizarre job hunting mission.

“I have been here for the last three days and people have called and I thank God because now I have interviews lined up for the next few days,” he said.

A hunky male police officer has triggered a social media storm after photos displaying his well-toned body went viral, leaving female admirers drooling.

The officer, Stephen Karisa, who goes by the name Self Made on Facebook, has been an active user since January 2015.

He had been sharing his photos until this week when all hell broke loose with female users taking notice of his hot looks.

Among the viral photos are some displaying his bare-chested six pack while in others he posses with a firearm.

In the photos he dons a regular police officer’s uniform complete with a service number.

His bio on Facebook states that he is a police accountant at Vigilance House aged 26. However, during a phone interview with Nairobi News, Mr Karisa said he is a regular police officer based at Shauri Moyo.

MODELLING AMBITION

“I have just been myself for the last five years I had an online presence but all of a sudden the attention came not that I had been posting photos with any intentions,” Karisa told Nairobi News.

“I am just abit scared that the bosses might take this the wrong way, but truth is I never intended for the photos to go viral, I was just a regular Facebook user,” he added. “I only do bodybuilding for fun and to keep fit but wouldn’t mind joining a modelling agency.”

Popular women group on Facebook, Kilimani Mums Nairobi Uncensored, had over 1000 comments to the officer’s photos with women calling him the most handsome policeman.

Some joked how they would not mind being “arrested” by the officer adding that finally the police force has considered the women.

The discussion led to the introduction of photos of the officer alongside his female partner which women rubbished claiming that polygamy is allowed.

In the past, photos of hot Kenyan female officers shared online have been very popular among male users.

The famous celebrity cop Linda Okello, whose photo started a similar social media debate, got in trouble with her bosses for a skirt deemed tight.

Opposition alliance, Cord, has written to the police notifying them of two peaceful demonstrations they intend to hold on Monday and Thursday next week in their quest for the removal of officials of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

This is inspite of an order issued earlier in the week by Internal Security Cabinet Secretary, Joseph Nkaissery, which outlawed such demonstrations.

President Uhuru Kenyatta also announced on Wednesday that a Joint Select Committee drawn from the Senate and the National Assembly would be formed to resolve the standoff.

On Thursday, the ruling Jubilee coalition went ahead to announce an 11-member team that would be part of the committee for the deliberations.

PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATIONS

But in a letter dated June 10 and signed by the CEO of the secretariat Norman Magaya, Cord stated that the demonstrations will be peaceful and arrangements to have safety marshals have been made.

The letter that was addressed to the Nairobi County Police Commander and copied to the Inspector General and OCPD Central also requested the police organise for security.

“Your cooperation towards making the peaceful demonstration a success will highly be appreciated,” concludes the letter.

This even as City Hall slapped the opposition with a Sh250, 000 bill for unauthorized use of the Uhuru Park grounds during their Monday demonstration.

Monday’s demonstration in Nairobi, which were largely peaceful, saw Cord leaders and their followers converging at Uhuru Park for an impromptu rally during which Cord leader, Raila Odinga, briefly addressed the crowd.

Driver survives grisly road accident on Thika Superhighway

The driver of a vehicle which was involved in a grisly road crash on Thursday night along the busy Thika Superhighway miraculously survived the accident.

Photos taken by witnesses, which were widely shared on social media, showed a white Toyota Fielder vertically impaled on one of the barriers along the highway.

But somehow the driver of the vehicle reportedly escaped the accident and was rushed to Neema Hospital by Good Samaritans.

A motorist who happened to be driving on the highway at the time of the accident, recounted how he and other witnesses helped the victim.

In a Facebook post, the motorist, Tosh Ruchiam, described the accident as one that he will never forget.

“Tonight I have found myself in the middle of an incident that I will remember for ages. Main thing I’ve taken away from tonight is that I’ve seen two sides of Kenyans tonight,” he wrote on Facebook.

The motorist went on to recount his experience, describing it as both good and bad.

UNCONSCIOUS DRIVER

In his account, Mr Ruchiam recalls how heard a loud crash and screeching of metal, then seeing traffic slowing down ahead of him. As he approached the spot, he says, he saw a white Toyota Fielder vertically impaled on the barrier on the other side of the road.

“It looks bizarre. Worse still, the car has caught fire,” recounts Mr Ruchiam, who together with other witnesses helped in pulling out the unconscious driver who was trapped inside the car.

“I was amazed how guys in mere seconds coordinated to scoop handfuls of sand nearby to put out the fire as others joined hands to break in the driver’s window and pull the door open,” he wrote.

Ruchiam said the unconscious driver was bleeding from the head and had a torn lip but was lucky to be alive and breathing at the time he was pulled out of the mangled vehicle.

Its a rush against time as Mr Ruchiam offers to drive the victim, albeit on the wrong side of the road, to Neema Hospital, where the victim arrives and at first is unresponsive but later starts mumbling incoherently.

Medical personnel at Neema Hospital later inform Mr Ruchiam and the other rescuers that the facility doesn’t have the capacity to handle the victim and that he would have to be transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital.

However, from his experience, Mr Ruchiam also bemoans the Kenyan culture of witnesses and motorists milling around accident scenes without offering help or simply taking photos and videos.

“You’re a driver as well, next time it could be you, what if everyone drives off and you don’t make it to hospital on time,” he poses.

A British man, who was arrested after a woman died at his residence in Karen from gunshot wounds, has been charged in court with murder.

Richard Alden, 53, who appeared before High Court Judge Stella Mutuku, will be held in custody until June 16 when his application for bail will be heard.

He denied killing Grace Wangeci Kinyanjui, 42, at Windy Ridge Road, Karen on June 4.

Initially, Mr Alden had told the police that the woman accidentally shot herself with his Glock pistol but detectives have since ruled out this theory and are instead pressing murder charges against the accused.

In an affidavit served to the prosecution in court on Friday morning, the suspect applied for bond as he “is father of three children and has an ailing mother who depends on him.”

BOND APPLICATION

“I am presently facing allegations of murder and however grave the allegations may be it cannot be a basis to deny me my basic fundamental rights and freedoms as enshrined in the constitution,” Mr Alden said in a sworn affidavit.

“My family solely depends on me and they will suffer if I continue to be detained,” Mr Alden further stated.

Defence lawyer Cliff Ombeta said Mr Alden has been in custody since June 4 when he was arrested and asked the court to urgently consider his client’s bond application.

Mr Ombeta said his client is willing to abide by any conditions the court may peg on the bond terms.

The prosecution told the court that Mr Alden had earlier on been taken for psychiatric examination and declared fit to stand trial.

Police launched a murder inquiry after doctors reportedly established that the deceased’s injuries suggested that she might have been assaulted.

The owner of the matatu which was set ablaze during anti-IEBC protests and other business owners have moved to court seeking to stop Cord from holding further protests.

Agnes Macharia and Prime City Transporters Sacco have sued Cord leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula.

They also want the Cord Principals compelled to compensate Ms Macharia besides an order being issued stopping them from holding further demonstrations.

They claimed that her matatu driver and conductor were also beaten up by Cord supporter during the June 6 demonstrations in Nairobi.

COUNTER-DEMO

They argued that there is need to ensure security of their property as well as lives hence the need for the demonstrations to be permanently halted.

On Wednesday, matatu operators held a counter-demo on the streets of Nairobi to protest the burning of the Kayole matatu and destruction of other property during the anti-IEBC demonstrations by Cord followers.

The demonstrators marched to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Harambee House office where they handed over a petition before proceeding to Mr Odinga’s Upper Hill office where they damped the shell of the burnt up matatu.

Former presidential hopeful, Martha Karua, was on Thursday evening the subject of online ridicule for donning fishnet stockings with a lengthy skirt.

Ms Karua, who appeared on NTV for an interview on the overhaul of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), spotted black ankle boots and stockings.

Her appearance in the attire saw fashionistas pointing out the politician’s inappropriate style of dressing with messages on Twitter.

Ordinarily, lengthy skirts and dresses don’t require stockings but if someone’s preference is to fully cover up, the stockings ought to match the skin color.

Furthermore, fishnet stockings and boots of a design similar to Ms Karua’s are mostly for the younger women who are on a casual attire.

Such were the sentiments expressed by Kenyans on Twitter regarding Ms Karua’s dressing.

Why a nagging wife is good for your health

A nagging woman clings to her partner.

There is one character trait that the Nairobi man hates in a woman – nagging. But findings of an interesting new study however suggest that the Nairobi man may be backing up the wrong tree.

According to scientific research by sociologists from Michigan State University in the US, a nagging wife is good for a man’s health.

This quashes that popular belief that marriage, because of the stresses that come with it, is detrimental to a man’s health.

For the study, the researchers looked into the lives of 1218 married study subjects over a period of five years. All the study subjects were between the ages of 57 and 85 at the beginning of the study.

The aim of the study was to look into the effect of marital quality on the risk and management of diabetes.

Men in unhappy marriages were found to be less likely to develop diabetes than men in happy marriages. When the former group of men developed diabetes, they were found to be able to manage it better.

STRESS LEVELS

Unfortunately though, while nagging may make a man keener on taking his diabetes medication, the researchers found that it increases the strain of a marriage. This nagging environment was also found to increase a man’s stress levels over time.

For women however, being in a happy marriage lowered their chances of developing diabetes. A nagging husband on the other had heightened their chances of developing diabetes.

The researchers argue that nagging wives are also likely to pester their husbands in regard to their health. She will nag you to eat better, to exercise and if you are unwell, to take your medication.

Women on the other hand were found to be more sensitive to the quality of a relationship and thus more likely to be affected healthwise when a relationship goes sideways.

If these findings, which have been published in the Journals of Gerontology Series B: Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences, are anything to go by, then it is safe to conclude that nagging is caring.

Three suspected gangsters were shot dead in Nairobi’s Mowlem area in Dandora on Friday morning after robbing and raping a woman as her husband watched.

The slain thugs are suspected to be part of gang of burglars who were on a robbing spree before residents raised alarm.

Buruburu DCIO, Jeremiah Ikiao, told Nairobi News that they were looking for two accomplices of the killed suspects who are said to have escaped with gunshot wounds.

“The three were shot after residents raised alarm and police who were on patrol gave chase and managed to gun them down,” Mr Ikiao said.

According to the DCIO, a pistol with two rounds of ammunition and a spent cartridge were recovered from the slain suspects.

The police also recovered a TV, gas cylinder and other household items which the suspects had robbed the residents.

ANOTHER INCIDENT

In a separate incident also in Dandora, a woman and a man were shot dead by police on Thursday morning after they attacked and robbed a cigarettes salesman in Buruburu.

While confirming the incident, Mr Ikiao said the two were pursued by police officers after the victim reported the matter.

Mr Ikiao said that the two had robbed the salesman of his cigarettes and Sh40,000 in cash.

“The victim reported being robbed and our officers began a search that ended up in a bar where the suspects had spread out the stolen cigarettes ready for sale. It was there that a shootout ensued leading to the death of the robbers,” he said.

A revolver, three rounds of ammunition and the cigarettes were recovered but the cash wasn’t recovered.

CITY GIRL: I am tired of working under men; time to change positions

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton celebrates on stage during her primary night event at the Duggal Greenhouse, Brooklyn Navy Yard on June 7, 2016 in New York. AFP PHOTO

Something remarkably historic happened this week. Hillary Clinton clinched the Democratic presidential nomination, making her the first woman in 227 years.

As she inches closer to being first female president of the US, the magnitude of this moment in history is not lost on me.

This much I know; Hillary would not have won if she did not have the support of women around here and across America.

May Hillary’s victory be a resounding bell to all the women in the world that they can never and will never progress unless they have the support of their fellow women.

But I am reminded of a bitter truth. It is against the nature of women to support each other. Women are generally not nice to each other. Let us not lie to each other here with all our hugs, air kisses and surprise baby showers. The way we are wired, cultured, socialised and brought up, is to compete and compare against the next woman and show her who is boss.

FEMALE US PRESIDENT

Look at men. Men are cool. Easy. They bump each other’s cars and two weekends later, they are ‘boys’. They defend each other so fiercely to each other’s girlfriends and spouses, and hardly tell on each other.

I am sure you’ve heard this joke of a man who failed to come home one night and when the wife called 10 of his ‘boys’, five said he had slept over at their houses, three said he was still there, the other two confirmed they had dropped him home that night, even if none of them had seen the man that week. That is loyalty, right there.

But not so with women. And this is why it has taken the world a whopping 227 years to realise the possibility of a female US president.

I know there are other factors such as it was only until 1920 when women in the US were allowed to vote, but you’ll agree with me that one of the primary impediments that took Hillary this long is simple — women simply do not watch out for each other.

Mean girls morph into meaner women and “queen-bee” bosses. We spend hours poring over social media — Facebook and Instagram — stalking our friends, to jeer at whoever is doing better than you and secretly rejoice at one who is not so successful. Why are we like this?

MEN TAKE OVER

You’d think that with all our fancy degrees, this would change, especially in the corporate world. That women would look out for each other in the corporate world and help each other up, but that’s just City Girl dreaming.

As we are busy tearing each other down and plotting each other’s downfall, the men take over — even if we are more qualified and experienced because we simply cannot stand a woman who seems better than us. Truth.

Of course, I am not blind to the fact that there are some women mentoring others but this is the exception, not the rule.

Women need to grow up and stop being so petty, so malicious and so cantankerous. So what if there is a younger woman in your office who needs help? Help her!

We must spread this cheer from coast to coast and learn from the US that you lose nothing from helping a younger, weaker, less-advantaged woman.

The path has already been beaten for us, this thing is doable. I don’t know about you, but I am tired of working under men, it is time to change positions.

Controversial lawyer and author, Miguna Miguna, has taken a swipe at Siaya Senator, James Orengo for his ‘poor’ English.

One given to expressing his views regardless of whom they might offend, Mr Miguna, in tweet on Friday corrected the senator’s English and advised him to spend time reading.

The senator, who like Miguna, is a reputed lawyer had tweeted to inform his followers that he was among people nominated by Cord to a Joint Select Committee that will deliberate on the current standoff between the opposition on one side and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on the other side.

“Cord has nominated myself and Hon. Eseli Simiyu to lead a committee to chart the way forward on IEEBC in 24 hours.”

To which Miguna responded with a quick 101 ‘correct English’ lesson with some advice to boot.

Miguna, a one-time advisor of Cord leader Raila Odinga, is best known for authoring Peeling Back the Mask: A Quest for Justice in Kenya, a highly critical book on the former Prime Minister.

Ladies, eight things to do to get the relationship you want

$

Couple-date

Healthy relationships are made up of about 10 percent of luck and 90 percent of hard work. Yes, getting the relationship you want is pegged almost entirely on what you are willing to do to get it.

Here are things that a woman who is searching or who is already in a relationship can do to get that picture perfect relationship:

1. Become an expert on him – To get a great relationship with a man, you will need to know him in and out. This means that instead of guessing what he is feeling or thinking, you will totally be in sync with him. Learn the things that make him tick, how he reacts to things, learn his cues when he wants to be left alone.

2. Solidify your friendship – How about first strengthening the friendship that you and your partner share before working on the romance side of it? A deeper friendship with your partner will count for a deeper relationship bond.

3. Say what you want – What a lot of women don’t know is that to get many good things, including a good relationship, all you need to do is ask. If you want a relationship where you go out more or spend more time together, say it.

4. Live in the now – It is a competitive world where everybody you meet is competing with another. In this spirit of competition, it is easy to start living in the future. If you are looking for a solid relationship however, you must not ignore the now. Joy can be found in the little moments that you share in the now. These shared moments are a strong enough foundation for the future.

5. Focus on the things you can change – When you enter a relationship, focus only on those things that you can change, not those that you can’t.

6. Find comfort in being alone – To get the relationship you want, you must start by getting a good relationship with yourself. Learn to enjoy your own company, to be okay with being alone. Only when you are happy and whole alone can you be happy with someone else.

7. Go to bed angry – Yes, sometimes that phrase that a couple should never go to bed angry with each other doesn’t work. The truth is having a fight with your love interest when you are tired or very angry will not work. Sometimes it is okay to take some time out to cool down so you can revisit the issue when both of you have a better perspective on things.

8. See him for who he really is – In a lot of relationship, a woman will see a man for the idea of him that she has on her mind. A relationship on this basis is a superficial one. If you truly want to connect with a man, then you need to see him for who he truly is and to accept this side of him.

Nothing brings the city of Mombasa alive like the month of Ramadan. There is a side that comes alive in the vibrant coastal city that has been shaped by age old customs and centuries of traditions.

Ramadan is one of the most important months in every Muslim’s calendar. Its during this month that Muslims deny themselves food and drink from dawn to dusk during a period of spiritual reflection. The fasting is observed by Muslims worldwide.

During the month of Ramadan, the coastal city of Mombasa literally comes alive. Different variety of food and snacks are sold alongside roads, mainly near mosques. Most shops and cafeteria also reschedule their hours of opening from day to night.

Muslims are expected to show self-restraint through fasting by denying themselves food, drink and sexual indulgence from dawn to dusk.

Family gatherings outside houses at time of Iftar (breaking the fast) are a common scene during Ramadan in Mombasa. However, with time this tradition is slowly being phased out as more families opt for meals indoors for security reasons.

COASTAL SNACKS

“In the past, it was a tradition for most families to have their meals outside and share food with friends, neighbors and passersby during breaking of the fast. But the threat of terrorism and the ever rising insecurity have scared many people,” said Abdurrahman Sherrif, a dweller of Mombasa town.

Another Mombasa dweller, Mohammed Said, who operates a Tuk tuk says the nights are more overwhelming than the days especially near the end of the holy month.

“If you want to experience the tradition and culture of Mombasa, Ramadan is the best time to do so. Most activity is shifted to the night which I think is the best time because its much cooler,” said Mohammed.

Food vendors trading in coastal snacks at affordable prices are also a common sight from Markiti to Bondeni. Its a practice Mombasa residents call Al-Arsa, meaning varieties of food in Arabic.

And it is only during Ramadan that the food vendors come out in large numbers. People eat various coastal traditional meals, such as Muhogo wa nazi (cassava in coconut) mbaazi ya tuwi ya nazi, mahamri and chapati, tende (dates), mkate wa sinia, kaimati among others.

Over the years Mombasa has gone through numerous changes and facelifts but what really doesn’t change is its rich tradition during the holy month of Ramadan.

The late Ms Janet Asunah who was found dead at their family home Kizingo, Mombasa County.

Detectives have launched investigations into the mysterious killing of a 26-year-old model, whose body was found at her home in Kizingo, Mombasa County.

Police officers said they were following a lead after they collected blood samples from a wall at Ms Janet Asunah’s family home.

“We collected blood samples from the scene and we are looking for fingerprints that will help in the investigations,” Mombasa Urban Police boss Lucas Ogara told the Saturday Nation.

Ms Asunah’s body was found on the floor of her bedroom by her mother, Ms Pamela Anyango, on Tuesday evening, according to a relative, who spoke at the family home. She added that the mother of one appears to have been strangled by her attacker.

Relatives said Ms Asunah had on Tuesday morning dropped off her four-year-old daughter at school but did not pick her up in the evening.

They said Ms Anyango, who was at work, got worried when she was informed by the school that her granddaughter had not been picked up hours later.

She headed to the school and collected the child. On reaching home, she found her daughter dead.
