June 6: Kenya adds 126 new coronavirus cases

President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced that 126 more people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 2,600.

Four more people have also died within the last 24 hours, raising the total number of fatalities to 83.

President Kenyatta says that if the government did not take the interventions it did then the infection curve would have skyrocketed.

“Fellow Kenyans lets speak truth to each other, had we not taken the stringent measures in March then the coronavirus infections would have picked to 800,000 people by July 30 this year. But because we took interventions early we have recorded only 2,600 infections with 83 deaths,” President Kenyatta said.

“As we have seen in the case that one infected person has the potential to infect two people this number would have 2.4 million people in 21 days. By the end of August, this year had we not taken the actions that we had taken approximately 75,000 Kenyans would have lost their lives from the disease.”

He added: “So, therefore, fellow Kenyans if this is the worst-case scenario we wanted to know what the other scenarios look like ….. So if today we put all the necessary interventions and relaxed these by only 20 percent what would this look like. According to the experts relaxing the interventions by 20 percent will lead to 200, 000 infections and 30,000 deaths by December 2020.”

Wema Sepetu addresses rumours of secret wedding

Tanzania actress Wema Sepetu has come out to deny reports that she secretly got married a couple of days ago.

Last week, Tanzanian social media was awash with reports that the former Miss Tanzania had secretly walked down the aisle in a colourful Islamic wedding.

The rumour started doing rounds after Wema uploaded pictures of her on Instagram dressed like an Islamic bride with her hands well decorated in Henna painting, which suggests one was about to get married.

Majority of Wema’s followers trusted the reports when her ex-boyfriend’s Diamond Platnumz cousin and DJ Rommy Jones, commented on the photos congratulating her on the milestone.

Wema has now come out to clarify that she did not secretly wed as reported.

However, she noted that she was overwhelmed with hundreds of congratulatory messages and comments she received.

“Nimeona kwa kweli ni jinsi gani watu walivyo na upendo na mimi kwa kusema tu naolewa, hivyo naomba Mungu azipokee dua zao. Mimi ninachokiamini jambo hilo litafanyika siku za usoni lakini kwa uwezo wa aliye juu na si mwingine,” Wema clarified.

Nairobi News understands that the wedding photo shoot was for commercial purposes.

The former Miss Tanzania recent sentiments show a change of heart towards marriage. Last year the 31-year-old said she had lost hope of ever getting married.

Then, Wema noted that she had lost interest in walking down the aisle, having been unlucky to get married when she was younger.

For over a decade, Wema’s love life has always been a trending topic in Tanzania’s showbiz world.

Over the years, Wema has dated several Tanzanian celebrities including Diamond, the late Steven Kanumba, Mr Blue, Idris Sutan and politicians but the relationships have never been survived the test of time.

Schools to reopen from September – Uhuru

Learners will stay longer at home after President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday announced that formal learning in all levels of education will resume from September 2020.

In his address to the Nation from State House-Nairobi, the president said he had directed the Ministry of Education in liaison with Ministry of Health to come up with modalities that will result in students resuming studies beginning September 2020.

“Following stakeholders’ consultation in the education sector, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education to jointly issue guidelines on a gradual return to normalcy in the education sector from September 1,” the president said.

The Head of State directed the Education Ministry to publish the new academic calendar by mid-August.

President Kenyatta said the Government had arrived at that decision to avert a possible spike in the number of Covid-19 infections in Kenya.

On Friday, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha hinted that schools will not be opened any time soon.

“The ministry will advise the level of preparedness that will be required of all stakeholders involved in the running of schools and teacher training institutions,” he said.

Magoha had set June 4 as the tentative opening date pending the advice of the committee and the Ministry of Health.

But rising Covid-19 cases saw the CS change tune on May 28, saying he will not gamble with the lives of learners.

“A child who is at home and alive is better than one who tried to do exams and died,” Magoha said while receiving the preliminary report of the committee.

The CS urged the team to prioritise the safety of learners and teachers in making its final recommendations.

How did you see our memes yet you left Twitter in 2019? KOT ask Uhuru

Kenyans on Twitter (KOT) are wondering how President Uhuru Kenyatta knew what was happening on Twitter yet his account was deactivated in March 2019.

On Saturday, while addressing the nation on the way forward on the fight against Covid-19, President Kenyatta said that he has seen all the memes that KOT had created in anticipation of being free from the dusk to dawn curfew and cessation of movement.

“Kwa hivyo wakenya wenzangu twajuwa ni mdaa mgumu, nimeona meme mingi mumetuma huko, sijui freedom day, independence day. Hii sio mambo ya independence ni mambo ya maisha jameni, hatufanyi hii kuumiza mtu yeyote. Tunafanya hii kuhakikisha tumelinda maisha ya wananchi wetu,” President Kenyatta said.

In bouts of chuckles, he said that it was important for Kenyans to wait for another time “kukula hepi (merry-making)” so as to save lives.

He said that he is one of the people who was advocating for the containment measures to be relaxed at 100 percent.

However, he noted, it would be foolish of him not to listen to the experts’ advice.

“Jamani afadhali uwe hai ndio uweze kukula hio hepi unatafuta lakini ukiishia hio happy uliokula siku moja ndio itakupeleka kwa kaburi sioni haja wenzangu tutulie nafasi bado itakuja,” he said.

“Mimi mwenyewe nilikuwa nadhania ya kwamba tutafunguwa na Zaidi yay ale tumefanya hapa leo. Lakini ni mjinga ndio ambaye haskizi kutoka kwa wataalamu wake. Na wataalamu wetu wametuambia kufunguwa ni makosa,” President Kenyatta explained.

But, how exactly does the Head of State come to know all these. KOT seems to have decided to put on their detective hats to find out whether Mr Kenyatta is operating undercover with another account.

Below are some of their comments:

Here’s Uhuru’s directive to Matiang’i on reopening of worship places

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday gave the ministries of Interior and Health seven days to work out modalities and protocols of re-opening of the places of worship.

Religious organisations had formally written to the Head of State asking for a review of the measures and promising to adhere to the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.

On Friday, Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and his Health counterpart Mutahi Kagwe met with religious leaders ahead of the handover of the report from the National Coordination Committee on Coronavirus to discuss how to proceed with religious activities in the event the government agrees to relax some of its guidelines.

“…the Ministries of Interior and Health, within seven days, constitutes an Inter-Faith Council, to work out modalities and protocols of re-opening of the places of worship,” he said.

The government in March suspended all public gatherings, sporting events, open-air religious meetings and all events that are of a huge public nature after the first coronavirus case in the country was confirmed.

The issue of churches remaining open is at the forefront of the global battle against Covid-19, especially after what happened in South Korea.

Kenyans react after Uhuru ends Eastleigh, Old town lockdown

Kenyans on Saturday evening reacted differently following an executive order by President Uhuru Kenyatta who lifted cessation of movement order into and out of Eastleigh and Old Town as from 4am June 7, 2020.

For over a month, businesses in Eastleigh had been on standstill after an executive order banned entry and exit due to the then rising number of people who were testing positive for Covid-19.

Today, Kenyans reacted differently to the end of cessation.

Pumwani Hospital boss Geoffrey Mosiria said that the end of Cessation was timely especially for locals in Eastleigh.

“I support the move because locking them in one place was really affecting them,” he told Nairobi News on phone.

Betty Kyallo now changes tune on Dennis Okari

In a case of Saul turned Paul, media personality Betty Kyallo has praised her ex-husband, NTV news anchor Dennis Okari, saying he is a wonderful father.

The two seem to have patched up things and resolved to co-parent amicably, six months after NTV news anchor Ken Mijungu accused Kyallo of portraying Okari as an irresponsible father.

GOOD TERMS

She revealed the latest development on Friday during an interview on YouTube with comedian and radio presenter Jalang’o.

The former K24 news anchor revealed that the two have since mended fences and are now on speaking terms as they focus on the most important person in their lives: their daughter Ivanna.

“Right now I’ve grown so much…the person who used to be Betty two or three years ago is not the same person I am today. There are things that we came to realize are very important about our lives; that it’s not just always about us as adults,” she said.

According to Kyallo, they are all including Okari’s current wife Naomi Joy, their family are in very good terms.

“So, yes, we are on very good terms with both him and his family and his wife…and we’re making sure that Ivanna is getting the love that she deserves; daddy and mummy’s love. It is so important to nurture that relationship between a dad and his little girl,” she added.

BESTIES

She said that Okari and his daughter have reconnected and now are besties.

“Right now they’re besties. I call her and she’s like ‘I’m with Daddy,’ and I feel good. That’s exactly how it’s supposed to be. He’s doing an amazing job and we’re co-parenting,” she said.

The ‘Flair by Betty’ boss and Okari differences came to the limelight in December when she took to social media and detailed her daughter’s long ailment and elected to thank several people including her colleagues, doctors, her daughter’s teachers, and friends for helping her out during the troubling times, but not her ex-husband.

Her narration stirred mixed reactions and it was Okari’s exclusion that particularly irked his close friend and fellow NTV anchor Mijungu. He said he had driven Okari to the hospital even on the day his daughter was admitted.

Last month, Kyallo was put on the spot by her social media followers after she uploaded a video on her YouTube channel in which she said her daughter, Ivanna, was preparing to go hang out with her father, Okari.

How M-Pesa agents are losing their cash to criminals in Nairobi

On May 23, 2020 at 3pm, a man dressed in a maroon t-shirt walked into a supermarket known as Bazar Minimart that also runs an M-Pesa shop, swapped a mobile phone which had money with a similar one and walked away.

CCTV footage obtained from the shop, showed that the man had visited the supermarket earlier in the day before he left and only returned after changing his clothes.

SECURITY CODE

On his first visit to the supermarket, the man, whose name as registered in his sim card is Kevin Lee Foster, arrived at the business outlet dressed in a green t-shirt and a red jacket and did two transactions.

Mr Ali Bishar, the owner of the shop, told Citizen TV that on his first visit the man’s main aim was to get the pin number of the phone that the M-Pesa agent uses in doing transactions.

“He actually got the security code at that time because he did a Sh500 transaction without leaving the shop but just moving around and did another transaction of Sh50. It seems he was checking the password and in the second round confirmed that he had gotten it right,” Mr Bishar said.

On his second round, man’s accomplice, a woman dressed in a black top, is seen pulling the attendant aside and this gives the man room to swap the phones.

Mr Bashir said that he lost Sh29,000 in the theft and efforts to nab the man has been futile to date.

He says by the time, they alerting M-Pesa about the theft, the man had already transferred the money to a woman identified as Martha Mukui.

SWAPPED PHONES

“By the time I was alerting Safaricom about what was going on it was too late,” he said.

Mr Bashir further said that the phone the suspect swapped with his phone had a striking resemblance with the one he was using for M-Pesa transactions and upon checking it out he realised that it belonged to yet another M-Pesa agent.

The agent also lost Sh30,000 to the suspect before he left the phone in the last shop.

The money was also sent to the same phone number belonging to Martha Mugui.

This, it has emerged, is how M-Pesa operators in Kilimani and Kileleshwa have been losing money to this criminal ring.

Police in Kileleshwa said that investigations into such incidents are ongoing and that they will soon catch up with the criminals.

“We are also asking anyone who has ever fallen victim of this gang to come forward and make a report so that action is taken against them,” an investigating officer told Nairobi News.

A police officer who once served as former President Mwai Kibaki’s escort has died.

Mr Wachira Mathenge who was serving as a Commissioner of Police in charge of logistic in Eastern Region, Embu died on Friday, June 5, 2020.

A police report filed at Chaka Police Post in Nyeri County under OB number 2/05/06/2020 stated that the officer collapsed abruptly in his house in Chaka at 9pm and was declared dead on arrival at Outspan Hospital in Nyeri County.

According to the police, the deceased was later transferred to the hospital’s mortuary.

“The cause of death has not yet been established but it is highly suspected to be a heart attack as he had not complained of any illness before collapsing,” the police report read in part.

A firearm – an Austria of serial number 884 and 16 rounds of 9mm – were recovered from the officer’s house and handed over to Narumoru Police Station.

Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday mourned the officer saying that he was a dedicated and exceptional officer.

Sponsors now all over Lady Jay Dee’s hot step-daughter after dad invites them over

Malkia Karen, the daughter of Lady Jay Dee’s ex-husband, Gardner G Habash, has revealed that ‘sponsors’ have been bugging her ever since her father said that he would wish to see her get married or enter into a relationship with an older man.

Gardner, who is a renowned Tanzanian radio presenter, made the remarks in January during an interview with vlogger Zamaradi Mkitema.

SEDUCTION

During the interview, Gardner was accompanied by his 25-year-old daughter.

Now Karen says ever since her dad made the sentiments, she has not had peace of mind as her DMs on social media accounts are filled with seductive messages from the sponsors. Some have even been calling her directly.

Karen says she wouldn’t mind dating a rich guy, but he doesn’t have to be a sugar daddy, as her father suggested.

“Ile kauli ya baba ni tofauti kabisa, kuna mtu mwingine anaweza akawa na pesa ila sio babu, sio sugar daddy, mimi siwataki. Kauli baba alisema vile sababu ni mzazi na hawezi kunitakia mabaya,” Karen told Bongo 5.

When he made the controversial remarks, Gardener’s reasoning was very simple. He argued that with his daughter venturing into music, she would need a financially stable man to support her through her newfound path.

The radio presenter stated that he has been bankrolling his daughter as far as her music career is concerned and felt that if she was to find a guy then he should be an older man of means.

MUSIC CAREER

The 45-year-old, went on to argue that Karen’s male age mates cannot afford to properly take care of her since they are also just getting started in life, just like her.

Gardner sired Karen, his only child, with another woman before getting into a relationship with Lady Jay Dee.

They married in 2005 but split after 11 years, finalizing their divorce in February 2016.

Lady Jay Dee was instrumental in Karen’s upbringing, playing the step-mother’s role until she was all grown up. Little is known about Karen’s biological mother.

Jay Dee and Gardener didn’t have a child of their own during their marriage.

Karen launched her music career in March 2018 and has so for released a number of singles.

Kenyan rapper Juliani, has said he relates very well with his ex-girlfriend actress Brenda Wairimu and that they are on talking terms.

After dating for more than eight years, Juliani and Brenda broke up about three years ago, but they have remained friends.

CO-PARENTING

The two have a five-year-old daughter, Amor Njeri, whom they are co-parenting.

There have been rumours though that their relationship had deteriorated, an issue Juliani dismissed, saying that co-parenting with Brenda has never been better.

“She is the mother of my child and I can’t take that away from her. She has been really helpful in ensuring that I spend time with my daughter as I try my level best to provide. I may not be together with her in a relationship or romantically but as the mother of my child I respect her so much. Besides, she is also a good person” Juliani said.

Juliani went on to reveal that they made the decision not to reveal their daughter’s face to the public, especially on social media, to protect her and themselves as parents from cyberbullying.

SINGLE

Following their breakup, Juliani says he chose to remain single and the situation remains unchanged.

As for Brenda, she has been linked to fellow actor Ephy Saint with whom they play boyfriend and girlfriend on TV drama series Monica.

Word has it that they have brought to real life their screen chemistry.

However a few months ago, Brenda denied dating Saint but confirmed that she is in a relationship with someone else.

I’m not a trained journalist, but I had a great voice and the camera loved me

As CNN turned 40 this week, Nairobi correspondent Farai Sevenzo, who has had more than two decades covering Sub-Saharan Africa as a documentary filmmaker and broadcaster in radio and TV spoke to Nairobi News, on how he ended up working for the biggest broadcasters in the world despite not being a trained journalist.

Nairobi News: You are a filmmaker and journalist, which came first?

Sevenzo: I was a filmmaker before I became a journalist. I was two years out of the UK’s National Film and Television School where I studied writing and directing for for years before I became a radio journalist covering Africa.

Given a chance, of the two which one would you drop in a heartbeat and why?

Neither. Africa has always been at the heart of my creative and journalism work and the two feed off each other.

Born in Zimbabwe, you left collage, the continent and now you cover Sub-Saharan Africa, what brought you back?

I have always come back. Africa is what I’ve always been interested in. I even came to Kenya after two massive bombs took out US Embassies in Dar and Nairobi to talk to survivors and gauge the mood. I’ve covered elections in Zambia, Zimbabwe – AIDS in Malawi, the trial of Foday Sankoh in Sierra Leone. Bakili Muluzi then president of Malawi gave my film crew and I a lift on his plane to attend Mzee Nyerere’s funeral. Always on a plane, always headed to an African city.

Professionally you are not a journalist, what pushed you to get into the profession?

You’re right. I was never trained as a journalist, but I was curious about my continent and could tell a good story and interpret the facts. Plus I had a great voice and the camera loved me.

You’ve been doing this for more than two decades, what has been the best and worst experience?

Difficult to say. I tend to treat the best and the worst just the same – it’s a developing continent full of excesses of cruelty and kindness. I spoke to the survivors of the Lord Resistance Army in northern Uganda once and it was harrowing. I’ve also seen much violence in African elections. And incredible determination by African people to improve themselves despite their politicians failings. It’s best not to dwell on best and worst and keep my sanity.

Has social media affected the way people receive their news and how has it affected you?

I’m old fashioned in this respect and tend to read real newspapers and I’m rarely active on social media. But yes, it has changed the way ordinary people view the news and has led to erroneous belief by some that a few characters typed on Twitter makes them reporters.

Which stories would you say if I got a call now I will pack, go and redo it again?

None. I’m confident my teams and I told the story well the first time and history will back us up.

Memorable story that has stayed with you since you started this journey?

Too many to mention. Covering Cyclone Idai in Beira Mozambique brought the reality of climate change right up close for me, but there have been so many others.

CNN is such a big and influential media organization. It must be very challenging to work for such an institution?

I don’t think it’s a challenge. I believe I belong amongst the best journalists in the world. This is a collection of professionals from all nationalities who have worked for some of the best media outlets in the world and they’ve made me feel I belong. My CNN colleagues and I have won some of the most prestigious awards in journalism and look at the current stories we’re covering – I’d say this network is at the forefront of that coverage with our colleagues being arrested live on air and our anchors covering every angle to the debacle in the States over George Floyd. The challenge is to keep doing it, come rain or shine, war or peace.

What will you remember most about your stint in Kenya?

Before the lockdown and Coronavirus, there isn’t a corner of Nairobi I didn’t have a beer in. As an Arsenal fan I watched my football in Kinoo, Mathare, Kariobangi, Dandora – all the places not even Kenyan journalists hang out in. I’ll remember the welcome of the poorest, the generosity of those who truly belief that there is nothing like too little to share.

Zimbabwe has not been faring very well in the world media recently. What kind of politics is going on down there and how are journalists affected?

Journalists have always been treated with disdain in some countries, and on balance, the country of my birth has been no exception. But it is also fair to say that the world media has not treated the issues at stake in Zimbabwe – land ownership mainly – with as much balance as they ought to. But then speaking as a reporter it is difficult to strike a balance when your country men and women are being abducted and brutalised throughout successive regimes.

What documentaries are you working on at the moment?

None. I feel every piece I do for television is a kind of documentary. But I am returning to my first love of writing screenplays. Africa and the world have changed so much over the last decade, I’m creating characters to reflect those changes in various stories.

How partying crowd that was waiting for ‘good news’ from Uhuru got arrested

Police in Komarock estate on Saturday afternoon arrested 15 people who were attending a party as they awaited what they referred to as ‘good news’ from President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The arrest comes at a time when the government has banned all social gatherings as a measure to contain the spread of Coronavirus.

PARTYING

Nairobi County police boss Philip Ndolo said that the group was nabbed for going against presidential orders and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.

“People should follow the guidelines issued by the National Government, failure to which police will take stern action against those who break the law,” he said.

In an amateur video that was shared by officers, the group, that comprised young men and women, was also in possession of several rolls of bhang.

According to the officers, they received a tip-off from members of the public who said that the group had assembled as from Saturday morning and they kept shouting that President Kenyatta should lift all restrictions issued related to Covid-19 pandemic.

ARRESTED

In the video, the group is seen sampling alcoholic drinks and nyama choma, without observing social distancing in their seating arrangement.

The group was later escorted to Komarock Police Station where they are currently being held awaiting to be arraigned in court on Monday.

They were escorted to the station in three Toyota probox.

Give us the trophy, or nullify the season, Gor Mahia coach now demands

Gor Mahia coach Steven Polack has called on the Kenyan Premier League to either hand his club the league title or nullify the season.

Polack said KPL should not adopt a wait and see tactic for another one month but should immediately decide the fate of this season.

GIVE US THE TITLE

The outspoken tactician made it clear that he is through with this season, saying with 30 day extension of dawn to dusk curfew and cessation of movement in and out of Nairobi, it is impossible for the remaining 10 matches to be played.

“I have washed my hands on this season because it will be impossible to complete the remaining matches. As KPL meets this week, my proposal to them is to either cancel the season and hand over the title to us or nullify it,” Polack said.

Polack insisted that it is only fair to declare Gor Mahia champions, but he would embrace any decision, even if it proposes otherwise.

Gor Mahia leads the KPL log on 54 points after 23 rounds of matches, with second-placed Kakamega Homeboyz seven points adrift from 22 matches.

“The remaining matches cannot be completed in late July yet the new season will start by late August. My focus is now on next season and not the remaining 10 matches,” he said.

NATIONWIDE CURFEW

President Uhuru Kenyatta made the announcement extending the curfew on Saturday afternoon but changed the timings from the initial 7pm-5am to 9pm-4am.

KPL indefinitely suspended the league as a way of complying with the government directive prohibiting public gatherings after the first case of coronavirus was reported in the country on March 13.

Polack acknowledged whichever decision KPL arrives at, it will evoke positive and negative reactions from clubs, more so those at the top and bottom of the table.

However, he said as the body tasked with making decisions on such matters, KPL should not fear any backlash.

SUPREMACY BATTLES

“They should not fear or engage in supremacy battles. What the president has done is for the safety of Kenyans, footballers included. KPL shouldn’t wait for another 30 days but should come out and give direction,” he added.

On Tuesday KPL hinted that league matches could resume if the government relaxed restrictions on movements. However, the situation remains the same since Nairobi and Mombasa counties are still locked.

Almost more than half of KPL teams are based in Nairobi with Bandari being the only coastal team.

Next week’s governing council meeting to be chaired by KPL chairman Ambrose Rachier, who is also Gor Mahia chairman, and representatives from all the 17 clubs is expected to seal the fate of this season.

In another arrest, 15 people were arrested on Saturday afternoon at Komarock estate while partying as they awaited what they referred to as ‘good news’ from President Uhuru Kenyatta.

All the suspects arrested for defying restrictions set in place by the government and Ministry of Health will be arraigned in court on Monday.

Giraffe Manor on the receiving end after ‘re-opening for Kenyans’

Giraffe Manor, one of the most exclusive hotels in the upmarket Karen neighbourhood, has come under fire from a section of Kenyans after it announced that it is re-opening after closing due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Those who are bashing the facility seem to be angered by the fact that the hotel that previously shunned the locals, is only now opening its doors for them since there are no more foreign tourists flying into the country due to the coronavirus.

The backlash has come from Kenyans who recounted discriminatory experiences at the hotel due to policies which are seen to be disadvantageous to Africans.

PR practitioner Anyiko Owoko recounted her own experience of how when she once sought to have breakfast at the hotel she was informed of a policy that required them to pay up to Sh60,000 ($600) for unnecessary add-ons like an airport transfer, car and chauffeur.

View this post on Instagram

Dear Giraffe Manor Management @thesafaricollection You are cancelled & we don’t need to be welcomed into Giraffe Manor, only now that you need KENYANS because all your white rich guests can’t travel into your establishment because of the Corona. My friend @smilesbeckwith [a travel consultant and owner of a travel company] tried to book a stay with you, last year between Sept and Oct, we called your establishment to inquire if we could stay a night – there was no space available because you were booked out, completely understandable. But when we requested to come have breakfast and just see the giraffes we were slapped with an exorbitant rate [over 600 USD] which included a driver, chauffeur, airport transfer and a vehicle BUT when we requested to pay only for the breakfast and to see giraffes and not have to pay for the car and airport transfer because we are Kenyans and commuting from the city, your bookings department refused and said that we had to pay the full amount because it is your policy. . For the longest time, your policy has been to have these type of pricing that only benefit non-Kenyans and tourists coming from outside Kenya. I wonder why all over sudden you are welcoming Kenyans into your establishment. Is it because you now need us for your business to survive? You would not have invited us had it not been for the fact that your business, just like all others, is suffering because of the Covid restrictions. No thanks, I don’t want to come to your establishment and urge all Kenyans to cancel and boycott your establishment that has made it terribly difficult for Kenyans to access. You obviously have the right to run your property the way you deem fit and even have policies that benefit your business structure, just don’t include Kenyans now only because you need us and you wouldn’t have had it that way earlier. YOUR OWN POST SHOWS THAT YOU WERE NOT OPEN TO ALL KENYANS BEFORE! WHY “NOW OPEN TO KENYANS.” . #BoycottgiraffeManor Instead Go to Nairobi National Park, Maasai Mara and especially Samburu national reserve and all conservancies/parks in Kenya to see Giraffes and you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for it. After all, this is our heritage.

Since the Ministry of Health made wearing of face masks mandatory in public places, there police officers have been demanding bribes from those found without face masks in order to buy their freedom.

BRIBED

Mr Gabriel Kinuthia is one among victims of these rogues officers. He has narrated to Nairobi News how was walking along KoinangeSstreet when plainclothes police officers stopped him and asked him why he wasn’t putting on his face mask properly.

“The three officers, one male and two female, walked with me around town as they asked me to bribe them for me to be released,” Mr Kinuthia said.

Meanwhile, the officers moved from street to street as they made more arrests.

Mr Kinuthia ended up parting with Sh1,000 to buy his freedom.

Daniel Motari has a similar story after he was nabbed along Moi Avenue. He said that the officers just spotted him and quickly arrested him.

“I had my mask on, but it had not covered my nose well. That is how the two uniformed officers arrested me,” he recalls.

Some of these officers are said to be fond of storming shops and arresting owners who don’t have their face masks on.

ARRESTED

Jane Njeri was seated inside her boutique when two plainclothes police officers stormed her premises and arrested her for not wearing a face mask.

Her arrested drew the attention of members of the public who demanded that the male officers get their female colleagues to arrest the woman.

“The officers are only interested in being given money. What they are doing is genuinely not right,” she said.

But speaking to Nairobi News, Nairobi police boss, Mr Philip Ndolo, said that action will be taken against all OCPDs who fail to discipline officers found guilty of demanding officers.

“I will have a word with all the OCPDs to warn their officers against picking bribes. I also want to ask members of the public to follow the law,” he said.

Two weeks ago, the Inspector General of Police, Hilary Mutyambai, ordered officers to arrest members of the public who do not have masks or don’t wear them properly in public.

Arrest for flaunting these rules, attracts a Sh20,000 fine or six months jail term, or both.

Kenya has registered 167 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours bringing the total number of infections to 2,767.

According to Health Cabinet Secretary, Mutahi Kagwe, among the latest cases is an 11-month old baby.

Of the new cases, Nairobi accounted for 54 while Mombasa and Busia recorded 47 and 28 cases respectively.

Most of the cases recorded in Busia are of truck drivers who transport cargo from Mombasa, Kampala, Kigali, and the DR Congo.

“The test for a devolved health system is now. It is a good test. We are seeing a mixed bag of performances. Other counties are doing well (in treating the patients) while others are lagging behind,” Kagwe said.

At the same time, one more patient had died, raising Kenya’s Covid-19 death toll to 84, while 46 patients have been discharged raising the country’s total number of recoveries to 752.
